OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!

Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR

Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1

Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.

Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.

Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.

To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131

The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.

I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.

If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible

  • I updated both of my ReadyNAS Pros to 6.4. One seems to be running fine, but the other survived a couple reboots but some services like ReadyCLOUD didn't seem to be connecting. I did a full shut down, powered it back on and now it's just stuck saying "READYNAS" on the OLED display. The drives do not spin up, NIC doesn't seem to connect to router, OS doesn't load, just "READYNAS" on the display. I cannot access the boot menu with the drives in or with them out. I am at a loss.. Any suggestions?

Just upgraded my Pro 6 to 6.4 from 6.2.4 and now the fans shutdown after the system gets up and running. Temps on the inside of the case are in the 70C range which is bad (normal is 30C). My other ReadyNAS 316 is running just fine with 6.4. Unfortunately you CANNOT go backwards from 6.4 to previous releases of ver 6.

This sounds like a power supply issue and update of firmware is coincidental.  The display says "ReadyNAS" when it is just getting 5V power -- it takes no other interaction with the OS for that.

You didn't say which Pro model(s).  But if it's a 6-bay unit, you can use a standard ATX supply externally to verify it is a power issue.  Then see other threads about replcing the supply with the equivalent Seasonic one.

No the PS is just fine. I did some digging and a bunch of people are having problems with the new FW on the legacy units. There is a fix and I just tried it this morning, you have to install the fancontrol program and it modifies the temps that the fan comes on at and increases the speeds. It is now running between 35 and 40C with the fan speed around 1300rpm. Don't know what will happen with the next FW update but for now it is running fine. Now that I know how to do it, I have 2 other Pro 6's to try upgrading from 6.2 to 6.4.

What happens if you power down both units and swap the disks?

Just powered down and swapped disks.  The operational NAS will still boot with the other disks, the non-operational NAS will still not boot : (

The non-operational NAS has a CPU fan that is not working well.  I swapped in the good CPU fan, it spins faster, but the NAS will still not boot.  I still cannot get in to the boot menu.

        What next? :robotfrustrated:

  • I just upgraded a ReadyNAS Pro 6 from 6.2.4 to 6.4.    After reboot,  the admin Page shows the System Status as "Dead" as shown below

    Screen Shot 2015-10-26 at 6.46.36 AM.png

The system seems to be up and running with the exception of the system fan as shown below:

    Screen Shot 2015-10-26 at 6.46.50 AM.png

The fan was working fine with OS 6.2.4 and comes on during reboot, so I dont think it is a hardware problem.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?   Also, I was going to restore back to OS 6.2.4 but I received an error that I couldnt go back to an older version.   Is it no longer possible to go back to older versions of OS 6?

    Thanks!

Installing fancontrol will fix the fan issue, not sure what will happen with future FW updates though.

Thanks Petermac.  Installing fancontrol resolved the problem!

  • Hi All,

I have the Ultra 6 Plus and when I try to upload the PREP4TOR6_0.1-x86.bin as an addon it tells me that the architecture is not supported.

I may have missed a step,  Any thoughts?

Looks like I figured it out. Just had to do a factory reset BEFORE I started to do any of the upgrade steps.  Very weird, but happy to say I am updated and working as expected!

cficik is it any different if you boot with no disks installed?

koolfrank87 the factory default before installing the add-on normally isn't needed. On your system there must have been a problem for the add-on to fail to install.

  • Has anyone else been having issues with their Pro6 on OS 6?

I'm on 6.4.1 and have to constantly reboot the Pro. It will often drop off the network and I won't be able to access frontview via the name or ip address (static ip).

Only running Plex, Transmission 3 (2.82) and SickRage from RNXtras.

I'm so over needing to babysit this this constantly and any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

No real problems except for fan speeds dropping to zero and ReadyCloud stopping working (and of course there are no diags to figure out why it doesn't work and nothing of course from Netgear)

How much RAM do you have in your NAS?

I am also having the same problem with the Readynas dropping off the network.   It seems to occur every 1-2 weeks and requires a power off reset to get it back.   I am running Firmware 6.4.1 and only running the BTSync add-on.

I'm having the same problem as dejhon and DanEarman.  Were you two able to solve it where your NAS was falling off the network on 6.4/6.4.1?

  • Nope, connected via either CAT5e or CAT6 cable to my netgear 24port gigabit rack mount switch which is connected via CAT6 to my netgear R7000.

I would but I appear to be having issues booting into it now! It's not going past boot: I tried doing an OS update but said it could extract, so tried an OS reinstall and now just tried USB recovery... :'(

      dejhon,

I'm guessing you did a factory reset and got the could not extract error as a result?

Just replied to your PM mdgm; once again, you are awesome!

  • As usual I'm late to the party and am only now looking to upgrade my ReadyNAS Pro 6 and ReadyNAS Business from 4.2.28 to 6.x

What the most stable version of 6.x to move to on legacy hardware? I'm guessing 6.2.4 or 6.3.5 rater than anything older or newer.

  • Thanks for this instructions and all the information included. Just upgraded my ReadyNAS Ultra 6 from 4.2.x straight to OS6.4.1 without any issues whatsoever. Previously I just did upgrade the memory from 1GB to 4GB in case there is more demand from OS6.

Overall I was amazed how quick this move to OS6 was acomplished: In less than 20 min I was able to configure and restore data using the OS6 Backup feature. The improvements and additional features that come with OS6 are just great. Now waiting for the volume to complete resyncing in the background, which is estimated with 24h (6x 3TB WD Red Disks). But the great thing is that I'm aready able to use the NAS for data restore, app install, media streaming, TimeMachine backups, configure accounts, all without restart... love it!

  • I've done some experimentation with a 4.x to 6.x upgrade but came across an wierd issue.

Looking at the 6.x bin files here:

    readynas dot com/contributed/mdgm/r4tor6/

    R4toR6 Files
16 objects in this folder, 899.9 MB total.

     R4toR6_latest.bin        60.8 MB    Nov-30-15

I've downloaded a few to test but they all appear to be the same 6.4.1 image despite the different filenames.

They have the same internal header eg:
    R4toR6_6.2.4.bin
    info::name=RAIDiator-x86,version=4.2-6.4.1,time=1448489595,size=63780864,md5sum=c3b5d436a13d2edf7e30ece5219eebb8,arch=x86,descr=ReadyNASOS
    R4toR6_6.3.5.bin
    info::name=RAIDiator-x86,version=4.2-6.4.1,time=1448489595,size=63780864,md5sum=c3b5d436a13d2edf7e30ece5219eebb8,arch=x86,descr=ReadyNASOS

Even the MD5 hashes are the same:
    01813b9cc7fd95500d6083fbab3f9d10 *R4toR6_6.2.4.bin
    01813b9cc7fd95500d6083fbab3f9d10 *R4toR6_6.3.5.bin

    When I tested an upgrade (R4toR6_6.3.5.bin) it installed 6.4.1. . . .

Has something gone wrong with the repostitory or is 6.4.1 the only version to upgrade to now?

I symlinked the older filenames to the 6.4.1 image.

I still have some old R4toR6 upgrade images archived, but generally it's best to go straight to the latest R6 firmware.

Ah, ha. That'll explain it. Looks like 6.4.1 is the version to use then. Wading through the 1200+ posts on this topic and reading about the 'challenges' on the way it wasn't clear all was good with the latest version. Many thanks for your speedy reply and your time spent creating the images and helping the community.
