ReadyNas Duo from 500gb to 4 tb

Good morning.
I bought a ReadyNAs Duo containing one 500gb disk and, separately, two 2tb disks, WD Caviar Green. After installing the Duo on my network, I inserted one of the bigger disks in the free slot and made the sync process. The second disk was seen and, of course, available space was determined from the smaller disk. Then I replaced the 500gb dsk with the other 2tb. After sync, both disks were seen as 2tb, but free space was still that of the 500gb.
I made a factory reset and, as you can see in this screenshot
http://veneziadoc.net/netgear.jpg
one of the disks became congruent in capacity and free space, while the other shows correct capacity but only 187gb available. How can this be possible in a redundant RAID? Situation remains the same after rebooting with the two option checked.
I did not try to write any of my data in the Duo, yet.
Thank a lot if somebody can help.
Regards
Umberto Sartori

Looking at that screenshot you appear to be running very, very old firmware. Your unit was probably sitting on a shelf somewhere for quite a while unless you bought it second hand.

Please update to RAIDiator 4.1.7 or later, verify update is successful and then do another factory reset. A factory reset on 4.1.7 or later will give you 4k sector alignment, without this your write performance will likely be poor.

Another thing you should note is that your 2TB disks are not on the Hard Disk HCL

There is a WD20EARS on the compatibility list but the notes specify a different version of it.

Do be aware that if you run into issues with these disks NetGear will likely deny support.

    Welcome to the forum!
  • Thank you very much for the prompt help.

I tryed to upgrade first with Raidiator 4.8 Sparc, and it stucks, then with Raidiator arm and update fails.

I was not aware of the HDC list when i purchased, new and sealed, the unit. On the box is declared compatibility with SATA and SATA 2 Disks, not with "some" of them.
Watching now, with a magnifier, i can see that the note 1 printed uppercase white on black in a four px size, is not a dust particle on the black background.
Nor I was advised of this incompatibility by the dealer (a major informatic ipermarket), who sold me three hd to use with that unit (I bought one more as spare).
So, for a dust particle hideing a too small number in Netgear box, I am vasteing hours and hours of my attention.

If netgear refuses support for those disks, shall I go back to the 500 gb and keep the unit that way?
    Thanks again

With just one disk installed try updating to 4.1.8. Then power down, put the other disk in as well and do a factory reset. The ARM (5.3.x) firmware is for a different platform and will not install on the Duo v1.

It's up to you whether or not you risk using these 2TB disks or not. If you backup your data regularly you may find it worth the risk.
  • Update to 4.1.8 with only one disk was successful, but inserting the second disk and resetting did not correct the difference of available space between the disks.
I made that procedure leaving inside the bay the first disk, which was the one with low availability.
So I remade it takeing out the first disk and leaving the second, and after reset I hot inserted the first. After sync the two disks were finally pair.
Thank you so much, mdgm, have a nice day
    Umberto.
P.S. My Ethernet card supports jumbo frames, may I ask you another advice? On the card configuration I must choose between various jumbo modality. 2/3/4/5/6/7 kb MTU, which one is correct?

[quote="UmbertoSartori"P.S. My Ethernet card supports jumbo frames, may I ask you another advice? On the card configuration I must choose between various jumbo modality. 2/3/4/5/6/7 kb MTU, which one is correct?[/quote]There is no one answer to this (which is why the config gives you a choice). Normally what you do is look at the various devices on your network (including your router/switch), and pick the smallest jumbo frame size in the mix. In my case my laptop has the smallest size (4K). The Duo will support up to 9K jumbo frames.

If you want to try it, pick the largest config on the card, and set the jumbo frame size on the NAS. I suggest that you measure drop-and-drag file transfer speeds with jumbo frames on and off. Some people see a big increase in speed, others see no increase (or even a decrease). With my devices it didn't help, so I have left jumbo frames off.

BTW, If you access the NAS over WiFi, check the WiFi path as well. WiFi doesn't use jumbo frames. The NAS should deal with that, though your other network devices might not.
  • I wish to thank very much this Forum and the Users that gave me an effective help to have the Duo up and running with the new configuration. First disk backup made yesterday was successful.

    Merry Christmas
    Umberto
