large USB disk for Sparc and x86 - 4K or 512e?

I need to get two large USB disks for an NV+ and an NVX. Yes, I know the NV+ USB disk cannot exceed 2TB, however it seems many of the modern off the shelf USB disks are using drives with 4Kb sectors. Will 4Kb sector alignment work with the NV+ USB port? RAIDIATOR is 4.1.8.

For the NVX I plan to get a 3TB USB. Same question regarding 4Kb versus 512e disks for the drives connected to USB ports? RAIDIATOR 4.2.21

Anyone have recommendations? I was looking at the Seagate Expansion. I would prefer for user to get an Enterprise disk and good USB enclosure with active cooling. They won't spend the extra $$.

Thanks

  • Does anyone have any insight as to whether I can use 4Kb sector disks with both the NVX and NV+?

I think you should be able to though I haven't tried.

You can easily check if the drive is 4k sector partition aligned via SSH if you are comfortable with using that.

You could also test write speeds to make sure they're similar to what you'd get with a 512 byte sector disk.
  • thanks mdgm

I think it would be helpful if a Jedi chimed in here. It looks like nearly all modern 2TB+ USB disks on the market are 4Kb sector. There's one or two which are 512e and I could go for one of those if its needed for reliability or performance reasons.

Is there an official word from the guys who wrote the code that runs these boxes?

But in the post below, you say you just have to look at the log? What's the diff vs. "via SSH"?

claykin's talking about external disks. Not sure if the info on those is in the logs though it may be.
  • I can say a 1TB Seagate Expansion drive isn't recognized. Pretty generic... yet not compatible? Seriously?

    What version of RAIDiator?

Have to tried both front and rear ports?

Also, I see this is a portable hard drive. It's possible the USB ports in the NAS aren't supplying enough power to the drive. Have you tried plugging the USB drive in via a USB Hub which has its own power supply?

Also one post is enough. You don't need to post the same thing in three threads.
  • I just need one answer, in any of the threads would be fine.

Radiator 4.10, the most recent for the v1 Duo. Yes, tried both front and rear USB ports. Yes, I've tried different cables, powered USB hub and unpowered cables, one USB connection each end and even one of the two ended USB cables, designed precisely so older drives get enough power, with the two-ended side plugged into the Duo. Other external drives work (2.5" laptop USB), this one, seemingly the most common generic Seagate drive, doesn't.
