readynas ultra 4 and wd disks?
hi!
i have finally uppgraded from a readynas duo to a readynas ultra 4, i heavent installed it yet because im waiting for a 2tb harddrive that i ordered, its an usb drive from western digital, inside the enclosure there is a wd disk called WD20EARX, the reason why i bought this usb disk is that the external usb drives are alot cheaper then the internal, so i just thought that i open up the usb drive an take the wd drive out.
I coudnt fint the WD20EARX in the compatiblity list, but it seems to be a quite new drive so perhaps it might not be tested yet?
Is there anyone who knows if this WD20EARX works in my new ultra 4?
im really exited to test my new ultra to see if there are any speed differance between the ultra and my other duo.
thanks

- bbaraniecLuminaryThey are compatible with Duo so I would guess they should work with ultra as well.
You should also check users HCL for more info. As for speed between Duo and Ultra you will not be disappointed :) - lefjompAspirantthank you for a quick reply, i also noticed that the WD20EARX is compatible with the duo, but it was not listed in the ultra list, it might be a old list?
what do you mean by check users HCL ?
later when i have installed the new ultra with the new hd inside, what is the easiest what to do when i need to transfer 1,7 tb from my old duo to the ultra?
thanks

try creating the shares manually on the ultra-4, and then use the frontview backup facility on the ultra to copy the data. You can do this share by share. I suggest running one backup job at a time (frontview will let you run them all in parallel, but personally I think it is better not to do that).lefjomp wrote: later when i have installed the new ultra with the new hd inside, what is the easiest what to do when i need to transfer 1,7 tb from my old duo to the ultra?
NFS is the fastest protocol for copying NAS to NAS, so you might want to enable it on the duo and the ultra first.- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe Duo and Ultra are very different devices with very different hardware including CPUs of different architectures. Do not assume that hardware that works with one will work with another. Due to the increasing variety in ReadyNAS models NetGear chose to split the Hard Disk HCL to have a separate list for each ReadyNAS model. If they didn't do this the ability to qualify drives would have been severely affected. There can be a big difference in what is compatible most noticeably between the Duo (2-bay) and 4200 (12-bay rackmount).
There is a community hardware compatibility list but I would not trust it for something as important as the internal hard drives in the ReadyNAS. NetGear extensively tests disks and whilst it's possible a drive may not be on the list because it hasn't been tested yet or testing is in progress, it is possible that there may be compatibility issues. - lefjompAspirantthank you for your answers.
i guess that ill have to send back the WD20EARX ,but if i try to install this wd disk as number 3, what happens if it dont fit at all, can it ruin my data on the other 2 disks?
isnt there anyone else here that have tried one of these disks? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe disks may/may not work, but if they cause problems NetGear will deny support.
I would want to use supported disks so I could get help if problems emerged. - bbaraniecLuminaryPlease keep in mind that testing all HDD models and configuration is quite a task that's why HCL list might be outdated.
- lefjompAspirantthanks for your answers, i think ill just do it like this,
i plug the usb drive in the duo and copy all the files to it, the i remove 1 disk from the duo and put it in the ultra 4 and the starts to copy allt the files in to the ultra, and when thats done ill add the second drive from the duo to the ultra.
I have a 1tb drive that i can put in the duo and have that one as an extra backup to my photos from my ultra.
is that a good and secure solution? - Of course this is a very late reply...however...
'got 6xWD20EARX in my ULTRA 6, 18 months ago with no issues until recently : regular freezes when streaming (but speed is still very good up to 90MB/s)
The Load cycle count of the WD20EARX is above 750,000 !!!! and have now disabled the timer with 'wdidle3 /d' but the freezes remain. :?
I have thoroughly checked all other components involved (client, switch, cabling, software, firmware) and come to the conclusion that these disks are either incompatible or shot or both
1) I wonder if you finally used the WD20EARX inside the enclosure ?
2) I wonder if your WD20EARX has passed 300,000+ load cycles without issues ?
Tx
