Transfered 8TB to a backup device (4 and a half days)
Factory default

at the moment 176Gb free on device
What a waste of 9 days of my life for this transfer and the fact that the device should have worked in the first place. then it takes over six months to get a fix!!
I have another 3 of these devices still to update currently in ext3 but I will save that for another time I need the device which I transfered data to for storing data.
You can go from ext3 to ext4 without data loss because it's forward compatible (not backward).

Re: NV+ V2 stalling when 80%+ full (20047616)
What are the commands for this?
I assume I would ssh into the box
I have no linux so if you could post the commands as you did for setting up in ext3. I followed that
Thanks

You must use SSH access and replace ext3 back in /etc/fstab to ext4
then run this from prompt
tune2fs -O extents,uninit_bg,dir_index /dev/c/c
reboot now.
run filesystem check while you rebooting NAS (again)from web frontend.

OK I have updated fstb
entered tune2fs ...
rebooted
entered the fsck... {Enter}
and it has come back with
"WARNING the file system is mounted if you continue you ***WILL*** cause ***SEVERE*** filesystem damage
Proceed y/n"
At this point I stopped to get further advice.

No - my mistake, please check filesystem by Readynas frontend option while rebooting or shutdown.

Re: NV+ V2 stalling when 80%+ full (20047616)
Good job I checked
Reboot with volume check
Volume check completed, 7 hours later (8.1TB)
Downloaded logs from unit looked at mounts.log
gives "/dev/c/c on /c type ext4"
So at long last the unit is in the state it should have been in upon release.
Thanks Jan
1) for the initial solution to format in ext3 which allowed full use and 2)for a time and data storage saving solution for ext4 useage without a factory reset.
now for the other units
By the way if usb drives are attached it will move these up one ie USB_HDD_1 becomes USB_HDD_2 so unplug before you do this
or if your usb name has changed , unplug, ssh into box, edit storage.conf which is in /etc/frontview/usb
remove all settings and save file, plug usb drive back in

Re: NV+ V2 stalling when 80%+ full (20047616)
Hi. I have a quick question which hopefully someone can clarify. In order to fix this 80% full issue, I installed 5.3.8-T20 and rebooted. The dashboard clearly said I was running 5.3.8-T20. I then, as I believe is required, did a factory reset. During the factory reset, the unit said "Downloading FW", then "Updating FW". Now, after the reset the firmware simply says 5.3.8. The T20 has disappeared.
Has the factory reset replaced the T20 version with an older version ? Will this have fixed the 80% issue. A friend of mine was having this problem, updated to T20, factory reset his unit and his dashboard STILL says 5.3.8-T20. Why has mine "downgraded"? (Note, the fix didn't work on his unit until he factory reset the unit. Simply istalling the firmware didn't work).
Do you think if I simply reinstalled the T20 version now (having already reset unit and without any data copied to it), it will still fix thie issue.
I'm so annoyed the T20 has gone. Why !! 😞

Re: NV+ V2 stalling when 80%+ full (20047616)
The factory reset upgraded your system from the 5.3.8-T20 beta release to the newer production firmware 5.3.8. 5.3.8 is the latest firmware for your unit.

Re: NV+ V2 stalling when 80%+ full (20047616)
Thanksk for your reply. I guessed that was the situation after I noticed 5.3.8 was released on 24th May after the date of the T20 beta. I wasn't aware that a factory reset goes and fetched the latest firmware. I would of though it used the firmware on the installed on the unit.
Just another quick question. I initially have 2 x 4TB drives in the unit. Now the sync has completed (using XRaid2), it says I have 2.65TB or 2.70TB free. I'm pretty sure when I bought the unit which was running on 5.3.6 firmware, after initial sync I had the full 2.70TB free. What's happened to the extra 50GB. Windows 7 even shows a small blue bar showing the used space which is why i noticed it. Is this normal? As mentioned, I'm 99% certain i didn't lose 50GB when I originally set up the NAS out the box.
Any comments would be appreciated.
Many thanks

The firmware is auto updated when a factory reset is done only on the Duo/NV+ v2. It is not updated if there is a poor internet connection that drops out more than three times during the download, or if the NAS isn't connected to the internet when the factory default is performed.

Have you put any data on the NAS yet that might account for some/all of that 50GB?

Thanks. Good to know. I just hope Netgear have screwed up when making the final release an my colleague has confirmed the 80% issue was fixed on hin unit once he installed T-20 and did a factory reset. Official release was 5.3.7 at the time so I guess is didn't download latest firmware i his case as the firmware on his unit was newer so his still displays T20.
mdgm wrote: Have you put any data on the NAS yet that might account for some/all of that 50GB?
Nope, haven't copied a thing. Only the usual 2 shares have been set up on the NAS by the factory reset (backup and media), both of which are empty. I appreciate 50GB isn;lt a great deal given I have 2.65TB left, but just wanted to know if it's normal and what is using the space!! I'm guessing it's some XRAID2 overhead of some sorts??

From doing a Google search it sounds like it's the filesystem overhead for EXT4.

i would be concerned why it's only showing 2.65-2.70 TB if you've got 2x 4TB drives in it. it should be closer to 3.7, 2.7TB is what you should see if you had 2x3TB drives as XRaid2 with 2 disks is a mirror. logically 1 disk with 1 disk backup. it sounds like your nas is only seeing the first ~3TB of the drives and the change of firmware could indicate that the total drive size visible isn't quite right.
mdgm wrote: From doing a Google search it sounds like it's the filesystem overhead for EXT4.
even so it was EXT4 on 5.3.6 going to 5.3.8 shouldn't change the overheads of EXT4 i would think. unless netgear are reserving 50GB to help work around the 80% full issue

That is a good point. I agree that it should be closer to 3.7TB with two 4TB drives installed.

Yes, I have wondered if this is some kind of reserve that Netgear have put in place to help solve the 80% issue. I have just checked with my colleague and he also remembers the extra 50GB being "used" so at least it's not just my unit. Maybe having taken the extra 50GB as some reserve the firmware should be reporting the total available space as 2.65TB, but incorrectly shows 2.70TB to windows.
Had I of seen 2.65TB of 2.65TB free, I probably wouldn't of even paid it much attention and would of accepted it. It's not nice seeing a blue bar of "used space" when the disks have just been 'formatted'.
Nothing I can do about it anyway I guess. I just have to accept Netgear wants an extra 50GB of my precious disk space!!. I just hope that this 80% issue has really been fixed otherwise backing up data, factory resetting and restoring data will have been a complete waste of time!!

it was a waste of time for myself, the best resolution i've had to the 80% issue was to get a refund for my unit and get one by another vendor that doesn't have this issue and doesn't consume any space on the storage volume when freshly formatted.
performance has also been better for me with the exact same disks in the other unit, netgear i could get at most 50% utilisation over a gig network card, now im getting 90-95% utilisation of the same gig network card.

Unfortunately, by the time I realised there was a problem, it was too late to send it back 😞
What did you replace it with? To be honest, I've totally lost confidence with Netgear and their quality has gone downhill in recent years. Next NAS I buy probably won't have their badge on it.

depending on your country it may not be to late, here in Australia i had at least 12mo to be able to return it under our laws. currently i've got the HP N54L, i had to install the OS myself but that wasn't hard and the unit was actually cheaper than the netgear unit.
the OS i've chosen to use is: http://openmediavault.org/ it has a simpler GUI to manage the hardware but you have complete control over how things are setup an ran. and it's got plugins/add-ons that allow you to extend the base features even further.

Re: NV+ V2 stalling when 80%+ full (20047616)
Converting to EXT3 helps, does it? And what do you do if you already have all your disks in EXT3???!!!
Netgear have never impressed me on quality nor performance, but the Sw engineering quality control really hits the bottom. Have they ever heard of version control? Have in gods name can an old bug pass through to a subsequent release - albeit a Beta???!!!
This was the final blow for me- getting in to my car to go and by a Synology or Qnap - whatever bet never again Netgear and Readynas!

Re: NV+ V2 stalling when 80%+ full (20047616)
So my issue returned despite all the promises and firmware patches. I now get to 300GBs and then the unit crashes and has to have he power cut and started up again before it can be used. I cant even be bothered to raise it with Netgear again, they have already absorbed more hours of my life than I would care to give to a product that should have worked to begin with. I will never be buying Netgear again. I guess the appeal is their cheap products and the way that that massively undercut the competition. I would be happy to pay more for something that worked.
