Vista Wireless Performance Questionnaire
With the amount of Vista issues on the forum, we are putting out a questionnaire here to get more information on the setups to get get a grasp of what is happening. Based on user feedback over the last several months, we've also updated the questionnaire with some possible solutions as well that you can easily try out.
0) Updated to Windows Vista SP1? SP1 contains a number of network changes that improved overall throughput with the ReadyNAS.
1) Tried changing MTU on ReadyNAS and laptop to 1492? Instructions on how to change Vista MTU at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm . A couple users had success keeping the ReadyNAS MTU at 1500 and switching Vista MTU to 1460.
2) What model of Wireless Router and firmware is being used?
3) What Wireless Card model and firmware being used?
4) What connection speed are you seeing for Wireless Adapter (i.e. 54 Mbps)?
5) What's the connection speed between ReadyNAS to Router (10/100/1000 Mbps) -- you can see this in FrontView's Network page.
6) What's the throughput from Windows XP to ReadyNAS and Vista to ReadyNAS? Both Machines at or near same location?
7) Whats the throughput from Windows XP to Vista?
8) Does disabling firewall help? One user reported problem solved by disabling Symantec firewall.
9) Does uninstalling anti-virus help? One user reported problem solved by uninstalling CA anti-virus.
10) Does enabling jumbo frames work? Several folks reported problem solved by enabling jumbo frames, and this also had the effect of speeding up wired transfers.
11) Are you able to try another router? A couple users reported replacing current router/switch solved the problem.

fgauth wrote: For me this is clearly something related to Vista that cause this issue, is there an incompatible multimedia process like UPnP, DLNA, and the ReadyNAS ?
I don't think there's a process that's incompatible, I think it's more related to the way that Vista handles wireless connections. For the vast majority of Vista users (including my dad), changing the MTU on the wireless adapter in Vista corrects the problem:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=21566&p=147724#p147724 - wusycAspirantI bought a RND2000 a week ago. I separately purchased two Seagate 500GB drives (one of those listed on hardware compatibility list). I am running Vista SP2.
I have been experiencing problems with slow performance on Wireless. Things that I have tried:
- using IP address instead of the hostname of the readynas
- change Wireless Adaptor on my laptop MTU to 1492, 1460, 1430
- enable and disable disk spin down in case spin up after spin fown makes things bad
- tried Radiator 4.14, 4.15, 4.16beta T21
- hardwired port speed on router and readynas to 100MB Full Duplex (in case speed autonegotiation is a problem)
This is just about everything discussed on the forum. None of these make any significant inroad.
The best I can achieve is 2-2MB/s reading and writing. That's usually after I reboot the laptop. It then deterioates to 1.8MB/s, to 600-700kB/s and then to something that is totally unusable. That trend of deterioation happens over a period of a few hours or 24 hours depending how much I do on the unit via my laptop.
I understand that this may not be totally a Netgear issue as Vista has its own fair share of issues. However, it seems to me that people have other NAS and it is ok with Vista.
Are we going to get some real resolution from Netgear? I am very worried as 4.16 beta is supposed to have fix to the Wirless performance issue but it is not.
Is it possible for me to get my money back? I am truly unhappy about this. - atz6975GuideAnybody gives some feedback with vista<-->pro/nvx over wireless?
We all know ze jedis couldn't care less for the "old" NV hardware.... :nashammer:
I asked again and again for a real follow-up on this but to no avail...
ZE JEDIS DON'T CARE! - Bubu67AspirantHi there, for those of you (like me) who were hoping that v4.1.6 would be the cure to all evils, here is some bad news for you...
v4.1.6 is not any better for wireless performance...
v4.1.4 still is for me working better (well working, wereas v4.1.6 just isn't).
Here is my setup, in case the moderators are talking to their support collegues.
ReadyNAS Duo, connected to a bthomehub via 100Mbit ethernet cable (cat6)
2 computers connected to the bthomehub via wireless (54mbps), running windows vista sp2 (one home edition and one ultimate).
PS: I can't wait to upgrade to Windows7, but given that in Europe it means re-installing from scratch, I won't do it.
Why I would love to use the ReadyNas for more than the weekly backup?
I copied my pictures and music to the Readynas to be sure my pictures are backed up and also available on both PCs regardless of which one I happen to connect my camera to... (Thanks SyncToys)
But at present Wireless performance is too slow to do a slideshow directly from the ReadyNas in v4.1.4 (family just walks away and asks me to call them back when it's working... ).
With v4.1.6, it's even worse, the explorer windows just goes: "not responding".
Just for reference the pictures are taken from a 10M/pixels camera so can weight up to 8MB.
As a comparison windows file copying in V4.1.4 achieves an ok 2.2 MB/sec.
But with 4.1.6 it doesn't even start...
So, I downgraded and I am back to "normal", ie: I am the proud owner of an expensive backup device, not a media server. - prometheus1Aspiranti really think netgear need to pull there finger out and sort this wireless issue out :D .
the readynas is a great a product but this wireless issue is doing my head in, i have now changed my router in an attemt to resolve, however still as slow over wireless - shanportAspirantI agree, netgear should at least have a SIMPLE process fro us users to follow so we can try as users to resolve the problem rather than constantly trying the numerious solutions listed in so many posts. Netgear, you can't understand the frustration us users have. Please help or at least make a statment saying you arent going to look at the issue. That way we can all sell our NAS's and go for another product and stop wasting time.
As a guess, I have spent at least 30 hours on this issue trying to find a solution.
PLEASE HELP, NETGEAR
Thanks

- shanportAspirantI have just been on the phone with technical support.
Unfortunately, the lovely staff were not able to provide any further assistance than advising I should read and follow FAQ and forums.
Too my mistake, I had missed one of the suggestions in the forum "adjusting throttling"

I have now made this change and it has made no difference. - ChimaeraAspirantHave to agree that netgear arn't making themselves any friends here, i really wish i'd gone with my initial choice and bought the synology diskstation, if there's no improvements soon i'll have no choice but to use the sales of goods act to claim it's a defective product at the point of sale, the box makes no mention of major problems when using vista.
I upgraded to windows 7 RC in the hope that this problem would be solved, however no luck whatsoever, i convinced my wife that it was £150 well spent yet now i have to face questions as to why she can't access photos without windows explorer crashing...
Anyway here's my answers:

Question to NETGEAR - In your labs have you noticed the same issues reported here from your many paying customers? an official response to this problem would be much appreciated.
