Rsync fails - How to Reset Permissions on a USB Drive?
Hi,
ReadyNas 312 Firmware 6.1.9
Rsync fails due to Error = failed: Read-only file system (30) (on USB drive) Silly part is the original backup was using Rsync however when I plug the USB drive back in Rsync fails due to Read only permissions.
How do I reset the File/Folder permissions on a USB drive, The "Reset File Access" area is not available on USB drives as the Settings -> File Access screens are blank.

What filesystem is on the USB drive? - msdLuminaryHi mdgn,,,,,,,,,,,,,,your browsing/supporting late!
Model USB.....does it really matter (I only ask this as I don't want to hear the "Its not on our Compatability list bit). Have being using it for 2 years on my PRO4 without issue, plus the ReadyNAS312 created the backup so it wasn't a problem until now)
File-system = NTFS
Cheers

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes, I browse these forums a lot.
Did you safely unmount the USB disk when disconnecting it?
Personally I would recommend EXT4 over NTFS. - msdLuminaryI always disconnect properly...........
NTFS is a must in thu\is case. Every few weeks, I Rsync my Documentaries held on the NAS to this USB drive as it connects to my Rasp Pi which runs 24/7 whereas my NAS turns off at midnight :-) - msdLuminaryI disonnected the USB drive and connected it to a PC and did a Scandisk to ensure there were no errors. There was one about Free Space reported and it was fixed. I then dismounted it and connected to the Readynas 312. Issue still exists
Question: How do I reset File permissions? As noted on intital post, "The "Reset File Access" area is not available on USB drives as the Settings -> File Access screens are blank." - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere should be no need to reset file permissions for USB drives.
Perhaps you could backup the data on the USB disk and format it again and see if you run into the issue again?
If you still run into the issue then I do think you should possibly consider changing to using EXT4
If you download the logs what is the date in bios_ver.log ? - msdLuminary2TB of Data................are you kidding me, start all over from scratch, I don't think so, especially considering my PRO4 works fine, this is a 312 OS issue!
PLUS: did you read what I wrote about it having to be NTFS? A Rasp Pi cannot read EXT4 (actually perhaps it can but its not what I want in this case for other reasons)!
I hate to say it but your suggestions here are NOT a solution and only a workaround................however you did help me think about a solution:
Solution (that worked for me): You asked me earlier if I disconnected correctly. I did, however this doesn't mean the drive doesn't have any errors.
By connecting the USB drive to a PC and running a Windows ScanDisk, it found and fixed a single error relating to Free Space. I then reconnected it to the NAS and ran the Rsyn Backup again and ............it worked. Excellent
This chat helped, thanks mdgm, you got me thinking and as an IT Support person..............I like solutions over workarounds as it helps next time around :-). - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes solutions over workarounds are better.
Hopefully it works smoothly now, but sometimes if a filesystem gets badly messed up then a format can be the best way to go. - msdLuminaryAgreed, but this was just a "single" error which was fixed by Scandisk within 30 seconds. It's one worthwhile remembering in case anybody else experiences this issue,
The new OS6 operating system must be very unforgiving compared to the x86 OS on PRO4 as the PRO4 can run on the same Rsync Job (Documentaries to USB) to the same USB drive without issue.
Thanks again and hope the new job is going well.
