Nas won't connect to internet

Hi All.
My NAS has stopped connecting to the internet and so i can no longer access it from work.
All was fine previously but i have had a BT infinity upgrade (hi speed uk connection) with a new router so it could be a firewall issue. Also i did have a power cut around the same time.
At present in the dashboard /system / settings /readynas, there is a switch which, when turned on, gives a red button with cross saying "internet connection" and green flashing button with "connecting to internet" - which never happens

On my router web page i am able to see an unknow device with my NAS's MAC address...

Help!
Please reply in words of one syllable - thanks

  • What are your readynas network settings?
What is the IP address of the router?
Does the router have MAC filtering on and if so is the mac of the readynas on the list?

You are using readynas remote to access the NAS from work I presume?
  • Hi Thanks - i wasn't expecting so prompt a reply!
It would be really useful to be able to do some screen prints here...

    Network Settings are: -
*General settings - Host name: Nas Ao-77-37, Workgroup: MSHOME
    *DNS Settings - DNS1: 194.74.65.69, DNS2: 217.32.171.21, Domaine Name: (Blank)
*Mac Address e0:46:9a:a0:77:37, Status: up, IPv4 Assignment: "use the following IPv4 address" - with addresses typed in for Ipv4 address (192.168.1.2), subnet mask and default gateway

The ip addess for the router is 192.168.1.254...

The router does seem to have MAC filtering - i think. On its web page , both the port forwarding window and the firewall window each have two drop down lists: the first list is "applications" - which includes lots of computer game titles (presume for online gaming). The second drop down list includes lots of mac addresses. My NAS's MAC address is here and labelled "unknown device"

Does this mean anything to anyone?

Should i change the the IPv4 assignment to "obtain automatically"?

    Thanks

    Angus

If you are reaching your NAS reliably from your home equipment, then your static IP address on the NAS is not the problem.

How do you access the NAS when you are at work? Are you using ReadyNAS Remote, your web browser, or an FTP client???
  • I'm sure StephenB is right, nevertheless,

is the "Default gateway" setting in the nas network settings also 192.168.1.254?

Good catch. A wrong gateway setting could also explain your symptoms. A more common gateway address would be 192.168.1.1.

If you ping 192.168.1.254 from a PC, what is the result?
  • Hi all

fixed this one - ignorantly though - by changing the nas to a dynamic address...

    Can anyone explain?

    should it be static?

Well, as noted above the gateway address in the manual configuration could have been wrong.

Most routers let you reserve the IP address (leaving the NAS set to use DHCP, but always assigning it the same address). That is really the best approach. It ensures the NAS will continue to be accessible when/if you upgrade your router, and still gives you the ability to forward ports to a consistent address in the router. What router model do you have?

Ok. I'm not seeing a full user guide, so I am not sure if it supports address reservation. You might look through the settings, and see if you can find that feature.
  • Problem fixed. ReadyNas update (1.6.5.23) did not work on xp, (but does on Vista and would not install on W8). reinstallation of previous edition resolved problem.
