ReadyNAS Duo not mounting LVM volume?
I'm not exactly sure what's going on, but that's my theory.
SYMPTOMS:
My Duo won't boot with either (or both) of my drives in it. It will boot fine with no drives. (I had two 500GB Seagate drives in Raid 1.)
When I boot with single (or dual) drives, I get a slow flashing blue (power) LED, the drive 1 LED is solid green, and the drive 2 LED blinks slowly, even if no drive is in it. The drive constantly clicks as though it is being accessed. I thought maybe it was doing some kind of disk check and left it on overnight, but it's still unresponsive.
RAIDar shows it going through a file systems check at power up until it gets to 100%, then it just sits there. After the check, I can get to FrontPage briefly and SSH into it, but after a couple of minutes it loses connection and also drops off of RAIDar and drops the SSH connection. I can still ping the drive but it refuses connection.
At this point, I can't even power the drive off and have to unplug it.
I removed one of the drives and connected it via USB on my Ubuntu box and discovered I could access the 2GB ext2 partition, but the links to my shares on the LVM partition were all broken. I connected the drive to my Debian box and was able to mount the LVM partition using fuseext2 and access all the files on all my shares.
DIAGNOSIS?
So, it would appear the drive (presumably both, though I only tried one) is fine, the files are intact, and the ext2 partition is okay. It seems like the NAS is just not mounting the LVM so I can access my shares.
I tried the firmware restore by unplugging, plugging back in, then holding the reset and power buttons for five seconds then releasing both. It didn't change my admin password, which makes me wonder if it worked.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

- PapaBear1ApprenticeFirst - NO ReadyNAS is supposed to boot without at least one drive. Think of the flash memory as a typical OS install disk, the OS that the unit operates from is on the drives. No drives, no operating OS.
Second - In order to trigger the firmware re-install, the unit must be off and you must depress the micro switch behind the small hole on the back with a straighten paper clip while pressing the power button. You must hold the micro switch depressed until the first long (1 sec) flash of the lights at about 5 seconds. Do not hold for much longer. Here is the link to the instruction: http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=5029 - SixString1AspirantI still don't seem to be getting the firmware to re-install. I tried holding only the reset switch and also holding the reset switch and the power button down.
I held them for 8 seconds but never got the single LED flash. The instructions say the factory reset occurs at 30 seconds; does that mean I could try 10-15 seconds safely? And do I hold just the reset or both? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1. Turn NAS off
2. Press and hold reset button
3. Press power button long enough for the NAS to shows signs of life and begin to boot
4. Release reset button after first blink of disk LEDs (after about 5 seconds)
Releasing after about 10-15 seconds would be safe. Even if you released after 30 seconds, you could disconnect the NAS from power within about 10 minutes to abort the factory default.
I would suggest you seek expert assistance from NetGear tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support). - SixString1AspirantOkay, I finally got the firmware to reinstall. The NAS now comes up in Frontview and RAIDar, said it was firmware 4.1.7. That's good.
But Frontview now tells me No Shares Exist. RAIDar went into File Systems Check after the reboot and reporting the firmware number. (It's now at 12%.) I held the reset only for about 8 or 9 seconds; it shouldn't have done a factory reset.
Will my shares reappear after the file systems check, or should I pull the plug, in case it's trying to do a factory reset? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt's not doing a factory reset. If it was doing a factory reset after a minute or so if initiating it you would be prompted to click setup in RAIDar and choose RAID modes. After about 10 minutes it would wipe the disks, install the firmware and initiate a resync.
A filesystem check is a maintenance operation. The "No Shares Exist" indicates there is still a problem. I would suggest you contact tech support for assistance as I suggested above. If possible, please edit the thread title (i.e. subject of first post of the thread) to include your case number. Otherwise simply post your case number. - SixString1AspirantActually, once it finished the file systems check (and a few more minutes passed), RAIDar came up with the firmware number and I can now mount my drives! I just wish I'd done the firmware update properly 3 days ago!
I'm still not convinced there's not a problem with my drives though. I have a replacement already on order.
Thanks for the help, everyone! - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredContact NetGear tech support. They may be able to identify a problem from looking at your logs.
As for checking your disks: power down the NAS, remove the disks (label order), connect them to a SATA port on your PC and test them using vendor tools. Run both short and long tests.
