OSX Lion, delays when opening certain docs on NAS
I haven't seen anybody else discussing this, but it's so noticeable to me I find it hard to believe nobody else has noticed it.
The setup:
Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.8
MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.1.
ReadyNAS Pro Business RAIDiator 4.2.19
With the Snow Leopard Mac, if I double-click on a TextEdit document or a document that Preview can open (jpeg, pdf) that's located on the ReadyNAS, it opens almost instantly.
With the Lion Mac, if I double-click on the same kinds of documents located on the ReadyNAS, there's a delay of between 7 and 15 seconds before the document finally opens. It's annoying because I know how fast accessing the ReadyNAS can be.
After playing with this for a while, I'm reasonably sure this has something to do with Lion's new Versions feature (I don't think it's a ReadyNAS problem/bug). TextEdit and Preview are both Versions-capable apps in Lion. Documents belonging to non-Versions-capable apps (Microsoft Word, for instance), still open almost instantly in Lion for NAS-located documents.
In the case of Lion, I think Lion is creating a new version or trying to access previous versions of the document during the delay between double-clicking and opening.
I tried disabling local snapshots with:
sudo tmutil disablelocal
But that made no difference. I tried disabling Restore/Resume for TextEdit with RestoreMeNot (http://www.restoremenot.info/download/RestoreMeNot.zip) but that didn't make any difference, either (I was pretty sure it wouldn't).
I think it may be possible to disable or hinder Versions
http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/16/t ... s-sort-of/
but it's a fairly radical procedure and I'm not sure it's advisable.
Q: Has anyone else noticed this behavior with Lion?
Q: Is the double-click delay just something we're going to have to live with going forward with Lion and any Versions-capable documents?

- swamp2TutorI am having similar issues. I first noticed it using iTunes, see my post here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=57973
However, I also notice it just browsing a directory fo photos. The previews take for ever to show up as does opening large group of files for a slideshow with preview. IIRC all of this stuff was way faster with my prior MBP using 10.6.8 (not using 10.7.2 with a MBA).
Wow, I sure would like to get this sorted out. It makes using my NAS pretty painful... - sphardy1ApprenticeI don't often work with files directly stored on my NAS so had not noticed this, but I just tried it out - OS X 10.7.2 accessing Ultra-4 running 4.2.19
I can replicate the issue, but there also appears to be a pattern: When opening an image file in a folder that I have not accessed before, there is a pause before the image is visible in Preview as described. However, subsequent images load quickly. Also if the share is unmounted and remounted, the images in those same folders load quickly also.
If I was to guess, I would suggest that the AFP services on the NAS is doing "something" - possibly updating its database - on that first access, possibly caused by the interaction specifically with Lion (which could explain why SL does appear affected)
Would be good to see Netgear investigate this further as I can agree it must be annoying for those working directly with their ReadyNAS data, though it does appear to be a one time issue when accessing data for that first time.
@rcarr6502, @swamp2 - Can you confirm if you see the same? - swamp2TutorThe issue of populating icons for photo files when browsing a NAS directory does behave as you describe, slow the first time them no delay the second time. However, after a reboot or some time later any "caching" is no longer present, I get the delay back. The issue is not just browsing of directories though. The actual file access is also a problem. If you want to see how slow, try simultaneously opening a large multiple section of photos with the Apple Preview application. Then try to manually scroll through the pictures say with the down arrow. This is not just slow but truly painful. The spinning CD pointer is the norm... Again I am 95% sure this was nowhere near as slow with older Mac hardware and one older OS step back ( 10.6.8 )
Due to this slow down and the one I have noted above for iTunes, I would not at all be surprised if this is a 100% Apple issue. My new Macbook Air and new OS (Lion, 10.7.2) seem to have a plethora of problems. Of course there is more dialog and more talented trouble shooters here than say Apple forums
Cheers. - I haven't been able to replicate any behavior that seems like caching.
If I open a folder on the NAS that has a bunch of jpegs in it, and I double-click one, it takes about 6 - 8 seconds before Preview opens it. That's even for a 902KB image. If I close the image, then double-click it in the Finder again, the behavior is exactly the same. Double-clicking on any other jpegs in the same folder produces the same delay.
Same behavior for PDFs or TextEdit text documents. Basically, any NAS-resident document that is opened by a Lion app that is Versions-capable seems to result in a long delay before the document is opened.
By contrast, a Microsoft Office document on the NAS opens instantaneously.
Populating icons in the NAS folder doesn't seem to have any delays that I notice. To test this, I went into my iPhoto Library (which is stored in my media share on the NAS) and browsed various large folders; I didn't really see any delays in showing directory contents or icons. - sphardy1Apprentice

My comment related to actually opening images in preview not just populating the icon view in finderrcarr6502 wrote:

I would agree this appears to be version related. Eg my photo library in Aperture which references image stored on my NAS shows no such slowdown - Well, I'm glad to hear it's not just me and that other people are experiencing this same issue.
Thanks for confirming it, swamp2 and sphardy. - swamp2Tutor

Thanks for clarifying. Based on your impressive post count I would guess you might have some friendly relations with some Netgear ReadyNAS folks. Anything you can do to draw this to the attention and determine if it is perhaps a ReadyNAS issue or an Apple issue would be incredibly appreciated. Cheers. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe way to check would be to reproduce the issue connecting to the ReadyNAS and check using a Time Capsule as well. If the issue affects a TC as well then it's definitely a Mac OS X issue.
- sphardy1ApprenticeWell - I needed to powerdown my Ultra today as I was rearranging some equipment. (Usually it is running 24x7 and has been up for many days, probably weeks as the last time I remember shutting it down was for the 4.2.19 update)
After rebooting I once again tried to replicate this issue with the intent of trying some more things - but I can't. Images are loading in Preview just fine. Takes about a second to see a new image as I randomly jump around my image library.
I'll keep trying and see if the issue comes back, but for the moment I'm not experiencing any delays as I did before. - I'm pretty sure I've rebooted my NAS since, but I'll give it a try soon.
I don't have a Time Capsule to test.
