cannot sign in to openDNS account to set-up parental controls using NETGEAR Genie
Hi,
I am trying to use NETGEAR Genie Parental controls and when I attempt to login to my OpenDNS account, I get the following error message:
"There was an error signing, in please make sure you're connected to the Internet and try again"
I am connected to the internet and I can open my account using the same email and password on the OpenDNS site but Genie will not connect.
I have a D6300 WiFi ADSL Modem Router running firmware version V1.0.0.90
Any ideas? This is getting frustrating, as I have tried several times, at different moments of the day - just in case that helps...
THANK YOU for anyone who may be able to help.
Hi LorneAv,
This has already been reported and is currently being looked at. I will be sending an inquiry to Engineering and will provide an update on this thread.

Thanks, Dexter. Hopefully Netgear engineering team can come up with a solution soon - as you can see from other posts, there seems to be a lot of people having the same problem.

Hi pharesal, ckelly38237, TCasb7793, jhhansen3, snowedin, guddootomar,
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. Engineering is currently working on a fix. In the mean time, you can try using an iOS or MAC OS X device to log in to your OpenDNS account using the NETGEAR Genie for you to setup and manage LPC.

- snowedinInitiateI have the same issue with Genie login to setup Parental Controls. I have a R7000 Netgear router with firmware version V1.0.4.30_1.1.67. The Genie app for Windows v2.4.16 (I have Windows 10 x64 home premium) would not create a new OpenDNS account - did not like my password even though it met the criteria of 6-20 characters (the one I used had 10 chars, containing UPPER, lower, number and one special - the exclamation !. Then I tried one that was 17 chars - Genie still didn't like it). I went to OpenDNS.com and created a new OpenDNS account using my email address and the password I used in this case was 10 chars with Upper, lower, number and special; OpenDNS created an account. Now using Genie with the existing OpenDNS account and password that I know works with the OpenDNS account. Genie app tells me "There was an error signing in, make sure you are connected to the Internet and try again." I am connected to the Internet as that is how I downloaded the Genie app...and how I am replying to this post... I went to OpenDNS and changed my password - 10 chars UPPER, lower, number and special. Verified that I could login with that new password - then back to Genie using the new updated password - Same result "The was an error signing in...I see in this thread a response indicating this is a known issue - when might a work around or fix become available?

Just bought R8500 - same problem: for what I have paid this is unacceptible. I am inclined to return unit unless this can be corrected. This is one of the reasons I purchased it!
- TCasb7793InitiateWe just bought the R7300 which is basically the R7000 but it came with a DST unit. I'm running into the same thing and I am in the same boat as jhhansen3 regarding returning the unit. The parental controls is one of the key features I need for our family and the box indicates that this is a feature of this product. Please help. Thank you!
Same problem. NEEDS a solution (i.e., should work as advertised)
Seems like this has been an issue for quite a while now. Is it LIKELY to get a fix??
Model: Nighthawk R7000
Firmware: V1.0.4.30_1.1.67
- Works...thanks.
- denbo671Aspirant1. There was an error signing in, please make sure you're connected to the Internet.
I am using the correct user name and password and connected to the Internet. I cannot get through.
2. Yes. I can sign into opendns main website.
3. Never worked before.
4. Version 2.4.20 - RVG4AspirantI am having the same problem but seeing the run around other users have been subjected to, I am not very hopeful.
Dexter, this is your opportunity to show that you are not a computer but a real person that gives a $#!+.
Please describe the full circumstances in which parental control or OpenDNS EVER worked through Genie.
Please provide:
1) The device type, name and OS type and version that EVER worked
2) A full password that has ACTUALLY been accepted and known to work (no password rule or suggestion)
3) The router(s) model number(s) and firmware version(s) through wich it EVER worked
Please DO NOT respond with a list of useless canned questions or suggestions. - RVG4Aspirant

Hi @RVG4,
The reason why we ask for these information is for us to perform our own test in our lab. This also helps us isolate the issue and provide the right answer or solution at the soonest possible time. We always appreciate your cooperation since not all solutions apply to all users.

Hello
We have just created an OpenDNS account which we can login to directly without problem, we have created a 15 digit password which meets OpenDNS requirements.
When we attempt to login via Genie, we get the error "There was an error signing in, please make sure you are connected to the internet and try again".
We are connected to the internet and logged into OpenDNS under the associated account.
1. Are you still trying to register an OpenDNS account or do you already have an existing one? HAVE ONE ALREADY - TRIED 2 SEPARATE ACCOUNTS
2. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program/app? YES
3. What version of the NETGEAR Genie program do you have installed on the laptop? 2.4.20
4. Are you getting an error message? If yes, what is it? "There was an error signing in, please make sure you are connected to the internet and try again".
5. What is the model number of your device? DGN1000
6. What is the firmware version? V1.1.0.50
Please advise.
Thanks
John

This is preposterous that there is no solution for this still. I have a R7500 runnin v 1.0.0.94 and Netear Genie installed on Mac w/ El Capitan. Very disappointed with Netgear.
Same issue as everyone on this thread.
Please advise, I have installed, re-installed, but not able to setup parental controls using Genie

Hi @Zabardast,
1. Have you tried using another device (another computer, Android device)?
2. What version of NETGEAR Genie do you have installed?
3. What error message are you getting?

- Retired_MemberPlease see my responses: 1. from my macbook and my ipad 2. Netgear Genie v 2.4.10 3. from NetGear Genie: "Login failed. the router response timed out" BTW Netgear Genie gives same error when I click on Router Settings or ReadyShare. Under Netgear Genie Parental Controls I get the following message: "Checking router firmware We're making sure you have the firmware that supports Live Parental Controls. You don't appear to be connected to the internet. Please connect to the Internet through your NETGEAR router and try again." Let me know how to proceed. Thank you
