VLAN not working on my GS324TP

Hi,

I'm quite new to VLAN so i might have made some really stupid mistakes, however i tried.

Anyway, I have a setup with a Edgerouter-X and a GS324TP Switch, with ER-X being in VLAN aware mode and has all the VLAN settings referenced in the following page

https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/115012700967-EdgeRouter-VLAN-Aware-Switch

DHCP: 192.168.20.0/24 | VLAN-ID : 20

I tested the VLAN with my laptop directly plugged to the port and NIC set to VLAN ID respectively, both VLAN and its DHCP are working.

Laptop DHCP assigned 192.168.20.2

Next, I followed this KB netgear wrote to setup my switch

https://kb.netgear.com/31026/How-to-configure-a-VLAN-on-a-NETGEAR-managed-switch

With router (trunk) port at 26 and target access port at 8

and... it did not work, even after setting both VID and PVID, no IP is assigned, I even tested with the method above and no IP can be assigned, rather it just shows WAN IP.

Did I do something wrong? Some help or guidance would be nice.

Re: VLAN not working on my GS324TP

Complete unclear, except that you have on VLAN 20 on a trunk port on that EdgeRouter.

All we can help is that the trunk port (20) on the switch must be configured to VLAN 20 [T]agged, and no other VLAN membership, neither tagged nor untagged.

The access port (8) again must be configured for VLAN 20 [U]ntagged, PVID 20, and no other VLAN memberships.

How the WAN IP or that subnet makes it's way to these ports or to the switch at all - check the router config, and in case the WAN subnet coms in untagged, double check why this should be required. unless this is an excepted effect because of the WAN subnet and VLAN is required to be travelling the switch, figure out how and why this is the case, and on which port the WAN VLAN should be configured - and ensure the same VLAN does never reach the other ports where its not required.

Have somewhere what provides the Internet access "WAN" modem port linked through the switch, probably using the native VLAN (untagged) it's becoming very obvious why a WAN IP is assigned. Can't be the switch fault.

Re: VLAN not working on my GS324TP

Thanks for the reply 🙂

Here's some photos for your reference

port.PNG

Port 26 is the WAN port, where it goes directly to the Edgerouter

Router is in VLAN-aware mode.

pvid.PNG

The port and PVID config.

rout.PNG

Edgerouter settings

Still cannot get it working...

10 is abolished and is removed, however that raised another question

Since VLAN1 exists, Do i have to include it in the VID as shown above?

And if so, it is impossible to set port 26 without any other VLAN memberships

WAN port is tagged, as always, but public IP still comes when connected to port 8

Do i also have to tag the port 26(WAN) in VLAN1?

Management VLAN set to 20?

Different port plugged than the one configured?

Re: VLAN not working on my GS324TP

There's only one edgerouter and a GS324TP so no other ports are used.

and yes, management VLAN has been set to 20

And that is plugged to the port #8 configured? Not the first time this happens, count me in, too

Re: VLAN not working on my GS324TP

Put up a list which VLAN is serving what purpose.

Curious what for the network (VLAN) serving the WAN/Internet (eth0 on the router in my reading), technically either a direct link to the CPE (cable modem, fiber box, ...), or just to cover specific requirements as a dedicated VLAN, should ever pass the switch? Appears there is some odd config, mixing up the traffic for multiple VLAN somehow, to the VLAN 20. This is the only explanation why a public IP can be assigned to the switch.

Hera again, what does the WAN port on the switch?

There could be one (or just in case multiple if some LAG is required to have enough bandwidth) - the uplink to the router does go to a LAN or in case there are multiple networks (VLANs, either all tagged, or just one untagged and set to the same PVID) and subnets.

I fear this thread is not about the subject "VLAN not working", much more some some unclear design and connections.

This should be a relatively simple setup to my current configuration

by WAN IP detected, I shall clarify that mean that I saw something similar to unable to assign IP by ipconfig...

Re: VLAN not working on my GS324TP

It's a new setup so LAG should not be a concern.

the WAN port is 26

Re: VLAN not working on my GS324TP

Hi @Tommott1231,

Just to confirm, can you check that the management VLAN on the GS324TP is VLAN20 by going to System > Management > IP Configuration?

For your reference, please check page 41 of the user manual here.

Also, please take note of the steps under Change the Management VLAN Manually, and you'll also have to set port 26 as Untagged on VLAN20 of the GS324TP.

Regards,

JeraldM
