APC UPS + Readynas Ultra + Synology?
Is there anyway to connect these devices together?
I currently have a ReadyNAs Ultra 2 and a synology DS211j. I'm planning to get an APC UPS with usb port. I'm assuming APC has only one usb port but both my servers support USB UPS monitoring.
What does Monitor UPS over SNMP mean on the frontview of the Ultra 2?
Also can I attach the synology to the UPS and the usb of the Ultra 2 to the Synology?
Thanks

Get an APC UPS from the community compatibility list. Connect the USB to the back of the Ultra. You can then configure it to share the UPS. If your Synology supports connecting to a NAS using NUT (Network UPS Tools) over the network then you can configure it to receive shutdown alerts from the Ultra over your network (you will of course still have to connect the power cable for the Synology to the UPS). You will of course have to connect the power cable for your router/switch to the UPS as well. - beefy314AspirantThank you mdgm! The APC UPS available from where I am is only the APC BK650 which is not under the compatibility list.
What are the things/features that I should look at when choosing a UPS? I thought it was as simple as just checking wether it has a USB or not. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredMost APC UPS units that have a USB port (it has to be a USB port, a serial-to-usb cable won't work) will work.
What UPS you get will depend a bit on what load you intend to put on it. You don't want to put more than about 80% of what the UPS can handle or the battery in the UPS will drain too quickly on power failure shortening the battery's life. I believe APC has a runtime calculator that you can use to estimate what load you're putting on the UPS and what runtime you'll get.
Also different UPS's have different features. If you have flakey power then a Smart-UPS is best. If power is very reliable generally then a BackUPS may well be fine. Different models have different features designed for different uses. - beefy314Aspirantthanks again. I'm just buying a UPS for the two NASes and the router. That's all I wish to plug in.

mdgm,
how do I set the ReadyNAs to send shutdown alert to the Synology., if for example it supports connecting to NAS using NUT as you have mentioned?
Can it be done using the frontview? Or do I have to configure it using the terminal(ssh)? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThere's no need to use SSH on the ReadyNAS side. The relevant settings will show under System > Power e.g. when the UPS is connected.
You'd have to ask Synology as to whether they use NUT and support sharing a UPS over a network. If they do then this should work well. - beefy314AspirantThis is what I found on their website.
"Connect an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to your DiskStation to prevent data loss from unexpected power failure. DSM also allows multiple Synology DiskStations in the same network to share one UPS. With only one Synology DiskStation connected to the UPS, other Synology DiskStations within the same network may also be protected under the same configuration."
Is this it? on the web gui of my synology there's an option asking for "Network UPS IP"
Where will the APC get its IP address if the data port connects to the usb of the ReadyNAS?
Thanks mdgm - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThat's the feature you'd want to use. I think that should work, but you'll need to give it a try.
- beefy314AspirantThanks mdgm!
