ReadyNas NV+ 1.0 always has been very slow
Dear ReadyNAS Community,
Ever since I purchased this device (ReadyNas NV+ 1.0) it has been extremely slow.
I updated memory to 1gb
Turned on all the check boxes in the performance tab
Enabled Jumbo frames
Ensured that my network card in my PC and switch support Jumbo frames
Ensured that the network is running 1 gigabit connection
My network tab in ReadyNas says: Online / 1000 Mbit / Full-Duplex
Yet, the system is still running extremely slow. This got me concerned when I was looking for an upgrade, so I decided to go with Synology DS1512+. What a difference! I don't need an IO meter to see that the images are loading much faster from the Synology, my backup times have decreased too.
For example, a full backup used to take just over 5.5 hours on the ReadyNas NV+. With Synology it took about 3.5 hours. So, I am going to setup ReadyNas NV+ as a backup to Synology, however, I would still like to know what, if anything can I do to speed this system?
Here is another example. I am currently running rsync to transfer files over to the Synology box, here are the times I am seeing:
25673567 100% 3.86MB/s 0:00:06 (xfer#10605, to-check=1136/28179)
25094390 100% 4.03MB/s 0:00:05 (xfer#10606, to-check=1135/28179)
27924214 100% 3.76MB/s 0:00:07 (xfer#10607, to-check=1134/28179)
26022772 100% 2.86MB/s 0:00:08 (xfer#10608, to-check=1133/28179)
32477033 100% 3.97MB/s 0:00:07 (xfer#10609, to-check=1132/28179)
30287531 100% 3.85MB/s 0:00:07 (xfer#10610, to-check=1131/28179)
29613346 100% 3.95MB/s 0:00:07 (xfer#10611, to-check=1130/28179)
30531130 100% 4.20MB/s 0:00:06 (xfer#10612, to-check=1129/28179)
33606931 100% 3.70MB/s 0:00:08 (xfer#10613, to-check=1128/28179)
2588612 100% 2.35MB/s 0:00:01 (xfer#10614, to-check=1127/28179)
Also, the WEB interface of the device is DOG slow. It takes about 5 to 15 seconds to switch to a new menu option. Network errors do not appear to be an issue, since I rebooted this morning and have been copying ever since:
Auto-negotiation 0
Bad packets 0
Disconnect 0
False carrier 0
Idle errors 0
Link failures 0
Receive errors 0
Symbol errors 0
VLAN tags 0
TCP Retransmits 97
Unrecovered TCP Retransmits 0
Are there any logs that I can look at? Mind you, I am not even writing, just reading data at this point. The volume is 60% used.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can try to get this box to run a bit faster.
Thanks.

What do you expect? The ReadyNAS NV+ (v1) is pretty much the NV (released February 2006) with a few improvements (unrelated to performance) such as a LCD display.
Newer ReadyNAS models such as the Ultra/Pro are much faster than the NV+.apara wrote:

Looks like you've done all you can to maximise performance. Disable any unnecessary services (e.g. if you don't use AFP, disable it, but leave HTTP/S enabled as that's needed for Frontview).apara wrote:

You can hardly expect to get the speeds of newer hardware with older hardware.apara wrote:

Those are reasonable speeds. Rsync is very CPU intensive and the Sparc CPU in the NV+ (v1) is very slow so getting slow speeds is expected. Also note that with Rsync only the changes to files are copied across so it does appear to be a slower form of backup than what it actually is especially if using it for backups over the internet.apara wrote:

Frontview (web-admin interface) is a low priority process. Due to the slow CPU it'll run slow all the time but it will run particularly slow when the NAS is under heavy use (e.g. running Rsync)apara wrote:

If you did a backup using NFS not Rsync you'd notice speeds that are much faster but if a file is changed using NFS the full file would need to be transferred across not just the changes. - aparaAspirantThanks for your reply. I was looking at this page http://www.readynas.com/?p=310 that shows speeds possible of 30 MB/sec. I am only getting a fraction (small one) of that. I would be happy at 15 - 20 MB/sec. But, I am getting 3 and 4. That's the reason I feel the speed is very slow. Are my expectations unreasonable?
-AP_ - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredAs I mentioned above Rsync is CPU intensive. You're not going to get those speeds using Rsync. You're expectations are unreasonable for the NV+ (v1). Also as Rsync only copies the changes to files across (not the whole file again) Rsync is a lot faster than the MB/sec numbers would suggest.
Try a backup using NFS and report what speeds you get.
Also if you have the "Disable Journaling" option checked under System > Performance you should have the NAS power connected to a UPS with a USB cable connected between the NAS and the UPS as well so that the NAS will shutdown safely in the event of a power failure. - aparaAspirantYou are exactly correct. I was watching the CPU during rsync on ReadyNas and it was pegged at 98%. At that time the best transfer rates I saw were 4.5MB/sec, but for the most part they were hovering around 3MB/sec. Once I switched to NFS and used a cp command, the network traffic is spiking to 40+MB/sec. So, I guess the CPU in ReadyNas is good for serving files, but could be a bit slow for the requirements of rsync.
thanks for your help.
-AP_ - aparaAspirantActually, I think I may have jumped the gun a bit. At the time, I was looking at the network traffic my PC was also running a backup to the Synology drive, so the total traffic coming into the target device was 40+ MB/sec. Now that the backup is done, the NFS alone is only producing a maximum of 18 MB/sec. Which is still FAR less than what I expected.
The CPU does not look that bad now:
Tasks: 63 total, 2 running, 61 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 1.6% us, 59.9% sy, 0.0% ni, 25.0% id, 0.0% wa, 2.6% hi, 10.9% si
Mem: 1010656k total, 1004464k used, 6192k free, 15904k buffers
Swap: 767904k total, 0k used, 767904k free, 948320k cached
So, I am not sure what else could be causing it to run like this.
So, NFS is better for bulk copy, however, I am not sure what else could be causing such slow speeds. Since the Synology device is able to register 40+ MB/sec performance, I think my network can deliver the packets if put to the task. So, the slow down must be with ReadyNas NV+.
-AP_ - aparaAspirantOk, so, I moved the load from the ReadyNas NV+ to the Synology DS1512+ by enabling NFS on the ReadyNas NV+ and mounting the volume from Synology DS1512+. Then, I executed the rsync on the Synology without using the : or :: syntax (just using the file system).
The ReadyNas NV+ is only showing load from nfsd, while Synology is humming along doing the rsync. Now, I am seeing performance speeds up to around 27+ MB/s.
Lesson learned:
The ReadyNas NV+ has a limited CPU which is just good for sending data, but RSYNC kills it. So, it's better to mount the share using NFS and then run rsync on a machine with a faster processor using the file system (no host: or host::), or rsync over NFS.
Still, it does not take much to overwhelm the ReadyNas NV+ CPU, as just doing NFS creates a load of over 1.
Tasks: 59 total, 1 running, 58 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 23.3% us, 37.1% sy, 5.4% ni, 13.5% id, 1.6% wa, 4.5% hi, 14.5% si
Mem: 1010656k total, 1003584k used, 7072k free, 10560k buffers
Swap: 767904k total, 0k used, 767904k free, 963184k cached
-AP_ - aparaAspirantActually, looking at the top for a while, the wait seems to hover around 50%. Which I think means that ReadyNAS is spending a significant time waiting for drives? I am running slower Samsung 204UI drives which are the 5400 eco green drives. Not sure if there is any more I can squeeze out from this box.
Thanks mdgm for all your help!
-AP_ - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFaster drives might make a slight difference but the CPU would still be the bottleneck.
What version of RAIDiator is on the NV+? - aparaAspirantI am running 4.1.9, at the moment.
