Disk failed - re-synced, disk failed again - do i really need to replace the disk?

Can anyone help me make sense of this.

2 of my disks have been reported failures in the past week. I've ONLY just begun to use Chronosync to now back up my computer files to it. (There are a lot of files, in the 1M+ small files/ development files etc). It is only in this past 2 weeks i've been trying to perform a regular sync from my computer to have a laptop backup.  I've had the nas for some time and its been generally just movie storage. 😉

The issue

Disk 1 fails, i resync, the disk 4 fails, i resync, then disk 1 fails again, resync

-  how can i check if the disk is bad that i need to replace it?

- more so, if it is a bad disk and needs to be replace, what could be causing this type of tag team failure...?

There is a snippet of the log.

ST2000DL003 -9VT166.

These are Seagate "Green" drives.  Seagate Ironwolf (or WDC Red drives) are better choices for NAS use.

I'd replace disk 4 now.

If you don't have a backup of your NAS files, then you should take care of that without delay.

Re: Disk failed - re-synced, disk failed again - do i really need to replace the disk?

Are you using "green" drives?  That is precisely the kind of problem they can create with their self-parking behavior.  But the drives may really be having problems.  A resync is hard on a dirve, so resync for one could cause another to fall over the edge.

The best way to test the drives is with the manufacturer's tools on a PC, either directly connected to a SATA port or using a USB cradle.

ST2000DL003 -9VT166.

I'll purchase a cradle and do a test the next time it fails.. thanks for the advice.
