NV+ v2: advanced settings and recycle bin missing?
Am I missing something or a lot of settings previously available in Duo v1 frontview are now missing in v2 line? Examples: jumbo frames, journaling options, performance options,...
It's because Netgear decided not allow users to mess around with advanced settings or are they hidden somewhere?
What it seems missing too is the recycle bin that previously as a system folder containing recently deleted files.

No your not missing something. The "Disable Journaling" (not to be confused with "Disable Full Dat Journaling" option) of the v1 is obsolete on the v2 and x86 anyway so it wouldn't be included even if there were a performance options tab.ciarpame wrote:

If you know your way around SSH you can enable some of the missing things.
NetGear automatically choose settings for some things not configurable e.g. enabling disk spin-down. - ciarpameTutorDo you mean that I can enable more settings in the dashboard or that I can directly enable the settings via SSH?
Anyway I just installed SSH addon as described in a (your) another post, any clue about settings worth to enable or a way to re-enable recycle bin? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDo you have a v1 unit as well as the v2 or just the v2?
You can edit /etc/frontview/samba/Shares.conf (e.g. using vi - google for MAN page, also best to backup the conf file first in case you make a mistake and need to change it back)
A possible addition for a share would be e.g.
vfs objects = recycle
recycle:versions = 1
recycle:repository = Recycle Bin
recycle:subdir_mode = 777
recycle:keeptree = 1
recycle:directory_mode = 777
Then restart samba
/etc/init.d/samba restart - ciarpameTutorThank you very much!
Is this not a global setting but it has to be added to each share I want to protect, am I right? Is it possible to control the recycle bin max size?
As regards you question, I'm going to sell the v1 and just keep the v2, disk are already moved. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI'm not sure. You could try adding it to /etc/samba/smb.conf in the global section (would advise against doing this though). Of course any modifications like this are unsupported but should work if done properly.
Take a look at http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/manpages-3/vfs_recycle.8.html
The settings for the recycle bin size are in /etc/frontview/recycle.conf
media!!/c/media!!200!!10
In the above example the recycle bin for media share is limited to 200MB or 10 days. In this example, I think old files will be removed to make way for new ones once the 200MB limit is reached and once a file is older than 10 days it will be removed. The script to clean the recycle bin is run daily.
The handy thing about the v1 is that you can make the setting you want in that and then check it via the command line and add it to the v2. - ciarpameTutor

I saved a full configuration backup before shutting down v1, maybe I can find my previous recycle bin settings somewhere in the zip file. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredShould most likely be in the locations I mentioned above in that zip file. Manually copy across the changes you want.
- lacumaAspirantHi, I have recently bought the NV+ v2 and was disappointed to find no recycle bin function. That will teach me to read the spec more closely. Anyway I have tried editing Shares.conf and restarting Samba and it works great. But if I power cycle the NAS the changes are lost. I tried editing Shares.conf-sav as well but still I lose it.
Suggestions please. - gandalfnetAspirantHey all,
umm yeah I am going from a Buffalo Linkstation quad to a NV+ V2 and REALLY want to have the recycling fuction...
Any Clue why Netgear forgot to add that to thier product? it seems like it should be a default....
How do you save the changes in Shares.conf? if you cannot then do you think I can just run it in scripts each time at boot up? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredPlease update to 5.3.5 (currently in public beta: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=148&t=62728)
This has added the option to enable the CIFS recycle bin feature via the Dashboard. Do note that this feature only works with the CIFS protocol (used in Windows typically i.e. \\ip.address.of.nas or \\hostnameofnas)
