Can't connect to SSH/Frontview on NV+ after upgrade FW 4.1.8

Hi,

I upgraded my Ready NAS NV+ to firmware version 4.1.8 using this from the SSH command line:

# cd /tmp
# wget http://www.readynas.com/download/RAIDiator/RAIDiator-4.1.8
# echo /tmp/RAIDiator-4.1.8 > /.cf_update_in_progress
# reboot

The decide rebooted, installed the FW and rebooted again.
Now I cannot connect to SSH (connection not established) and not to the web interface Frontview (I tried the cache clearing stuff, that is not the problem, the port 80 seems dead).
However, I can see and use all mapped file shared from my client PCs and the bit-torrent client web-controller on port 8080 seems to work.

  • Is there a way to force an HHS connection to explore the issue?
  • Fill a factory reset preserve my data. I have over a TB.
  • Is this a known issue? Any expert advice?

What version of RAIDiator were you running before?

A firmware update should not result in the loss of the ability to connect via SSH. So it refuses the connection? Did you remember to attempt connecting as 'root'?

Do you have any add-ons installed or stuff you've installed via SSH? If so, what?

Why did you update via SSH? Was Frontview not working before doing the update?

      4.1.7

I did not get that far. It looks like it won't accept SSH connections at all.

I had a bunch of add-on and I do not remember the full list. However, none of them were installed recently and everything was working fine.

I was in the process of installing Java in order to get a CrashPlan backup to work.
( I'd be happy to pay for ReadyNAS Vault if it was somewhat pricier than third party alternatives, but those prices are so ridiculous (10x and more for 500GB+) that I wonder if anyone uses it. But this is off-topic :). )

So I was already on the command line. I think I only got as far as "apt-get update", but I need to check the log when I get home tonight. I hope I remembered to have the SSH client to keep a session log. :)

Is there a way to force the system to accept incoming SSH?

      Thanks!

The NAS should always accept SSH connections after the normal boot process if SSH is enabled. Sounds like your use of SSH has caused the problem.

Depending on what you did NetGear support may be able to undo the damage but a fee would be involved.

What exactly did you install via apt-get? Did you just try to install Java? Did you install libc6 (this will break Frontview)?

When you say you did an apt-get update did you also do an apt-get upgrade? An apt-get upgrade can cause all kinds of problems

It's possible an OS Re-install (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu) may help, but then again in this case it may only make things worse. It will leave data intact though.
    • I looked at the session log and it appears I have done an apt-get upgrade. I intended an apt-get update and obviously screwed a few things up.
I'd be happy to try and fix the system if I could only get an SSH prompt. What will happen with my data if I do an OS reinstall?

Data will be left intact when you do an OS re-install. It may fix the problem with not being able to get SSH access.

Would recommend you have a backup of important data just in case before doing this.
    • It seems the main configuration file is corrupt.
Please reboot the unit to "tech support" mode,
and contact netgear support engineer and add the case # in the subject.
    • I did a "Reinstall OS" / "Reinstall Firmware" and this seems to have rescued everything :D.
I had to reset the admin and the root passwords separately but other than that, everything was intact.
I was pleased to see that the firmware that got "reinstalled" was the 4.1.8 version to which I updated, not the original 4.1.7 version.
Go I guess, the case is closed. Thanks all for your replies!

P.S. Unfortunately I discovered that there is no Java for NV+ because there is no Java for this kind of Sparc processor. So all the trouble was for nothing. Oh well..
    • Gragus,

Hi. My name is Aaron. I work for Vault Services, the providers of the ReadyNAS Vault. I wanted to address your concerns about our pricing. What you've seen so far is our Enterprise plans, which are designed for business users. We just rolled out Personal plans, designed for private use. The entry level plan is 100 GB for $9.95 per month or $99.50 per year, which is competitive with even the most modestly priced plans on the market today. Here are all of our personal plans detailed on the new website: http://readynas.cloudr.com/plans/personal/. We'll roll them out soon on our main website too. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any further questions you may have.
