XAV101 - problem after firmware update
I have two XAV101's. They were working fine when installed out of the box. But I wanted to set up the network security and I couldn't seem to get that to work with the buttons, so I installed the Configuration Utility from the CD with the product.
When installing, it said there was a newer version and did I want to install that - I said yes. It was version 2.x of the configuration utility (which I can't find on-line - I can only find 1.1 (1.0.0.7). In any case after installing the software advised me that there is a firmware update. So I installed the firmware update on both devices.
After installing the firmware updates, my units will no longer communicate with each other. The XAV101 that is plugged into my router (local unit) shows power light solid green and ethernet light solid green. Powerline light is off.
The remote unit has the power light blinking green. No other lights. I have left these plugged in much longer than 5 minutes to ensure they can link. They can't... So no longer working.
If I plug the remote unit into my router also I can see the configs for each XAV101 but they will not link via Powerline. Firware version in the Configuration Utility is INT6000-MAC-3-3-3348-00-2764-20080808-F-NA-02.
I have since tried installing the configuration utility 1.1 to see if I could flash the firmware to an older version - no firmware availalbe with 1.1. I can't find ANY firmware for the XAV101 on the Netgear site.
What can I do to resolve this? Is this firmware bad? Where do I get a previous firmware?

- andydrewAspirantI should also note that I have done 'reset to factory defaults' on both devices and the network types are public on both.
- andydrewAspirantI opened a case with Netgear Technical Support on this. After several exchanges of information they are asking me to do or for information that I provided to them when I opened the case. They claim that there is only 1 firmware for these devices and that they can't provide me with the firmware that the units shipped with.
I would advice anyone reading this to carefully consider whether you want to upgrade the firmware on these is prompted by the Config utility. Did not work for me on TWO sets of units. Netgear Support can't help.
Getting returned. - aferraraAspirantI and EXACTLY the same problem. Two units now blinking
How can I return these units to netgear, please?
Thanks
Aris - LevinMageAspirantHi, I have a similar problem. I just got a pair of XAV101 powerline adapters and when I plugged them in office room (1) and downstairs (1) they worked fine. I then installed the software from the CD; update and diagnostic utility. I decided to update the firmware, and after doing so, now have the same issue.
Both adapters work fine if I plug them individually (with the ethernet cable connected to the modem) in the office room, which makes me thing that they are both capable of working. However, if I plug any of them into any other outlet, all I get is a blinking green light power light. I have tried resetting to factory default, etc and have not been able to resolve the issue.
If anyone has any ideas, please respond. - I am having the EXACT same problem myself!!!
When I installed the software, it asked if I wanted to upgrade the firmware, which I did. However, I found that the remote XAV101 (the one communicating over powerline) had the firmware update FAIL.
However - it's still reporting that it has the latest firmware, even though it failed, so I have no way to update the firmware again (while connected with a cable). Where can I find a .bin file to try and use the older utility to update the firmware manually???
Man, talk about taking an easy process (old firmware update process) and making it useless! There needs to be a way to force the firmware update, even if the version on the adapter is the latest version!
This sucks! - LevinMageAspirantThank you jtrosky, I forgot to mention one identical point. "However, I found that the remote XAV101 (the one communicating over powerline) had the firmware update FAIL. " However it still works if I make it my main one connected to the router, but the other one doesn't work either as (the one communicating over powerline).
I'm curious if anyone has had a successful firmware update with this product with no problems. - Ok, so we are in the exact same boat. I too can communicate with my XAV101 if I connect it via network cable, but then it doesn't talk to the remote XAV101 units (just like you are experiencing). I have two other XAV101 units with older firmware, which are working fine.
I think the problem was that I tried to do a firmware upgrade to a remote unit (although the latest software doesn't warn you that you should NOT do this - it actually offers to do it automatically!!). All I want to do is to re-flash the unit with the latest firmware again (while attached locally). However, the latest upgrade utility thinks that it's already at the latest version, so it refuses to run the update again! AAAARRRGGHHH!!
I've opened a case with Netgear support, which so far has been completely useless (they sent me a form letter telling me to download the latest firmware, even though there is no firmware available for download)!! AAARRGGGHHH again!
We'll see what they reply with.... - New to the forums. I just recently bought the XAVB101. I was able to update both with the firmware. But after the update my powerline was a red orange color and only giving me 39 on the speed compared to the one plugged into my gigabit wireless N router which was reading 200. I only bought these to get OnDemand from DirectTV instead of buying their crappy ones. I thought this would also take care of my XBox 360 wireless hook-up and give me faster downloads and movies from on demand. Was I wrong it took 20 to 30 minutes to get a show from on demand which is ridiculous. I am returning them and looking into an alternative. I'm sorry this might not have helped but it did work (just subpar) after the update
- I am about to just switch to another brand of powerline device as well. After days of going back and forth with Netgear tech support, they are simply not helping to resolve my problem.
Now they are trying to say that my device may be bad and they need to find out if it is under warranty, etc... The device worked just fine before the firmware upgrade (which failed). All that I want to do is either reload the older firmware or force a reload of the current firmware!!!! Apparently, you can no longer load previous versions of the firmware or force a reload of the current firmware anymore! What BS!! The old software provided this option! If they would just supply the damn firmware .bin files, I think I'd be just fine.
Time to move on to a different brand.... - FYI, after days and days of wrestling with Netgear support (the latest tech told me that these devices do not have firmware), I decided to attack the problem on my own. After about 20 minutes of searching the web, I found this site: http://www.zibri.org/ - let's just say that within 30 minutes, my device was working again.
Basically, I found that these devices use the "Intellon 6300" chipset. The author of the website provides links to download a utility to update the firmware (or downgrade) AND a few different firmware versions for this chipset. So, I downgraded the firmware on my "broken" unit that wasn't working since the failed firmware update, and sure enough it is back to working again! That is ALL I wanted Netgear to do in the first place - provide me a method (and the firmware file) to revert back to an older version of the firmware!
However, until I flash all of devices with this non-netgear firmware, the unit only works as a remote unit. I cannot use it as the "master" unit (which isn't a big deal). I think that I'll end up reloading this "stock" firmware on all of my units so that I don't need to deal with Netgear ever again (then it will work as a master unit again as well).
By the way, you can also get a utility called "Device Manager", with which you can really configure the details of the Intellon chipsets (including changing the MAC addresses, LED configurations etc). VERY interesting stuff. However, be careful with "Device Manager" - you can easily brick you unit with it if you don't know what you are doing!
Anyway, to fix the XAV101's that "broke" because of the failed firmware update, just use Intellon's utility and firmware files. As long as you use the unit as a "remote" unit, that's all you need to do to get it working again!
