readyNAS 104 doesn't start properly
Hello community,
I'm french so i'm sorry for my english level.
Topic:
Suddenly my NAS didn't start properly. I pushed on start button and the NAS started but stopped after 2 seconds.
I retried but did the same.
I have tried to change the electrical plug but didn't change the situation.
I have get out the 4 hard drives and the NAS started, booted during 1 min until 100% and writen on the front screen "in safe mode".
I tried again installing the 4 hard drives and the problem appeared again.
Now i don't access to my datas and i dont know if the hard drives are corrupted or if the problem comes from the NAS itself?!
I had the opportunity to get a second identical NAS 104 but i'm afraid to install my hard drives into, starts the Readynas and loose my datas.
If i remember well i'm in raid X.
My last opportunity is to use RS raid retrieve software but it should be an other story!
If anybody has a suggestion please let me know!

That might have been a mistake. How exactly did you do that?

hello StephenB,
thanks for your question.
I did that with the NAS shutted down.
i booted without hard drives and it runned. After I shutted down the NAS. i installed the hard drives and I turned on the NAS and the problem appeared again. I executed this task 2 or 3 times to understand what happenned
One time, without hard drives, i booted and i executed the Netgear software and prepared his installation with my computer... but without hard drives, the installation is not saved! I wanted to know if i was able to exit the safe mode and i think i succeed!
I just try with hard drives again and after turning on the Nas, the message welcome readynas appears and the Nas shuts down again.
thanks for your help

Ok, that was a safe procedure.
There are a couple of possibilities:
- The power adapter might not be delivering enough power
- The chassis might have failed in a way that only shows up with disks
- There might be a disk issue
You could try a risk-buy of a replacement power adapter.

Another path is to test the disks in a Windows PC using vendor tools (Dashboard for Western Digital; Seatools for Seagate)

StephenB can help you determine if the drives or chassis are the issue. It does sound like a power issue, but may be the external brick or internal voltage conversion circuitry (the latter being non-replaceable and non-repairable).
If it comes down to replacement, there is no additional risk installing your drives in another NAS running OS6. All of your configuration data is on the drives, nothing is in flash. It is best if you first insure the new unit is at the same version of the OS, but it's not necessary. But if the problem is on the drives or a hardware failure damaged the volume beyond repair, this won't help.
That said, I recommend against a replacement 104 unless it's really cheap and you just intend to use it to recover your data to a new location. It's the least capable ReadyNAS that can run OS6. Even an older Pro4 or Ultra4 converted to OS6 is faster (though they do lack a USB3 port, if that matters to you).

hello Sandshark,
i will start with StephenB proposals checking power adaptator and disk integrity. if it doesn't run i will install the 4 disks in the new readynas i baught. I want to recover all my photos mainly. If the new one works properly it lets me time to find another backup solution :-) .
thanks for your help.

hello StephenB and Sandshark,
I have tried old power adapter with new chassis and hard drives. I'w really surprised because this combo doesn't work properly but there is a litlle difference! Now, the chassis starts with the message welcome readynas storage but it stops after 5sec and not 2sec with the old chassis.... Why around 5 sec, i don't know.
For your information, i didn't change the hard drives bracket, i suppose there is no link with my problem.
Now it stays one activity: using SATA to USB adapter i have mentionned before with all the disks. I don't know if i have to start with disk 1 or 2 or 3 or 4?!
When the NAS boots, does it star by the disk 1 or another one? Maybe the disk one is dead and it's why the NAS cannot start correctly?!
An idea before i try?
My SATA to USB adapter gets also a power adpater. Maybe using one disk, it will crash as the new one did on the New chassis.....

hello,
I have checked disks 1 by 1 with Sata to USB adapter. All disks starts properly. No electrical issue during the check.
all the disks are OK using seatool from seagate. No error message.
I have also used rs raid retrieve software which is new for me. Below, kind of informations it gives. On the four disks i have this screen. The software find 15244 files for each disks tested. There is one difference i don't understand. On the first disk, image below, you can see 3 disks on matrices RAID but when i analyzed the 3 other disks rs raid retrieve found 4 disks !!
rs raid retrive exploring the disk i don't find my files for example pictures or films etc

Did you run the full test? Or just the rapid one?

There are multiple RAID arrays on the disks. You appear to be looking at the OS partition (a 4 gb volume), and not the data volume.
Data offload with RAID recovery software will require that you connect all the disks to the PC, not just one at a time.
Aslo it will require that you use recovery software that supports the BTRFS file system. The OS partition is EXT, but the data volume is BTRFS.

Other item, do you know why with rs raid retrieve, when i check the first disk, it finds 3 disks on the raid and not 4 disks?
I see in your Seatools screen shots that you have both 3TB and 4TB drives. If there is more than one 4TB, then they will have one more RAID than the 3TB. That's how XRAID does vertical expansion. I've never used that tool or ReclaiME, but from what I've read about ReclaiME, it will show the files on the multi-drive RAID(s) in demo mode once you have enough drives to assemble the RAID(s). I would expect RS to do so as well. But that means you'll need at least 3 drives or drive images available, but all 4 is better in case it needs to use the RAID to recover from any errors on one drive.

glooz1 - this is quite possible. If you have mixed size drives, the 4 TB drives will have 4 partitions, and there will be four RAID groups on them
- OS
- Swap
- 3 TB data RAID group
- 1 TB data RAID group
The 3 TB drives would not have the fourth data RAID group.
Of course this does depend on what the RS software is telling you. Sandshark is thinking that it is NOT telling you how many disks are in the RAID group you selected. Instead he is thinking that it IS telling you how many RAID groups are on the disk you selected.

Hello StephenB and Sandshark,
Congrats!! We have succeed!! I have continued working on an electrical issue and i baught another noname power supply @ 23€ and the neww chassis starts properly. So the issue comes from power supply @ 23€.
Just to the resume, i baught a new chassis with its power adapter. This power adapter was also bad!!
Many thanks for your help and your support!! I think i will buy a new disk to make backup :-) .
I'm trying right now to enter on readynas software but it's quite complicated. I'm in password recovery step.....

Great!

If you get stuck, you can do an OS reinstall from the boot menu. That will reset the admin password back to password.
