Problems using SyncToy 2.1

Hello everyone,

I´m almost going crazy with my ReadyNas Duo! Since August I´m trying fix the following problem (with the help of Netgear support), unfortunately without any success!

I had a Windows Vista Home Premium System running, using RAIDar 4.1.5 and RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043]. The ReadyNAS Duo was connected to my 24-port Switch (Linksys SR2024) and I had Twonkey Media 4.4.17 running on it. First I tried to copy some files from my local harddisc to one of the shares (Media) on my NAS, which worked fine until I tried to copy some avi files. I figured out, that it works fine when I switch off Twonkey, so that problem was solved quite quick. But it went really bad -> I tried to use Micrsoft´s Synctoy V2.1 to synchronize my MP3 Collection on the local harddisc with the Share (Media\Music) on the NAS. To make it short -> It never worked. Unfortunatelly the error message was somehow different every time, but the general message was that there were some problems to connect to the NAS. I contacted the Netgear Hotline and they gave me lots of worthless answers (such as a description of what SyncToy is !?) and finally they said that it works fine when they try it on their system and there has to be a problem with my Vista installation. Well, I considered that as a possible reason and for Windows 7 just came out I decided to setup my computer with it. I did a "format C:" and installed Windows 7 Professional. Additionally I resetted the Nas to factory setting. To make sure that Twonkey is not the one to blame I did not install it. And guess what happened when I tried to synchronize the NAS and my MP3 collection with SyncToy this time.... Same shit, different day :-(

Does anybody have the same problems or have any experience on this topic? I´m almost going nuts! Maybe you can also tell me a good alternative for Synctoy, which might work. I tried "Allwaysync", but this did not work either.

Please help me!!!!

Thank you in advance!
Christoph

P.S.: The setup and the used software versions for the NAS were the same with Vista and Windows 7
P.P.S.: I have Kaspersky Internetsecurity 2010 running (2009 Version on the Vista system) - Is this maybe the Problem?

  • Hi there, i have something i think looks like the question mediator123 has:

first of all i want to sync 1 or more directories on a pc, where i put in my checked mp3's, with the netgear readynas duo. i think i can use the whole story as described by dbott67. so far so good. but i also want to have all the data from the NAA copied to a 1TB usb disk, and like first a complete copy and after that to have it synced with eachother. so whatever i put on the NAS, must be copied to the usb disk, and what i remove from the NAS must be removed from the usb disk. i want to connect the usb disk to the NAS, and have it synced every week or so. then i can store the usb on a remote location, but also use it on another pc.

    is that possible??

  • Just wanted to clarify three options involved in pushing an RSYNC backup to an NVX from a PC running DeltaCopy over the internet.

Data security is important - if I understand properly SSH will protect observers from being able to make sense of what you are backing up as a packet grabber on the wire would only see encrypted data, correct? It is therefore important to use SSH when backing sensitive data up over the internet?

Using a username and password - is this important? I understand only a user with the proper credentials would have the ability to read or write data to the share on the NVX however if I limit the hosts allowed access to the public facing IP of the DeltaCopy box wouldn't this also prevent anyone not on that network (using the same public facing IP address) from accessing the share?

So, to protect the data from snooping use SSH, protect the data from everyone but the network you want to have access to it use the 'hosts allowed access', and protect the data from others in that same network use a username and password? Am I missing anything?

As an aside I find DeltaCopy > NVX over RSYNC a great solution for backing up friends and relatives data - at least until they get their own NAS and offsite backup worked out.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bill

    Correct.

If you wish to ensure that sensitive data cannot be captured and read during transmission, you would need to use some sort of encryption, whether it be via SSH or some sort of VPN hardware.

This is the old belt & suspenders method of 'layered' security. The more layers you have in place, the harder it is to defeat. Someone might be able to spoof an IP, or guess a password, or steal an SSH key, but to get all 3 would take a miracle.

Now you need one of them to buy a NAS so that you can maintain an offsite copy of your data. 8)
  • Thanks for the clarification dbott, much appreciated.

I've played the NAS evangelist part well - six out of seven friends have taken my suggestion to heart and bought their own ReadyNAS. Can't back mine up to theirs though as they all went with the DUO and my NVX has more disk in use than theirs has total.. Once I get my 1100 outfitted with enough space I'll find a rack somewhere for it to handle my offsite backups.

Thanks again! If it weren't for this forum I would still be worrying about what I'll do when I lose a disk that has data that matters.
  • Just an after thought I do not know if this is posted anywhere but if you lock down your Windows PC's with the firewall you may have to add the exception port 873 so that the Deltacopy Server works from the PC. I had this working on my friends pc and then when I went to set it up on mine it took me a little time to figure that the port 873 was not being allowed. I feel very sheepish.
  • What are the advantages/disadvantages of having the ReadyNAS pulling the data vs having the PC push the data?

Thanks for replying! I've been trying to figure out the different synchronization options, and it's been a real challenge for me. I've been asking questions in the following thread: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=59582&p=335796#p335796

Ultimately, I am trying to decide on a sync/backup system (e.g. DeltaCopy, GoodSync, SyncBack, SuperDuper!, Retrospect, etc.). The options are overwhelming. I am using a ReadyNAS Pro (just recently got it) with mixed PCs (Win 7 and Mac OS X).

Thanks so much for your time.
  • Hi,

I'm using the configuration detailed here to copy from ReadyNAS to a DeltaCopy Server on a Windows PC. But I've a problem. I've done exactly all dbott67 instructions.
The problem is that when configuring the job on the ReadyNAS, the "test connection" only works ok if I leave blank the "path" information. I write the server name only and the user name passowrd, then I do the "test connection" and works ok. But then I write down the path and it fails the check. I don't know what I'm doing wrong...

    Any help is welcome.
