N600 C3700 Wifi Speeds Slow

I have an N600 C3700 cable modem/wifi router, and I am having trouble with the speed of my wifi connection. I have Comcast Blast 150Mbps service, and my wired connection typically gets 175-180Mbps (testing with both Speedtest.net and Xfinity's speed test site). However when on wifi I typically am getting 25-30Mbps on the 2.4GHz channel and maybe up to 50Mbps on the 5GHz channel. I’ve tried on two different android phones, two ipads, and a macbook air, and all have those same slow results over wifi. Tested when within about 3 feet of the router, all the way to 20 feet away. I have run the tests dozens of times over the past several days and those results are consistent.

I have checked all the settings on the router and all appear to be per Netgear recommendations. I am using WPA2-PSK [AES] security and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz are set to the “Up to 300 Mbps” mode (I understand I'm not going to get 150 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, but I think I should get it on the 5 GHz). There are no neighboring wifi signals on the channels I am using so it is not an interference issue, nor are there any other possible interference signals in my home that I am aware of. I have tried disabling the encryption and still get the same speed. This morning I did a factory reset and confirmed I’m on the latest firmware (v2.02.06) and I still have the same problem.

Any guidance on how to increase the wifi speed?

  • I am having the exact same problem with my N600. I have tried everything to correct and nothing has worked.  Initially the slow communication speed was only the 2.4 ghz network, but now it has progressed to the 5ghz network.  Chronically dropping down as low 2mbps on either channel.

Hopefully someone responds to help us both.

Yeah, unfortunately I've read a lot of threads with people having the same problem, so I'm not sure if there's a fix. No response yet...

Really disappointed at the lack of response from Netgear to resolve a situation that appears to be rampant throughout the users of this unit.

All the basic BS does nothing and really outside of reset the modem 5x per day to keep the com speed up seems like we are SOL.

  • Are you getting a weak wifi signal too? I'm at 56% signal while I'm in the same room and 30-38% once I leave the room.

my 2,4ghtz will be 300, then dwindle to 50, to 10, to 120 and then typically settles in at slow as S**T around the 50's.

I've had my work IT guys from work try to help, but they said its in the firmware of the unit.

I end having run on the 5ghtz most of time, which has a shorter range and I'm fine with, my family in my house stuck using the 2.4 network as it slows to a crawl.

Resets don't solve, but next day it seems to fix itself and then slow begins to degrade.

I've check all the db settings, signal to noise stuff and all checks out good.

Just sucks that Netgear cares so little - have a Netgear community to lets its users solve their problems instead of providing not support/solutions to its consumers.

  • I have read a lot here and made many changes to the setting for this modem as well as several others that seemed promising.  Nothing helps.

I have even changed the MTU settings.  I am having no luck.  Looking for ANY assistance with this from the community or Netgear.

      Hello Ripleey

What kind of speeds are you getting over wifi?

Mostly around 60mbps.  I sent the router back and got a new one.  When I plugged it in and got it set up, I got ONE reading of 160mbps and then it dropped again.  Seems very very random when the speed is higher than 60, but never above 80.

  • Same issue, I have tried all the options, but the speed is not up.

      Update on the wifi slow.

try these, irrespective of 2.4 or 5,.

      1) try to check the wireless channels available/used near by you. app will show other users who use the wireless channel (use any of the Wifi Analytics App. netgear has this android app)

      2) go to your router admin page

      3) Wireless -> whichever GHz you use either 2.4 or 5, change the channel(do not use Auto) which no one use near by you and save/apply

      try check the speed now.

I tried this and the speed apprx 25-30 mbps which is double than what i got previously. ofcourse the wired speed is not reached as wireless always gives the 50-60% of the actual speed

  • Having the same issues - and Comcast has been zero help. I have the Blast, getting 92mpbs at the modem. Wifi 2.4 ranges from .8 (that's less than 1) to 19mbps. Stupidly slow. The interesting thing is that I was on Wave previously, and had zero issues with reliability. This seems to be all over the map.

I've changed the channels from auto to 11, turned off the 5ghz ssid, connection is STILL at times without any activity.

  • I just purchased this Wifi Router.  I am incredibly dissappointed with Netgear.  I can't obtain any speed higher than 45Mbps, even after attempting all the adjustments listed in these threads.  I still have my rental modem/router from Comcast.  I plugged their's back in to see if this was a connectivity issue, but it's not.  I get close to 90Mbps speeds on the Comcast modem/wifi router.

Netgear/Darren, do you have any suggestions?
