Permission pro 312
I continue to struggle with my goal of migrating to a new pro 312 from my ultra plus. I created a share on my volume and then rysnc'd a share from my ultra plus. Then to test I swap host names for the nas. Then I get an argument when trying to open files on the 312, it claims I don't have permission. Logged into the NAS with admin. Tried to reset (Share-Share settings-File permissions) and then the nas complains about can't set file access, it prods (rather cryptically facl_change fail uid=99 gid=99) me to check uid & gid and despite this error message, a few minutes later I get a notice confirming success. However still no access. As an aside on initial power up I did establish a user but I really want everyone to have access and have since deleted. Another weirdness, the share's file permissions lists 2 guests. I have reset this stupid thing 4 times to factory and each time some nuttiness happens. And of course I have had no similar issues with ether my old Duo or my Ultra Plus.

- rgm60527AspirantSo the second backup has now completed this time rsync first changed the share permission from guest to root while the backup was running but this time instead upon completion instead of an unknown numeric as in first copy, the owner and group was left as root. Now the nas has started on the 3 backup and the share owner has been changed from guest to 65534 and the group to the same.
Not knowing if this behavior is expected, seems bizarre to me. especially as there are no users or groups established on the target nas for these backups. it almost seems like the silly thing just makes up owner and groups.
But my million dollar questions is in the 312 if I change the owner and group back to guest does it ripple though all of the sub folders and files and set the permissions to match? - StephenBGuru - Experienced Userrsync isn't making up the uid/gid - it is attempting to preserve the owner/group of the source files (e.g., on the ultra). In the case of backup 3, it is using the uid/gid for nobody/nogroup on the ultra - which is likely what the source share is set to.
Resetting permission/ownership from the web ui should ripple through, but the problem will recur every time you run the backup. If this is a pure backup, the one option is to ignore it. If you don't care about ownership on the source, you could also change the file ownerships on the ultra to admin/admin which will map.
You might also try using the backup option to reset ownership. Though that also had an issue when I tried it (pre-RN102 launch) - the backup job picked up the current ownership of the share (when the backup was already completed and the damage done). Hopefully that has been fixed. - rgm60527Aspirantthanks, understanding the nature of the problem helps and as long as this is a one-time problem fixable by changing the group and owner , I can live with the behavior as these rsyncs are a one-time event. And for the tip about the resync reset ownership option, didn't see it and I think I will try it as I' m not (yet) rely on the 312.
- rgm60527AspirantOk, tried another rsync with the checkbox to reset permissions and still encounter files not accessible crap. During the rsync I noticed a bunch of different permissions would be listed for the share when I checked but upon completion it set the them to guest and guest. Tried to use the reset button in the NAS interface and it fails with the original message that started this thread and I suspect the files permissions aren't being set and or reset. But for now I am just giving up for now with dlink/readynas /pro 312 as in my opinion its not supportable for my needs or alternatively I am not cape of supporting it so I will just keep relying on my Ultra Plus.
- rgm60527AspirantI don’t believe the option in 6.1.5. Rsync works to reset owners and group after transfer if the copied files have owners or groups that don't exist on the 6.1.5 based NAS. In addition, I think there are problems with Share - [Folder name] - Setting - File Access - Reset feature when the gid or uid that doesn't exist on the destination NAS.
Here is how I solved my problems.
On the Ultra Plus, I copied a share using rsync to a temporary share (I didn't want to mess with my live data) and I reset the owner and group to admin under the shares advanced options.
Then I rynced the temporary share using the Pro 312 as host to the correct destination share name. Once the rsync had completed I went to Share - [Folder name] - Settings - File Access and reset the owner and group to Guest.
By following this procedure, I think I am good to go and have been running on the Pro 312 without a peep of problem for most of sunday and today.
One comment and I'm not sure, if it meaningful as I may have gotten the order of things confused a bit. At one point, I think I still had a permission problem and I didn't have full read/write access on some files. Using Windows I changed the permission to read/write from unchecking the read only check box. Or, as I said this was just an imaginary event that didn't really happen or have the affect described. - shedzAspirantHi I am also having trouble with permissions. Permissions resetting, and/or not filtering through to files within shares. I'm using a ReadyNas 312. Unless I set permissions to everyone for each access method (ftp, http, etc etc) I cannot see the files or folders when accessing the NAS on (AFP/SMB) or even ftp...this is not to mention ftps doesn't even score a 0/5. This is all the more difficult because I am not an IT specialist and it was sold to me as the answer to all my remote access needs. Hmmm. It may be just me but the system had a netgear specialist baffled for 5 hours and still got nowhere.
Question..Are you still using it? If so, how did you solve your issues? - shedzAspirantp.s. readycloud is slower than dialup....
