Time Machine using OSX Mavericks
Update: Please check you are running new enough firmware first: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=409701#p409701
Hello there,
I have a Macbook Air running OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) backing with Time Machine to my Readynas Ultra (x86). Everything works, no issues. I also have a development laptop running the latest developer build of Mavericks (dp8) and on this machine, I can't get Time Machine to work. The laptop sees the Time Machine shares over AFP and I can browse the entire contents of the Readynas through Finder. When I open the Time Machine application and hit "select disk," it recognizes the ReadyNas Time Machine share and offers it as a backup option. But when I click the share, it says "connecting" and then I get the following error message: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'XYZ.' The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
Any thoughts?
Does anyone out there have a Mavericks machine backing up through Time Machine to an x86 ReadyNas?

- blacAspirantI installed 5.3.10-T3 on my Duo v2 and have a complete Time Machine backup.
I had an issue with my iMac hard disk, so reformatted and reinstalled Mavericks.
When I try to transfer information from the back up, I login and I see the machines I have backed up, but the message "No volumes found in backup" appears under 3 of 4 machines.
There is a pop up message the first time I try:
Some backups cannot be opened.
Make sure that all of your network devices are
connected and turned on. It appears that some
backups are already in use. If you don't see the
backup you need, make sure it is not currently
mounted by another machine and try again.
I have turned off Time Machine on the other computers, but that doesn't help.
I've connected with my MacBook via AFP and see that the sparse images are all there, but don't know how to access the backup from the Time Machine restore.
Any ideas?
Thanks - dsm1212ApprenticeI'm confused by your description. Are trying to restore your Mac from a backup of your time machine? I believe you need to restore the time machine first, but maybe I'm misunderstanding what you are describing. If you are just saying the time machine will no longer connect, then recheck the password settings first. Remember it's not your normal username/pwd, it's the one in the time machine setup. Maybe they got cleared or something.
Steve - gobigdaveAspirantTime Machine does not work anymore for me.
OSX: 10.9.1
ReadyNAS NVX
RAIDiator 4.2.25
1. At first I started to get the verifying error followed by a requirement to do a full backup again.
2. Then backups started to get stuck at 50Mb of 998Mb backup (for hours)
3. I tried to delete the backup but OSX complained that token file was in use.
4. ssh'd into ReadytNAS and deleted everything in /c/.timemachine
5. Rebooted, powered off, and many combinations thereof
Now, I am left with "The backup disk image “/Volumes/ReadyNAS/Family iMac.sparsebundle” could not be created (error (null))." The odd part is that I can go to the share (or ssh), and Family iMac.sparsebundle is there. My /c/.timemachine folder contains:
nas:/c/.timemachine# ls -la
total 32
drwxr-xr-x 8 ReadyNAS root 4096 2013-12-28 13:32 .
drwxrwxrwx 10 root root 4096 2013-12-28 11:41 ..

drwxr-xr-x 2 root nogroup 4096 2013-12-28 13:27 .AppleDesktop
drwxr-xr-x 2 ReadyNAS nogroup 4096 2013-12-28 13:27 .AppleDouble
-rw-r--r-- 1 ReadyNAS root 0 2010-08-11 14:19 .com.apple.timemachine.supported
drwx--S--- 4 ReadyNAS nogroup 4096 2013-12-28 13:30 Family iMac.tmp.sparsebundle

drwxr-xr-x 3 root nogroup 4096 2013-12-28 13:27 Temporary Items
No amount of reboots or restarts seems to make it happy.
Please help. I don't like operating without some form of backup. - gobigdaveAspirantHard to know what the deal is, but I got it to work by renaming my computer (under System Preferences -> Sharing).
Original Name: Family iMac
1st try: FamilyiMac
This failed with the same error.
2nd try: family
The backup is now progressing along. It will be a while to cover the 500+ GB that I have, but I'm a lot farther along than I was.
Perhaps there is some new problem with 10.9.1 and computer names that have spaces and/or mixed case? - dsm1212ApprenticeStrange. All our machines are named like "GracesMac" and they backup ok, but I'm using 4.2.24 on a PRO6 as my time machine at the moment. A happy ending for you at least though :-).
steve - simps100AspirantHaving a problem with OSx Mavericks and a Readynas Duo V2 running RAIDiator 5.3.8
The device is discovered when browsing under Time Machine settings, I'm able to select it and hit connect but then i get the error: "The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again." - I don't even get the username / password prompt.
Have checked for updates for the ReadyNaS and it seems to be up to date- any other ideas? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI don't know where you checked, but 5.3.9 is the current production release (ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/RND2110/)
Though you might want to try the 5.3.10 beta (here: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic ... 48&t=72267) - simps100AspirantAh fantastic thanks for that - Looked on the readynas its self - it checked for updates but didn't find any.
Updated to the beta and its now working, thanks very much for your help :) - BeatCrazyAspirantI hope you guys can help, I'm in a bind.
I'm running 10.9.1 on a new Mac mini. I was getting good TM backups to my ReadyNAS NV running 4.1.10 until earlier today. I plugged in an external HDD to my NV to make a backup, then Time Machine started freaking out. Not sure if that's what the actual cause was. I went ahead and updated to 4.1.13 on the NV, but that still doesn't work. TM setup tries to connect to the ReadyNAS, but then errors out with the standard "There was a problem connecting to the server "nas-01-xx-xx" The server may not exist or is unavailable" error message.
The strange thing is, I can still access all of the AFP shares on my NAS. Just Time Machine can't connect. - BeatCrazyAspirant^^^ I figured it out. I had to change my TM backup location (to a thumbdrive, ha!), then back to my NAS, where I re-entered my username/pw.
