Accessing ReadyNAS Duo from elsewhere
I'm effectively new to this so would appreciate some help. I have a ReadyNAS Duo (Sparc). Everything I want to acccess is Shared.
At home, I can access the files. I have set up ReadyNAS Remote BUT I assume that this needs to be running on a PC and I am about to keep the PC only for the 1% of things that I can't do on an iPad, so it will not be switched on most of the time.
So what I need to know is
1. What setting do I have to configure to make the Shared folders available (to me only) on my Work PC - please don't just say 'set up https' or whatever, I need to understand what to set them to.
2. What tools can I use to access the files on the Work PC
Thanks
Pete

If you are thinking that your home PC would need to be on use ReadyNAS remote from work, then that is incorrect. So one option is to simply install readynas remote on your work PCPistolpete wrote: IAt home, I can access the files. Well the short answer is in fact to just set up HTTPS or FTP. There is some more information here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=63452&hilit=+FTP#p355471 and viewtopic.php?f=23&t=58380&hilit=FTP+passivePistolpete wrote: 1. If you pick FTP, then I would suggest FileZilla. For HTTPS, you just use your web browser. And of course you can use ReadyNAS Remote.Pistolpete wrote: 2. What tools can I use to access the files on the Work PC - SlaskyAspirantWell the options are as follows:
1. ReadyNAS Remote (as you said)
2. HTTPS accessing the share(s), and to do this you have to do as follows:
- Forward your https port on your router (you set this in your frontview (standard is 443, and you can set your own specified port). This will also make your NAS administrable from the outside as well, with typing "https://yourofficialIP:yourport/admin" in any browser. And if you only type "https://yourofficialIP:yourport" you get to access your shares. "yourport" is the port you set at frontview and "yourofficialIP" is your official IP address given to your router. This can be found if you access the site http://www.whatsmyip.org/. To change the HTTPS port go to: Services -> Standard File Protocols -> HTTPS
3. Set up FTP access to the share and forward port 21 (or another port if you have altered this in Services -> Standard File Protocols -> FTP)
- To do this, access your shares menu in frontview, and set your desired settings on the FTP option, and try connecting with a client. You will need to access via your official IP address (as explained above). If you use port 21 (which is standard) the program will figure this out on its own. FileZilla is a free FTP client which is nice for this use.
Hope this helps in any way :) If anything is unclear, feel free to ask
EDIT: Stephen beat me to the explanation, maybe his links are a bit clearer about the suggestions than me :) - Pistolpete11AspirantGreat answers from both of you - it is exactly what I was hoping for.
Good suggestion about running ReadyNAS Remote on the Work PC, however that was my main example and there could be other machines so the other suggestions work better for me.
I will try the set up in the next few days and let you know whether it all went swimmingly.
Thanks again
Pete - Pistolpete11AspirantMy update - with more questions!
I decided to try both suggestions - i.e. setup ReadyNAS Remote and set up HTTP. I can't get either to work.
I do have ReadyNAS Remote working fine on my iPhone.
1. ReadyNAS Remote - I have installed the client on my Work PC. If I try to use the user name and password that ID use on my iPhone and it says Incorrect ID or Password. If I try to set up the same as a New User, it says there is a Connection to the Server error. I'm not surprised, as unlike for thet iPhone client, there is no place to put in the name of the Server that I am trying to get to. The Setup instructions suggest that the next step in to 'Connect to ReadyNAS'. Except that it is greyed out for me! I have checked all the forums and instructions and can't see what I am missing.
2. HTTPS - I opened the port on my router. I'm not sure that it is really open (I did a test from my old PC which said it was 'closed' but I have Zone Alarm Free on there so this may impact my results), but I have tried to continue. My main stumbling block is that I enter http://MyIP:Port Number and every time I try and go to that, it removes the Port Number from the URL and replaces it with a /, and then fails to connect. Why would the browswer (I have tried two) be removing the Port number? (This happens on my iPhone too!) Can you suggest how I proceed? - StephenBGuru - Experienced Userhttps://MyIP:Port is what you should be using. You also need to configure "Port" via Frontview, and enable https access for at least one of your shares.
- Pistolpete11AspirantSorry, my typo - I am using https://MyIP:MyPort - but my problem is that the browser seems to drop the port number from my URL.
I have set up HTTPS against the Share and the Port in Frontview. My problem is that I'm not getting near that due to the URL issue.
Also, any thoughts on the ReadyNAS Remote issue?
Thanks
i appreciate your interest in helping
Pete - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserI don't use ReadyNAS remote, so I don't think I can help much there.
On the URL, what browser are you using? Have you tried that URL on your local network? - SlaskyAspirantI don't use ReadyNAS remote either, so can't give you any tips.
On the HTTPS issue tho, which port did you set on the HTTPS settings? Did you set another port than 443? The browser itself will remove the port if its 443 as HTTPS default port is 443.
When you forwarded your port, did you set it to forward it to your NAS local IP?
To check if its done correctly, you can use the tool thats free to download from http://portforward.com/help/portcheck.htm
This tool will inform you if the port is open, to either your device or another one on the network (this only works on TCP ports), or just your computer (on UDP ports)
Let me know if this is of any help :) - Pistolpete11AspirantSome (very) goo news - got into work this morning and decided to try ReadyNAS Remote. It started off failing, and then suddenly kicked into life and works fully for now. Didn't do anything different, but I'm happy.
Thanks for the further tips on HTTPS. I did use Port 443 so that explains why it drops off the number. Good to know.
I will have to recheck my Frontivew set up as I think i may have got something wrong there and I will try this port check too.
