GS728TP: PoE Fault
Hello,
We just purchased a GS728TP PoE Smart Switch.
Unfortunately, when we plug in a new device that requires PoE, the switch has to be rebooted before it will recognise (and provide power to) the new device. It works without issue after this has been done.
I raised a support ticket and Netgear advised me there must be hardware fault on the device. They have suggested that I return it to the supplier.
My original intention was to purchase a GS724TP, but was apparently it is now obsolete and the GS728TP was a direct replacement.
We also have a GS748TP (purchased at the same time), and this works without any PoE issues.
Has anyone else come across a similar problem?
Perhaps I missed something obvious in the configuration. However, I have done a factory reset (and also waited 20 minutes to see if the switch recognises the device without having to reboot).
Many thanks in advance,
Stephen

- Hello,
I'm very happy to find a topic referring exactly the issue i faced.
I also received a replacement switch put problem was still the same (last firmware from the website, etc ...).
After hours of troubleshooting, i found out that it's related to the cascaded switch behind this one.
This GS728TP was connected on a GS724TP, and both are POE switches, i disabled the POE feature on both switches on the ports used to cascade them and no issues anymore.
I don't know if you had same setup but in my case it's now solved ! :)
Regards.

- longwoodAspirantJust as an update, we have received a replacement unit from our supplier. PoE is now working without issue (so far).
So, on the face of it, a hardware fault would appear to have been the cause of the problem.
Regards,
Stephen - longwoodAspirantSadly, we still have a problem.
Today, I plugged a new PoE Telephone into the switch and the switch failed to detect or provide power.
Just to re-confirm, it isn't just the phones that won't draw power. We have other PoE devices (such as a netgear wap) and nothing will draw power until the switch is given a cold boot. Very frustrating. - nopolemic1AspirantWe are also having difficulties with PoE using a GS728TP.
The devices we wish to power are IP cameras. They work instantly, perfectly well when connected to other switches (e.g. GS724TP, GS748TP).
The GS728TP has already been swapped out for a direct replacement.
The PoE supply may work on some ports, but not others. Some may come to life after an hour or so. On one occasion, lucky enough to have a number of ports working, upon power cycling, down to only one port with PoE supplied.
It is a pity the GS724TP was discontinued so quickly - it would have been the product of choice. It is sometimes preferable to let others be pioneers with new products that have questionable reliability.
The cost in time/labour etc. is not tenable.
Can we have a firmware update, product recall, or recommendation from Netgear for a switch that reliable provides PoE, whether Netgear branded, or not. - longwoodAspirantHi,
Sorry to hear you are also having difficulties. I do think it is a firmware issue.
Netgear have opened another case and asked me to submit some debug logs obtained from the switch. However, when I plug in a PoE device, NOTHING happens (and nothing is recorded in the log). I'm not sure how this will be progressed.
I'm certain that a basic test within their lab / workshop would revela the problem.
Kind Regards,
Stephen - nopolemic1AspirantHad a firmware update for the GS728TP - (firmware version 6.0.1.14 ) - Level 3 support recognise there is an issue.
The firmware update does not resolve the matters.
Awaiting further response ... urgently! - longwoodAspirantI have also received the firmware update, but yet to test it out.
I'll post back asap.
Kind Regards,
Stephen - longwoodAspirantI loaded the firmware, but the problem still remains.
- BuxshotAspirantI am having the same exact issues. I purchased 2 new GS728TP's. Configured them and installed them the same way. One is working great, the other stop supplying POE after a couple of days. I rebooted it and everything worked fine. A couple days later it stop supplying POE again. I opened a service request and after a lot of troubleshooting I was told to go back to my supplier and have them send me a new one. I did this, and now the replacement is doing the same thing. Supplys POE for a while after a reboot, but then stops. I am only pulling 50W total with no one device higher than 6.6W. Both switches are at Software Version 6.0.0.64. I am stuck on what to do. Any help out there?
Thanks-
Scot - BuxshotAspirantAnybody try the new firmware release 6.0.1.14 to see if this resolves any issues?
- mjeffrieAspirantThe new firmware release 6.0.1.14 did not resolve our issues. We have wireless access points that indicate they're receiving PoE then will randomly go dead. They're installed in hard to reach areas so this issue is a real pain. Also, the switch indicates via LEDs that it is providing PoE power to all the ports, which is impossible. Sometimes power cylcing the swich will restore power, other times not.
We have no choice but to replace these switches. There are no issues with the GS748TPS switches in our core. Just the GS728TP.
