rsync path limitation?

The first time trying to set up rsync between two NAS on a local network. Should be easy but am running into problems. Want to backup a Pro6 to a NVX. The Pro6 is assigned a static IP address of 192.168.1.101 and the NVX is assigned 192.168.1.102. Both devices have Jumboframes enabled. As a first step I created identical shares on the NVX as on the Pro6 to include "InstallerImages" and "tst". The rsync services is enabled on both devices; I've set the Pro6 shares Rsync access to readonly and the NVX shares Rsync access to read/write.

First attempt was to create a backup job on the NVX. So, for the "Select backup source" on the NVX frontView , I select "Remote: Rsync Server" and put in "192.168.1.101" for the host and select "InstallerImages" for the path. Try the Test connection button. Get error: can't find 192.168.1.101.

Next, for the "Select backup source" on the NVX frontView , try selecting "Remote: Rsync Server" and put in "192.168.1.101" for the host and select "tst" for the path. Try the Test connection button. Get error: can't find 192.168.1.101.

Next I try the Pro6. For the for the "Select backup source" I select a local share from the pick menu. Then, for the "Select backup destination", select "Remote: Rsync Server" and put in "192.168.1.102" for the host and select "InstallerImages" for the path. Try the Test connection button. Get error: can't find 192.168.1.102.

Next, the for the "Select backup source" I again select a local share from the pick menu. for the "Select backup destination", try selecting "Remote: Rsync Server" on the Pro6 and put in "192.168.1.102" for the host and select "tst" for the path. Try the Test connection button. It does say connection established.

Am I able to use rsync to backup shares with long names? What am I doing wrong? After a few hrs of reading posts and studying the Netgear web KB "Using Rsync to Backup from one ReadyNAS to another" .... any help is appreciated.

Your path names should be working.

-what subnet mask are you using on the Pro6 and NVX?

-Maybe also try \\192.168.1.101\tst and \\192.168.1.102\tst from a windows PC to make sure you can get there (that assumes CIFS is enabled for tst).

-you can try entering the pro admin credentials in the nvx backup job (and vice versa)

-Sometimes "test connection" fails but the actual backup does not. So maybe try running it, and see if you get the same result.
  • Thanks... Frustrating problem.

Both the Pro6 and the NVX subnet masks are set to 255.255.255.0 and have the same Default gateway as well.

I don't have a PC (5 macs in the house). The Shares are set with AFP and Rsync services.
AFP service on the NVX is set to 'Default Access' read-only with only only one write-enabled user set (in fact only one user is defined for the entire NVX since it will be used for backups only -- at least if I get this working). Rsync on the NVX is set to 'Default Access' read/write.

I checked, and over APF, I can add and delete files from both 'tst' and 'InstallerImages' in the NVX. Same is true on the pro6.

Not sure what you mean by entering the pro admin credentials in the nvx backup job. If you mean adding "admin" for login in "Select backup source" and putting in my NVX password then I did try that and it had no affect. I originally was going to require a Rsync passwoerd option but I eliminated that since I was having the more basic problem connecting.
  • Tried the backup anyway and it Failed. Funny - the log says to see the log.

What version(s) of RAIDiator are you running on your units?
  • My goal is to run backup jobs from the NVX to backup source files the pro6
However, in troubleshooting I did find something interesting when trying to run a backup job on the Pro6 with destination on the NVX
    For "Select backup source"
I can select any local share from the pick menu.

    For "Select backup destination"
I select "Remote: Rsync Server" and put in "192.168.1.102" for the host

    Here is the interesting thing
If I select "InstallerImages" for the path I get "Error connecting to 192.168.1.102" as before. However,
if I leave the path *empty* and test the connection I get "Successfully connected to 192.168.1.102" !!!!!
(of course, in this case the Apply button is still grayed out since the destination hare is not defined...)

BTW, what happens if multiple backup jobs with different source shares select the same destination share? Assuming I can get this working, can I have just one share and create different folders on the NVX for different source shares?

To get rsync working, you need to enable the rsync service (network, standard file protocols) and you also need to enable it for the shares (via shares/share listing). You've done both steps? Maybe also try setting everyone to read/write access on both the source and the destination shares. use the "advanced options" tab for the share to reset/apply the access changes.

I also suggest trying a different file protocol (perhaps NFS) to see if that gives you different results.
  • Yes, rsync is enabled on both devices. In my FrontView RAIDiator 4.2.24 this is at the bottom of the 'Standard File Protocols' under Services (for you it is under network?).

Yes, it does appear under the share listing (I'd post a screenshot but it doesn't seem to work here.)

I'll try different things under advanced options when I get home later.

Given that it is specific to a particular Path there must be something with the share I'm identifying. I think it is identical but I'll double check all settings. Sure wish the Browse button worked so it could just go to the host and find out what options are available.

I still suggest a test with NFS (enabling it on both shares).
  • OK, thanks for all the help.

It appears to be working now the way I intended. Honestly, I'm not sure exactly what I did to get to this point as I tried many different things related to permissions (NFS access included) and deleted and recreated shares on the NVX.
