ReadyNASNV-How to get CIFS working?

CIF is a service I can't choose to turn off, yet can't get working. The directions are very thin: type in a workgroup name - bingo! Nope, no bingo for me.

I've tried changing my computer's workgroup to the same name. Nope, it just made me reboot and lose a partition's worth of data :(due to other Windows problems). Trying to setup a network drive gives me:

"The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred:

The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help."

I've typed in \\server\share, tried share with and without the ending $, the server by IP and by the name given in the ReadyNAS console, I've tried changing the user for it to log in with and typed in the UID and PWD I entered into the ReadyNAS control console, even tried prefixing the UID with the Workspace name. Same error message above. If I try adding a network place, it says that it appears to be invalid, and nothing shows up withing the Network Neighborhood inside the Workgroup.

On the console's share list I've got Win, FTP/S, and Web for one share all with a RED version of the write icon, all only allow connection from one machine - this one. CIFS says Default: R/W, Hosts allowed: this IP.

I've just got a computer and the RNASNV on this hub, and some random firewall/switches/router between me and the internet. Is other hardware/software required for CIFS? If so, how would I find that out? The manual seems to lack this info.

Even off of RAIDar I tried clicking the Browse button => error "The network location cannot be reached. ..." WHY?? It finds the machine, even opens the admin interface to it, but won't let me browse??

C'mon, how hard does it have to be to use the ReadyNAS NV as a hard drive??

----
On the plus side, FTP works, now, finally. Except it writes everything to the drive with brand new timestamps. That doesn't meet my needs.
----
HTTPS seems to be working, finally. Except it only allows uploading files and not directories. So that doesn't meet my needs either.
----

Solution, please.

Thanks!

What about your "Workstation" and "Server" services? Try to make sure those are enabled.
I guess my OT question is: is it because CIFS is dead that my machine has survived without an infection for quite some time?
CIFS is usually not where your viruses come from. They're usually from opening an unknown file either off the web or in your email inbox.
  • Thanks for some constructive suggestions, Skywalker. I could really use some more considering I haven't had any luck yet.

Workstation and Server are enabled. I've disabled Windows Firewall a few times with no better luck. There are no Norton/Symantec services nor apps installed.

With the firewall off, I've manually started these services in the following order with no additional luck: Network Connections, SSDP Discovery Service, WebClient, UPnP Device Host, HTTP SSL, NT LM Security Support Provider, Portable Media Serial Number Service, QoS RSVP, RPC Locator, Removable Storage.

I tried but was unable to start these: User Privilege Service, and one previous to that (don't remember which), Remote Access Connection Manager.

These services are marked Disabled and the options for start/stop/etc. are all grayed out: Routing and Remote Access, Telnet, Terminal Services,

Just in case, the system is MS XP Pro, Version 2002, SP2.

Anything else would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. Maybe I've got the name wrong then - what are the network-spreading infections called if not viruses?
  • Going the other direction, now I've made every service Manual which was Disabled, and manually turned on all services except:

3 refuse to turn on: Net Logon, Performance Logs and Alerts, NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing, giving the message "The XXX service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do..."

2 sometimes are turned off again after I turn them on: QoS RSVP and Portable Media Serial Number Service.

Others won't start for various reasons:
HIDA gave me this message: "Could not start the Human Interface Device Access service on Local Computer.
Error 12: The specified module could not be found."
UPS says it is configured incorrectly (I don't have anything hooked up for the moment anyways)
TabletService is Disabled - I don't have the tablet connected, but I did change it to Manual just in case.

And I'm leaving Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing on Manual but stopped.

Could it still be the services? The couple that won't turn on seem fairly suspect to me, but what are my options as far as trying to fix them and get them to a point where they'll start again? Could I otherwise be missing something on this system - something have been uninstalled? What are the critical-path modules for the CIFS system, and how can I troubleshoot them?

    Thanks!
  • datakeeper, your problem is a little puzzling. Do you have another PC you can try with?
  • Very puzzling, I concur. Frustrating too. I'm glad it is a Windows problem and not a ReadyNAS problem, but it is also making it much harder to figure out :(

Yes, I can attach from a borrowed work laptop, and have though it only ever got about 6MB/s over it's GB interface, even with the 2 directly connected, even when copying from the internal HD - also tried external USB drives with similar results. Both the laptop and my desktop claim to be the same version and SP of WinXP, though I don't really trust the exactness of the info from Computer>Properties.

    I've compared these settings:
    1. Windows Firewall was turned on, but turned off for the eth0 and also had several exceptions (DNS, DHCP, UPnP, etc.). On my home desktop I've reset everything to be the same - had to add all those exceptions manually - and while the desktop now gives the Windows red-shield-X warning that the firewall is turned off, RAIDar's Browse still doesn't work, ditto mapping a network drive which still says "The network location cannot be reached.", again false as RAIDar and ping both work and I bet the web interface works as well.

    2. I also compared all services between the two machines and came up with these lists;
Desktop missing: QCONSVC, RegSrvc, Spectrum 24 Event Monitor, SymWMI Service (manual/off), Windows User Mode Driver Framework.
Laptop automatic: WebClient, Secondary Logon, Remote Registry, Print Spooler
Laptop additional: Ati, AVG7, IBM, Infrared Monitor, db, VMWare services

Besides the ones missing from the desktop, I reset the rest to match Disabled/Manual/Auto and rebooted to no additional effectiveness. As for the missing ones, I'll see if poking at the internet turns up any downloads.
  • I recently had the same problem: while one machine on my home network couldn't make a CIFS connection to the ReadyNAS, others could. However, the problem machine could ping, use FTP, and make HTTP connections with the ReadyNAS.

I looked at the firewall--even uninstalled it out of desperation--but with no luck.

This happened after a recent electrical storm; the problem machine was working fine before the storm and I had cleanly shut down and unplugged everything while the storm passed. I was thinking maybe some hardware got damaged before or because of the shutdown.

However, the answer turned out to be simpler than that: somehow the problem machine lost the "Client for Microsoft Networks" protocol. The answer was to reinstall the protocol and everything worked like it should.

I figured this might help out future generations trying to puzzle through Windows networking issues.

  • OK, I know it's a 6-year-old post, but on the off-chance that rsteele is still around... THANK YOU! I was having the same problem (in XP Pro SP2) and this solution worked perfectly for me :)
