Ultra4 RMA'd Ultra4+(?), shares don't show - case 18533868

Hi, I've had my Ultra 4 replaced with a RMA due to the following:

Unexpected enclosure status detected [NAS]
V3_3 power is out of normal range [expected: 3.30 current: 3.07].

Netgear support was great and paid £20 so I could get it ASAP and then send the old one back after. New one arrived today, put 2 x 2TB discs in - showing as 86% full, but 0GB available on each of the RAID discs. The firmware on the new Ultra 4 (Pioneer one?) is not the latest one - RAIDiator 4.2.15, but when I try to update it, it fails with "Error encountered uploading update image."

Old one:
ReadyNASRNDU4000

New one:
ReadyNAS Ultra Pioneer Edition 4

So my questions are - can I just put my disks back in my old NAS which is faulty but still works, then I'll have to copy them over the network, hoping the old NAS keeps working while file copying, or now that it has been in the new Ultra 4 it will fail completely and I'll be left with no data? I have a backup of *most* of the data but not everything as the backup from the old readyNAS was part-way through when it failed and didn't want to cause corruption..

Do I need to put a blank disc (I have a spare 1TB) and update the firmware in the new ReadyNAS, then remove and then put the old 2 x 2TB in, as that wasn't specified in the instructions in the ReadyNAS wiki ? If it works great :)

Any assistance greatly appreciated, I have a support call logged which I've asked the same questions, but I'm worried I've messed up :(

Thanks again

Dave

What firmware was on the faulty unit?

You can't downgrade from firmware newer than 4.2.15 to 4.2.15 or earlier.

Regardless of the situation it is recommended to use a spare disk (must not be from your array) to update the firmware on a replacement unit to at least as new as what was on the old unit before doing a migration. This should ensure a smooth migration following the FAQ entry you linked to.
  • Thanks mdgm, it was on firmware 4.2.20 - I'll put a spare unused drive into the new one and update the firmware to the latest. Should it then work fine and not matter if its different hardware, just concerned about the difference in hardware as the new one says 'Pioneer' so assume is newer ? Just don't want all my data being blatted ! (technical term LOL)

It should work fine (hopefully) after the firmware update. If not, contact support again and they can continue to help resolve the issue on the replacement chassis.

The Pioneer was the name used for the home versions of the long discontinued NVX and Pro systems to distinguish them from the Business Models. Many people found this confusing so NetGear decided to have separate Ultra and Pro lines with the Ultra the follow on to the Pioneer and the Pro the follow on to the Business Edition. The carry on of the Pioneer name with the Ultra series was a bit confusing. You should see it say Ultra 4 (with no mention of Pioneer) like on your old unit after the firmware update, I think. I remember my Ultra 6 confusingly being called in RAIDar a ReadyNAS Ultra 6 Pioneer Edition but that was back in the beta period on much older firmware than 4.2.15.
  • Cheers, appreciate your speedy responses :)

Put 1 1TB drive in but have had to go into boot menu and do a factory reset, its now formatting the 1TB, hopefully can then do a full update and stick the original drives back in !

Then first order of business - backup :)

Cheers again, will report back later!

Yes, you should be able to. Shouldn't be too long since there's only the one disk installed (no need for a resync to sync drives sector by sector).

Good plan. Might want to have a read of Preventing Catastrophic Data Loss

Time for me to get some sleep.
  • Thanks for all your help mdgm, after a while the 1TB drive worked, took a while to get it working, not sure why it didn't work the first four times, finally the manual update worked and then rebooted and inserted the 2 x 2TB drives, all that lovely data :) Backup now being copied to external USB drive, thanks.
