Pro 6 (6.6.0 beta 2 - T117) turning on but stuck at booting with only ReadyNAS ons panel. Boot menu

Pro 6 (6.6.0  beta 2 - T117 ) turning on but stuck at booting with only ReadyNAS ons panel. Boot menu.

When I powered the NAS on it would not boot. It said ReadyNAS on the LCD, there was no link light on the NIC, RAIDar could not get to the unit.

not visible in the router DHCP table anymore (tried both LAN's)

The only thing that changed was that we had a power outage last week. I did need to not acces the unit so I did not immediately corelate with that, but that's the onbly thing that I can think of.

When I power on my Pro 6 (6 disks; ReadyNAS OS 6.6.0) the LED panel shows "ReadyNAS" and nothing much was happening.
I tried to access the boot menu but it doesn't work. I tried it also without the disks, still not accesible.
I tried to do a USB recovery (tried 5 USB sticks, all formated with the recovery utility, but it doesn't work either.
I opened the case and the LED 1 on the motherboard is lit red (normal ? or it shows a defectve something ?)

I can not check the memory or disks becaus I can not get in the boot menu.

I do not have a VGA header cable (should I get one?)

What are my next options. I have a lot of data on it. warranty expired two years ago.

I read on the forums that it may be a power supplyu issue (makes sennse in the context of the power outage - I am in Quebec - happens fairly often). Because if , let's say the disks are bad, it shpud have gotten into boot menu when I had no disks in the unit.

I always had beta versions, and got stuck only once (troubleshooted by mdgm  - thanks again). The unit is built like a tank. I do also hae a 8 bay synology, because it was cheaper, but the netgear has more ooomph though being older.

Since I first got my first irfant NV I was always happy with my ReadyNAs units.

PS. geting a 300 series would be just a disk swaping thing I assume (worse case scenario in case I can not fix the unit)

I am familiar with building a PC, I did upgrade the CPU and case fans to the Noctua silent one (not the source though - too many things to unscrew and unplug - maybe I shoud have in hindsight ?)

Can I buy a power source form netgear with the right molex connectores so I do not have to hack a SFX one ?

It could well be the PSU, but that is a guess.

We don't sell replacement PSUs for this, but there are suggestions on the community as to which ones you can try. You may need an extension cable for it.

The 300 series would be a step down in performance from the Pro 6. The RN516, RN526X and RN626X would be logical choices for a new NAS.

Yes you should be able to power down both systems and migrate your disks across keeping the order the same.

We don't recommend sticking on beta firmware once production firmware is available.

I see... I do not really want to toss the unit if possible, I would like to fix it.

Can you please point me on how to isolate the problem?

The small red LED1 on the motherboard is normally lit, or it is generic for a failure ?

What would you do in my place to try to revive the unit ?

and while I am at it the 500 unit would give me more bandwith ?

I am the sole user of the unit and it is used just for my DVD rips and family movies.

      thank you

        That is normal.

The only practical steps I can think are to

        (a) try the other ethernet jack

        (b) try replacing the PSU

The 526X and 626x are faster than the pro, but with a single user and gigabit ethernet you are mostly limited by ethernet.   If you do real-time streaming, the 526X/626X can transcode HD in real time, which is something the pro can't do.

  • One thing to consider is that PLEX more recently added a feature that enables to to pre-transcode new media so that it can be direct played to various devices. So a NAS without the grunt to live-transcode can still get the job done in the background, if you don't mind waiting for the conversion -- sort of the same way it handles syncing.

Yes.  And though it takes space on the NAS, the converted media usually quite a bit smaller than the original.

Thanks. I do not use or plan in using Plex.

My question is about finding a firmware version 6.2.4 (the one used to upgrade from 4)

Where can I download previous firmware versions so I can hopefully revive the unit.

I will be happy with even a version OS 4.

        Thank you
