Problem Setting Management Address on M4100
I am struggling here. I have an internal LAN subnet for private use which is established by DHCP server on a firewall/router port. Beyond the firewall are the routers to the WAN.
I thought I could set a static IP for the management address on the M4100
switch on this subnet but when I try I get an error message:-
Error! IP Address/Netmask entered conflicts with the configured IP Address/Netmask of a router interface.
Since the static IP I have tried to use is not in use by any other device, I assume it is the the whole subnet which is causing the conflict. Is that correct?
I assume this means that I must use a management address on a subnet different from any on the firewall. Is that right?

For a wired PC on your network, do CMD >> Ipconfig.
Can you compare the results with what you have inputted. Check subnet mask, and that default gateway is the same as your Router IP.
Plug out switch. Can you ping the IP in question, and see if some other
device responds.?

Hi Marto and many thanks for the reply. I had almost given up on this forum so very glad you have responded.
First I should have stated at the outset I do not use windoze so no Ipconfig command but the subnet checks out all OK using Linux equivalents and there is no address conflict.
What is strange is that on the switch management page the factory default address is still showing but I cannot access the switch using it. However the subnet address I first set is the address which still works and can be pinged, even after doing a factory reset. Very strange.
If you have any further thoughts please let me know. Meanwhile I have connectivity which seems to work OK so shall get on with trying to sort out my site architecture and Vlans.

Can you put connect to the switch on the bench, 1:1, not on network.

There is a paragraph referring to a Unix machine.
Is there any MAC address filtering on your network, that would stop access?
Thanks, Marto - Budgie2AspirantHi Marto,
There is no MAC filtering set up on the lan at present.
The unit is in closet so I shall have to bring it back to workshop in order to use USB port.
Will get round to it asap.
Meanwhile can you think of any reason why I cannot use a fixed address within same subnet as router port?
Seems odd to me but if it is an issue, it means I shall have to set up a "management" subnet, in which case I shall consider putting the management of all my fixed IP devices on it.
Thanks again.

Hi Marto,
Just to report I have solved my initial problems but am losing confidence because the switch does not behave by the book!!!
I was able to connect to it on the bench using USB port and with no network connections either to the switch or the laptop I was using to manage the switch.
The device would not accept the "clear config" command but I could run ezconfig and show network. When I tried to set the desired fixed address using ezconfig I still received the same error message so something must have been retained in a cache which I could not clear.
I then did a hard reset using the front panel button and hoped this would put the machine into DHCP enabled mode. When I plugged into my lan however, it did not obtain a DHCP address or have the the factory default address. Instead I found that the original address which had caused the error messages still worked. This was fortunate as I could then try again with the web control pages.
I enabled the DHCP mode and did a soft factory reset. This has at last worked and the switch has a DHCP address which also shows correctly on the system management page.
No idea what was going on but now will try and set up my VLANs. Thanks again for your help.
