ReadyNAS Duo File System Check

Hi all,

I recently went away and decided to power down my Duo. I loaded RAIDar v4.3.4 and logged on to my Duo and powered it down, all went O.K with no errors. When I can home I loaded RAIDar and then powered up my Duo (This was about 15:00 Yesterday) I came back to my PC approx 15 mins later and noticed that RIADar was showing that the Duo status is File System Check, 100%

Checked again today (18 hours later) and RAIDar still reports File System Check 100%, the front on the Duo shows the Power light flashing, approx every 5 seconds the light stops flashing and the Acct light comes on for a brief second and then goes off and the power light continues to flash.

Is the Duo stuck? Is this s serious fault? should I power it off and try to skip the File System Check? The Duo is loeaded with 2 x 1Tb WD drives set up mirrored.

Thanks

What happens if you try to access the files on it?
  • I am unable to connect to the Duo fron RAIDar as the only option I have is rescan and Locate, the setup and browse options are grayed out. I am also unable to connect to the Duo via the IP address, however I can ping the IP address of the Duo

Maybe try pushing the power button briefly to see if it powers down.

    Do you have a backup?
  • The Duo was my backup I do have some of the data on my Ultra but some of the data I had was only on the Duo.

One option is to try support.netgear.com.

If you want to proceed on your own, I suggest trying shutting it down (brief button press first, if that doesn't work you can try a prolonged press which should shut it down after a few seconds).

If you are a PC user, you can then connect disk 1 to a PC and use http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ to pull the data off. Then your data is safe...

Then reinsert the drive, and power up using the boot menu to bypass the file system check. Instructions are on page 15 here: http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/ ... 6Dec11.pdf
  • Thanks for the support. I raised a ticket with Netgear and have got 2 responses back from 2 different people:

    Hardware check:

    1. Connect the NAS directly on the LAN port of the PC.
    2. Set static IP on PC 192.168.168.5.
    3. Launch RAIDar and check if NAS will be detected.
    4. Turn off NAS, remove hard drives. (NOTE: Put an indicator on which bay the HDD is originally inserted for swapping drives will result to data loss)
    5. Launch RAIDar again, and check if NAS will display a "no disk detected" status.
    6. Run a diagnostic on hard drives using the diagnostic tool that comes along with the drive or download the application on the hard drive manufacturers' website.

To answer your query, kindly perform OS re-install.

Please check the link for the steps:

I was wondering performing an OS install on the DUO, will this affect the disks in it? does anyone have any experience of doing this? I will be trying the first 6 suggestions first.

    Thanks

OS reinstall will reinstall the OS on the disk OS partition. :o It will also reset the admin password to the factory default value ("netgear1" for the duo v1), and reset the IP configuration to DHCP.

Other settings and your data should not be affected. However, it is always best to have a backup... While you have the disks connected to a PC for diagnostics, you can try the disk utility I linked earlier.
  • Thanks for all the help I now have the Duo up and running again.

    This is what I did:

    6. connected the disks to another PC and ran the disk internals software as posted by StephenB (a BIG thanks for this)
    7. Transfered all the data I needed off the drives (this took a very long time)
    8. Put the disks back in the Duo and started an OS re-install.
    9. Waited for C to sync and now all is working with 0 data loss.
  • Hi,
i have the same problem with Ready Nas Duo...so, i'm saving data from 1st hard disk with software disk internals but it's locked with long name files...i can skip the files but i want it...what can i do? I can't rename file?

    Thank you

It might be the destination name that is too long. Can you shorten the destination path (say to c:\x).
