Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

I powered down my Pro BE running 4.2.13 and left on a 10 days trip. Came back yesterday to find it running. Had a shouting match with my sons the theme being do not touch my stuff when I am away. Powered down last night and this morning it was running again and I found this thread. This is going to cost me big time when I tell them that I believe them now.

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

I experienced the same problem with 4.2.11 (unable to power up @ scheduled time while the logs DO show the system powered up).

Based on what I've read in this thread I toggled the power up/down option and re-filled the schedules (since somehow they cleared themselves!). Then I powered down the system (not reboot, just powered down), unplugged the system from power, and removed the Ethernet cable for 1 minute. I then brought up the system again, and problem when away...

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

I have the same problem on my pro, weather I power down from the button or from frontview. The systems turns itself back on after 10 minutes. If I also turn of the console switch controlling the pro's electricity and turn it back on it will turn on without me touching the pro's on button itself.

I have the following enabled:
1) disk spin down set to 90 minutes
2) network monitoring of UPS

I have power timer & Wake on Lan Disabled.

It looks like to me that it treats a power down like a power failure and reboots when power is restored.

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

I have fixed the problem but was advised by tech support to RMA the unit in. The tech guy says that when a unit powers on for no reason it is usually indicative of a PSU going bad. At his suggestion he recommends I RMA the unit. I was kind of bummed since the unit was less the 2.5 months old and had to pay for shipping. I think netgear should stand by their product and offer free shipping but that is another story.

Has anyone else heard of this type of PSU problem ?

To fix the problem I had to remove both network cables and the USB connection to my UPS. Waited about 15 minutes and plugged everything back in and the problem went away. Apparently there may be enough current in either the network cables or the USB to trigger the PSU to turn on again.

Note: you have to physically remove the cables turning of the switch and the ups unit is not enough.

Could you try with 4.2.15?

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

The problem is still in there on 4.2.15. When I power down from frontview it seem to work, but when I turn the unit off pressing the power button manually it still turn-on itself after 30 minutes.

Edit: Even when I turn off the unit via frontview the unit turn-on around 2 hours after.

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

I recently open a ticket about my problem (not powering on), and it was found that somehow the synchronization of the clock to the netgear NTP server was the issue. It does not get flagged in the Logs, but the dates in the logs were incorrect. After I switched the ReadyNas to internal clock, problems disappeared...

UltraBike - Thanks. We will take a look with Internal Clock setting and so on.. 🙂

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

Actually, after a few days, even using the ReadyNAS internal clock started to give issues. I opened my ReadyNAS Pro, replaced the CV2032 battery that according to the forums here supplies power to the internal clock when the NAS is off (was a Panasonic, now is an Energizer), and the issue is now GONE even when using the Netgear NTP server and FW 4.2.15.

EDIT:
SPOKE TOO SOON. Today it did not turn on. I guess I will just cruise with the NAS as is, but this certainly reduces my satisfaction with this system. On a system such as this I don't expect flashiness in the interface. I expect speed, durability, and stability, and obviously we are not getting 100%!

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

I have this problem with 4.2.15 as well. Reading through the thread, nobody seems to mention if disconnecting the LAN cables proved that the NAS was being woken by something on the network, or that it was autonomously waking up regardless of the network.

Happy to send logs or to make the NAS available remotely if someone at Netgear needs, if the cause has not been found yet.

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

OK. Today my ReadyNAS PRO turned off by itself outside its supposed schedule. So I checked the NTP Option after I manually started the machine. Well the time according to the NAS was December something midnight!

So I forced NTP synchronization, and to my dismay it did not find the servers! I had in there:
time-e.netgear.com
time-h.netgear.com

Looked around and decided to put
time-a.netgear.com
time.nist.gov

And things are running smoothly again... We will see if this solves the issues...

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

NOPE, Problem persists, EVEN after applying the latest FW RAIDator 4.2.16 + RAIDar 4.3.1...

My ReadyNAS Pro always turns off on time as programmed too, but RANDOMLY TURNS ON, some days it does, and some days it doesn't (so I have to go push the botton). This is a problem if I'm not in the premises and still want to use the scheduled power-on/off feature!

My ReadyNAS Pro is connected to a Trednet Green 8-port Gigabit Ethernet switch, not sure if this could be the problem (don't see how but who knows at this point!). Also I have a replacement unit, not sure if my replacement unit may be defective... NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH MY ORIGINAL PRO UNIT, or my ReadyNAS NV+ which I currently use to back up my PRO. My ReadyNAS NV+ ALWAYS turns off/on as programmed to and is hooked to the same ethernet switch my Pro is.

Last time I call support I was told that for some reason my ReadyNAS PRO time was off for some "strange" reason, so I changed the time servers it was looking at. When that failed I ran the timer internally, and still had problems. I then replaced the internal battery thinking it may have run out of juice, but that did not solve the problem either. The FW update seems to claim it solve some synch issues for the power saving options, but I still have a problem.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

Disable the Schedule Power on/off. Then Power off the unit from front power button and see if it's power on automatically.

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

Hi Jedi Knight,

1) I disabled the Schedule Power on/off
2) Powered off the unit from the front power button.

But unit did not power on automatically (did this twice)

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

Ultrabike,

Thanks for the reply. Now, could you make sure the system clock is set correctly and enable the Schedule Power on/off to make sure it can power off at correct time and power on at correct time?

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

Hi Jedi Knight,

Sure, the system clock is correct for the Schedule Power on/off at this time and will let you know what happened (will send you the logs if it doesn't power back on). Historically, my ReadyNAS PRO faithfully powers off at the correct time, it just randomly powers on at the scheduled time 😞

Re: Uncontrolled power-ups with RN Pro after Raidar Upg.

Hi

Since the firmware update my readynas pro has been powering on by it self. At first when it happened in the middle of the night scaring the hell out of me I thought some one had hacked in and trying to take my data After powering it off the following night the same thing has happened.

I am now forced to use the power switch at the back to prevent the nas from powering up.

To state this has never happened before, I have no scheduled power up or down, no WOL, this started happing after the upgrade to the new firmware,

I got my ReadyNAS PRO replaced (rma-ed), and I'm happy to report that the random scheduled power on failure is gone 🙂

+1 for me too

although when I shutdown the nas and completely turn the power strip off and then turn the strip back on the pro automatically turns itself on. I have tried this with no power strip and just pulling the cord after shutdown and also pressed the power button on the nas while there was no power to it to see if it had any residual power and then plug it in same issue.
