ReadyNASNV-How to get CIFS working?
CIF is a service I can't choose to turn off, yet can't get working. The directions are very thin: type in a workgroup name - bingo! Nope, no bingo for me.
I've tried changing my computer's workgroup to the same name. Nope, it just made me reboot and lose a partition's worth of data :(due to other Windows problems). Trying to setup a network drive gives me:
"The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occurred:
The network location cannot be reached. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help."
I've typed in \\server\share, tried share with and without the ending $, the server by IP and by the name given in the ReadyNAS console, I've tried changing the user for it to log in with and typed in the UID and PWD I entered into the ReadyNAS control console, even tried prefixing the UID with the Workspace name. Same error message above. If I try adding a network place, it says that it appears to be invalid, and nothing shows up withing the Network Neighborhood inside the Workgroup.
On the console's share list I've got Win, FTP/S, and Web for one share all with a RED version of the write icon, all only allow connection from one machine - this one. CIFS says Default: R/W, Hosts allowed: this IP.
I've just got a computer and the RNASNV on this hub, and some random firewall/switches/router between me and the internet. Is other hardware/software required for CIFS? If so, how would I find that out? The manual seems to lack this info.
Even off of RAIDar I tried clicking the Browse button => error "The network location cannot be reached. ..." WHY?? It finds the machine, even opens the admin interface to it, but won't let me browse??
C'mon, how hard does it have to be to use the ReadyNAS NV as a hard drive??
----
On the plus side, FTP works, now, finally. Except it writes everything to the drive with brand new timestamps. That doesn't meet my needs.
----
HTTPS seems to be working, finally. Except it only allows uploading files and not directories. So that doesn't meet my needs either.
----
Solution, please.
Thanks!

- Jar_Jar_BinksAspirantOnce I hit same problem with CIFS, and finally I found my Norton AntiVirus/AntiSpam block it.
Please check your firewall if you have one. And how about your network setup and Windows PC version?
And please send All Logs to support@infrant.com for review. - datakeeperAspirantYeah, no NAV running, tried turning off the WIN firewall - nothing. Tried following the manual's directions too - just typing the machine name into a Windows explorer box and still nothing. When doing FTP a Win dialog came up about allowing/disallowing for the firewall, but whenever trying to connect to the machine by CIFS I've only gotten a couple error dialogs about not finding the location.
The logs are pretty sparse too, but I sent them just in case as you suggested.
And sending the logs is pretty annoying - the web interface keeps popping up dialog boxes, and you can't switch to different browser tabs to get the forum's URL. :p
Thanks for the hint... - yoh-dahGuideCan you describe your network setup? I see some packet send errors wrt CIFS. Can you try direct-connect to the ReadyNAS? If configured for DHCP, it'll take on IP 192.168.168.168.
- datakeeperAspirantIf you could explain what you mean by 'direct-connect', then yes, I can try that. Trying that IP in the Windows explorer address bar gets me "Cannot find.. try spelling.." message. I used to have a cross-over cable, but it looks like I don't anymore. Can I direct-connect with a USB cable?
Network topology is:
Netgear hub1
- desktop 192.168.15.102
- ReadyNAS NV 192.168.15.101
- sometimes a laptop
hub1 -> Linksys Router/Firewall/VoIP box -> DSL modem
Also have another switch/firewall at the level of hub1, but I'm not trying to access from there... yet. - yoh-dahGuideTo 'direct-connect', simply connect your desktop directly to the ReadyNAS with a network cable (straight or cross-over). I'd like to start at ground-zero and eliminate anything between your PC and the ReadyNAS. We can go from there once we establish that everything's working OK first.
- datakeeperAspirant"Windows cannot find '\\192.168.168.168'. Check the spelling and try again,..."
But RAIDar's Scan and Setup still work. Browse still gives:
\\ 192.168.168.168
The network location cannot be reached. For more information...
I was Googling for some info and one thread said to be sure the Computer Browser service was started. Mine is set to automatic but not started, I tried starting it and it said that it started it and immediately shut it off again, that that can happen when the service is not needed.
It also said to set exclusions for the Windows Firewall, but in Exceptions checking the box by File and Printer Sharing doesn't seem to do anything for me.
If I try mapping the box's name to a network share, it says "The drive could not be mapped because no network was found." FTP still works to the IP.
So it is definitely my WinXP setup - has a broken machine/network finder? - yoh-dahGuideDo you have another PC you can try sharing with?
- Jar_Jar_BinksAspirantWe get your log files. It seems your system CIFS was never got connections.
You can try to use another Windows PC to see if it is OK with NV CIFS. I still think that is related to some blocking software in your PC. - datakeeperAspirantTried it with my laptop - RJ45-RJ45 port (1Gb/s!), and it works flawlessly: admin, from Run..., and setting up a network share. Through the hub (after changing all the settings) it again works flawlessly (wo much testing).
So... how do I recover the CIFS on my primary machine? Are there 1+ services which may be off or missing, or do I need to reinstall WinXP, or is there something more do-able in between those extremes? I guess my OT question is: is it because CIFS is dead that my machine has survived without an infection for quite some time?
Thanks! I can get started now 8) - Jar_Jar_BinksAspirantYou can check settings of the firewall, antivirus, antispam... in your primary PC. I know that is not easy and time costing.
I resole that in my PC by disable the antispam service of Norton.
