Hardware Errors on Mirrored 750GB Seagate Disk on NV+(4.1.6)
Hi All,
I'm running 2 x 750 GB Seagate drives (as originally supplied on the NV+) one of which is exhibiting drive errors.
The NV+ reports current config as under:
Online, X-RAID, 2 disks, 71% of 688 GB used
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.6 [1.00a043]
This started when we moved PST files over to the NV+ to have clients access them online.
However, when indexing these PST files (with Lookout), then the NV+ would lock up and now the log is reporting the HD errors. (Only one disk reporting)
The only way to restart the machine was a forced shutdown, so the logs reflect this (Have not opened that Outlook client, due to the fact that it locks up the NV+, which is why there are no problems since the 17 Feb note in the log):
Fri Feb 17 04:00:07 IST 2012 ATA error count has increased in the last day. Disk 2: Previous count: 1656 Current count: 1677 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.
Thu Feb 16 12:44:03 IST 2012 RAID sync finished on volume C. The volume is now fully redundant.
Thu Feb 16 04:00:05 IST 2012 ATA error count has increased in the last day. Disk 2: Previous count: 0 Current count: 1656 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.
Wed Feb 15 21:44:01 IST 2012 System is up.
Wed Feb 15 21:15:03 IST 2012 RAID sync started on volume C.
Wed Feb 15 21:14:22 IST 2012 Improper shutdown detected. To ensure data integrity, a filesystem check should be performed by rebooting the NAS through Frontview with the volume scan option enabled.
Wed Feb 15 16:42:47 IST 2012 System is up.
Wed Feb 15 16:09:07 IST 2012 RAID sync started on volume C.
Wed Feb 15 16:07:37 IST 2012 Improper shutdown detected. To ensure data integrity, a filesystem check should be performed by rebooting the NAS through Frontview with the volume scan option enabled.
Wed Feb 15 14:05:22 IST 2012 A SATA reset has been performed on one or more of your disks that may have affected the RAID parity integrity. It is recommended that you perform a RAID volume resync from the RAID Settings tab ( accessible in the Volumes page => Volume tab in FrontView ). The resync process will run in the background, and you can continue to use the ReadyNAS in the meantime.
Wed Feb 15 14:05:07 IST 2012 Access to the disk on channel (??) is producing I/O errors. Although the array is still redundant, please replace this drive as soon as possible, as it is likely to fail soon.
If we are currently on X-RAID, then I could just slip in another disk and it should become redundant, allowing me to remove the one bad disk - or do I need to add 2 more disks?
However, I just purchased 2 Western Digital 2 GB disks, which this firmware (4.1.6) might not be able to handle, right?
I know I should do a backup before updating firmware, so need to know whether the NV+ would recognize the 2 TB Western Digital Caviar Blacks (WD2002FAEX) as they are?
Thanks for any feedback on this!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI said to add your extra disk, I think.
Actually what I would recommend you do is ensure you have a good backup, then remove the 2TB disk from the NAS, update to the latest firmware and then do a factory default (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu) with just your 2TB disks in the NAS. - SuperFlyBoy1Aspirant

Well, just took the other spare WD 2TB disks, put it in an external HD USB enclosure, formatted it with my Win7 laptop, hooked it up to the front USB port, configured a backup job for the C drive and let it rip.
Getting errors like this (also HD enclosure light went red, disk hot):
cp: preserving permissions for '/USB_HDD_1/./Company7/IMAGE (2).PDF': Operation not supported
cp: preserving permissions for '/USB_HDD_1/./Company7/Invoice Nos new.xls': Operation not supported
Therefore, the backup failed.
(Now checking disk (brand-new) for errors on the Win7 laptop - this disk running quite hot, maybe I should use WD Greens instead?) - SuperFlyBoy1AspirantI took the risk of updating with the one primary 750GB disk and it went successfully.
I cannot say the same about the WD Blacks - they seem to be running *very* hot - especially the one which failed the backup, but a SpeedFan analysis of the drive did not show any problems. - SuperFlyBoy1AspirantI just reformatted the WD 2TB in Slot3 as it was giving substantial errors with the NV+, and reinstalled it into Slot2, with the new firmware in place.
It is now doing an expandable X-RAID intialization, which is great!
The down aspect of this is that the NV+ probably fried the other WD Black 2TB (brandy-new too!) and this is why it's running hot.
Could be a problem with the USB SATA enclosure?? Shows a date of 2007...
Would WD give me a new drive under their guarantee if it's running hot (but drive is accessible?) - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
Not sure, but if they do you would get a refurbished replacement. If you think the drive is malfunctioning, it might be better to return it to the seller. Amazon for instance will replace with no questions asked.SuperFlyBoy wrote: Would WD give me a new drive under their guarantee if it's running hot (but drive is accessible?) - SuperFlyBoy1Aspirant

Unfortunately, I didn't buy it in the US (as I would usually do - due to the urgent need of replacing the 750GB drive showing errors), so therefore went locally outside the US. (for even more $$!)
Will have to explore the option with the local distributor here in India...not sure anything will result from it though! - SuperFlyBoy1Aspirant
mdgm wrote: Yes X-RAID uses the capacity of the smallest disk.
Yes, I show this right now:
RAID Configuration
Configuration: X-RAID (Expandable RAID), 2 disks
Status: Redundant
RAID Disks:
Ch 1 : Seagate ST3750640NS [698 GB] 694 GB allocated
Ch 2 : WDC WD2002FAEX-007BA0 [1862 GB] 694 GB allocated
The question would then be, how do I expand the capacity of the larger drives?
If I add more disks of 2TB, will they start to use the full capacity of the 2TB drives?
I gather I should do the backup of the data and then reset the unit - is that the only option?mdgm wrote: For 2TB disks you should be running RAIDiator 4.1.7 or later.
Also if your 2TB disk is 4k sector you will want to do a backup followed by a factory reset.
Should one be using a disk formatted with 4k sectors? Is that the recommended method? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired

Replace all the lower capacity disks with 2TB disks.SuperFlyBoy wrote:

Only if all the disks installed are 2TB disks.SuperFlyBoy wrote:

To get 4k sector partition alignment, yes.SuperFlyBoy wrote: mdgm wrote: For 2TB disks you should be running RAIDiator 4.1.7 or later.

Disks either use 4k sectors or 512-byte sectors. If the partitions are aligned for 512-byte sectors but not for 4k sectors you will have poor write performance if you use any 4k sector disks. So if you choose any 4k sector disks you will need to make sure you are running 4.1.7 or later, backup your data and do a factory reset.
Btw if you download your logs (Status > Logs > Download all logs), extract the zip contents and take a look at volume.log what is the block size? - SuperFlyBoy1Aspirant

As per the logs:
Block size: 16384 - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredGood. That's a separate issue I was wondering about.
So it's just the 4k sector partition alignment that needs to be considered.
