My NV+ out of hardware warranty - assuming power supply dead - $75 per issue - is it worth it?

Hi,

I have a ReadyNAS NV+ v1 that seems to have a broken power supply ( no light, no spinup, no fan, just dead). This happened right after I replaced the fan (which was making noise) with a new Noctua fan using the ribber attachments to attach the fan grating and the fan to the chassis. The pinouts I used for the new fan are the same as the one I took out.

Unfortunately, my NV+ v1 is out of warranty (bought 2007). CS wants $75 per incident to debug my problem. Before the fan replacement I replaced my old Hitachi 500 GB drives with 4 WD 1 TB RED drives, which are on my hardware list as compatible with the NV+ V1. I had NO problems installing and syncing these 4 drives, although I never turned off the NV+. So I guess I'm saying that this is the 1st time in many months (I have a UPS attached to the NV+) that I've turned ff my NV+ for a extended length of time. In addition to my problems, I'm using X-RAID. But luckily, I have a 1 TB WD MY Passport made for laptops which has a FULL backup of my data (it's in EXT2 format, but my iMac can read it with EXTFS for MAC OSX from Paragon Software). eBay has 2 power supply for my NV+ that have been modified with additional air holes. But in looking at the labels on these PS', it seems that they are 2 different units. Amazon seems to sell these same units via 3rd party sales.

Honestly, I don't know what to do. $75 for ONE warranty call is steep in my opinion. The CS didn't even say if they had the PS in stock. I'm a retired person on disability, so I need to spend my money wisely.

Please help me make the right deision.

Thanks. Michael Ferrari

  • To end my thread -

Replacing the old fan with a Noctua NF-B9 and swapping out the old power supply with a RND4PSU1-10000S has completely fixed my oveheating/dead NV+ .

  • You should reinstall the original fan and see if works again.  I saw one review on the Noctua that said that some of the non-PWM fans were mislabeled as PWM.  I have no experience with ReadyNAS but if it requires a PWM fan and you unintentionally installed a non-PWM, then this could be the issue.

Well, I'm glad I decided to copy off my miscellaneous items from the NV+; it's back in a coma.

The last warning I got was that the max running temp was being exceeded. So I guess that the old fan stopped runnung completely or the PS got too hot and shut down. It shows me that I have a heat problem (the new PS' are supposed to be cooler).

i'm glad that I finally havn answer - the enemy of all computers - heat :manmad:

I can't believe this!!!! I did EVERYTHING - new power cord, different UPS, different power sockets (UPS vs wall), old fan back in, old fan replaced with new fan, trying to power up without any drives - nothing. Every morning and evening I would hit the power button hoping that it would so any signs of life. I had a dead fish NV+

Today, though, it was as if lightning hit the NV+!. After over a week of it sitting there dead, it tuns on and boots fine! In the meantime, while the NV+ was dead, I decided to send back the QNAP replacement NAS and try to fix the NV+. I ordered the replacement power supply from the UK (I'm still waiting for it) and my plan was to replace the PS as a last ditch effort to save my NV+. But it came out of its coma and is fine now (except for the original problem of the failing fan, which is still in the NV+). Nothing anomalous shows in the logs, but RAIDar does not show any status for the fan, no green bubble, no bubble at all. But it'a been cool the past few days, so I would expect the NV+ not to need any additional cooling for now.

Does anyone have an inkling of what may have happed here? Why leaving the NV+ dead for over a week would it suddendly start working again? Any thought except for divine intervention will be thoroughly considered.

      Thanks.

      Mike

Thanks TheEther for your reply. As it is, the 1st thing I did was to put back the original fan, but no go. In addition, the CS at Netgear just referred me to Amazon.com or Fry's to buy a new, non-oem fan. I know my warranty is around 2 years expired, but that didn't stop Infrant from helping me with my slightly-expired ReadyNAS Duo with the cylindrical fan.

I asked CS if I could purchase from them an OEM fan; I can do my own debugging. But that was not an option.

Before these problems, I had made my mind up to get a new ReadyNAS, but with all these happenings, and the oldness of the NV+, I purchased a QNAP TS-451-US 4 bays. I've been with the ReadyNAS line for 10 years, but I know whhen it's time to go.
