USB 3TB not accessible - No Filesystem
Hello,
I'm having an issue with USB 3TB Seagate GoFlex drives on ReadyNAS Pro Business. Several months ago, when I first initially connected them they would not recognize the drives, apparenty they are formatted using a spanned MBT format. I reformatted as GPT disk and ReadyNAS Pro recognized and has been performing backups flawlessly since that point. Running Radiator 4.2.17.
Now all of the sudden it is failing again. Shows drive size as 2794GB "No Filesystem" (this is the same symptom shown before formatting to GPT). Any ideas? If I reformat again (not sure that will resolve issue), then I have go thru and recreate all the backup jobs. I have attempted upgrade to Firmware 4.2.19, still same issue.
The drive works fine and I can see all the data, that has been backed up when I disconnect and connect to my Windows 7x64 machine.

- Spamhater007AspirantAnyone else experiencing this issue. I can reformat and re-attach of course under a new name and setup backup jobs again. works for about week, then the POS Readynas doesn't recognize the drives again, repeat step one.
So far my experience with Readynas and Netgear is about coming to an end. Quit using netgear routers and switches simply because they are not reliable. Now it appears they have done the same to Readynas products. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you hook the drive up to your PC and check the drives using SeaTools? I think there's a special version of SeaTools for the USB disks.
- Spamhater007AspirantThe USB drives work fine. I can reconnect them to the PC access the files without issue. Something on the Readynas Pro just goes out of sync and doesn't recogonize the drives. After I reformat them, Readynas recognizes them again, but have to be setup with a different share name as the original is still in use. This works for a few weeks, just random, than stops recognizing the drives.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThat doesn't necessarily mean the drive is fine. Do test it as I suggested. It will help to isolate the cause of the problem. Personally from the symptoms I'd suspect the USB disk is beginning to fail. Running SeaTools can confirm/eliminate this as being the problem. Run both short and long tests.
You can find SeaTools here: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD
Under System > Performance have you enabled Fast USB Writes? If so, have you been safely unmounting the USB disk? - Spamhater007AspirantSEATOOLS report no issue, I can copy to and from the drives just fine. If I reformat, I can connect back to the ReadyNAS as a new backup device it will work just fine for an indefinate period, than fail to recognize the drive. I have done this now 7 times with the same drive. Right now I perform backups to these USB drives via USB connection from my computer because the ReadyNAS is not reliable.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIf you connect the drive to the NAS and can reproduce the issue again then download the logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs), open a tech support case and send them the logs when they request them.
- ReadySECUREApprenticeWhen you get that case opened could you update us with the case number?
- echengAspirantI'm having the exact same problem—it started after the latest firmware update. My Seagate 3TB external USB drive shows "no filesystem" in the ReadyNas volumes area. This is with a ReadyNas Pro Business Edition running firmware
When I tried to download logs to submit a ticket, the NAS stopped responding to HTTP (couldn't get to the admin panel anymore). I couldn't even shut it down properly via the button on the front of the unit and had to then force a shutdown by holding the button down. Now, the unit won't boot (stays on the "BOOTING" indicator). I've tried an OS Reinstall and am waiting for it to come back online (it's showing "BOOTING" after updating firmware).
Everything else on the box has been working just fine since the firmware update, but this is troubling.
Case number is 19067695. - PapaBear1Apprenticeecheng - it is always best to open a new discussion even though your situation might have the same symptoms although the cause is in most cases different. In your case you tagged a problem with an unresponsive NAS onto a discussion about external drives.
When you open your own discussion, when you enter the subject line put the case number at the end so any wandering Jedi can see it. Also in your post give us information about what firmware version you are running (if you recall) and what brand and models of drives you have installed. Also let us know about the status of your backup, is it current and complete. The more information you put in your post, the fewer questions we will have to ask or guess about. - echengAspirantThank you, PapaBear. Will do.
