Readynas 102 extremely slow after update to 6.4.1

I have a Readynas 102 system with 2 2TB discs. there is about 230 GB of data on the discs. Yesterday I updated to 6.4.1, as suggested in the administration page. After that the system is extremely slow. I use windows 7 pc's and an Asus modem, all wired. In windows explorer it takes minutes to get the folder tree, if it comes with an answer at all. In many cases the response is, disc inaccesible.

Is there anybody who can help me with this,

thanks,

Joop Baltussen

      Dear StephenB

thanks for your reply, by following all threads on slow performance of 6.4.1 and 6.4.0 I tried to turn off the virus check and that solved the issue. System seems to perform normal now.

      - reading all the contribution I am still staggered that Netgear issues an update with major flaws. It works if you turn off the virus check, it sounds like a car that after a check-up only drives in case the air bags are disabled. Other people are happy that Netgear does not write software for aeroplanes, and I join them in this opinion. How difficult is it to understand that most customers prefer no update above a disfunctional update that make you spend half the night finding a solution as the system is needed next day for work. The absolute limit is that they offer to give support at a rate of 107 dollars for a problem they caused themselves in the first place.

So, still thanks for your interest and maybe it helps somebody else who unsuspectingly pressed the updat button.

      Joop

Don't know if you'll read this but like you I am stunned that Netgear can allow a piece of firmware, 6.4.0 to be rolled out with so many issues, then provide 6.4.1 which if nothing else has made it worse for me.

Then to rub salt into the wound when I raise a request for support they want to charge me nearly £100 for support to deal with an issue on a 102 which is only 18 months old and was working fine on 6.2.5.

The latest thoughts from Netgear is that I try a beta firmware. Like I fell off a Christmas tree. If a piece of supposed tested firmware wrecks my systems performance and ability to provide reliable backups do they really think I want to install some beta firmware?

        Hi JoopB,

For the meantime, have the said AV feature disabled so you can access the ReadyNAS in your network using SMB file-sharing protocol. NETGEAR is currently working on a fix for this issue and it will be available soon.

        Kind regards,

  • I have a ReadyNAS 316 with 6x4TB in RAID 5, since upgrading to 6.4.1 the the RAID is crippled down to around 5-10MB/s

I never had antivirus turned on and its not on.

I upgraded to 6.4.1 several days ago and never thought much of it, but then I started to see some problems with accessing files over samba, at first I thought the newly upgraded Windows 10 system was to blame so after testing on another PC and after ruling everything else out I realized the probem was related to the ReadyNAS FW update.. (5 days after upgrading to 6.4.1)  I downgraded back to 6.4.0 hoping it would solve the problem only to realize that this it did not, performance still suffered, So moving forward I am back at 6.4.1..

At first I thought the problem was samba, but after running direct disk benchmarks I noticed the problem effects all disk operations.

    RAID5

    Timing buffered disk reads:  24 MB in  3.62 seconds =   6.62 MB/sec

Sansdisk flash drive connected to USB3 port

    Timing buffered disk reads: 162 MB in  3.01 seconds =  53.77 MB/sec

      Hello bigstar,

Can you try disabling SMB then re-enable it and see if there any improvement?

6.4.2-T59 (Beta 1) is also already available, you might want to try it.

      Regards,

I disabled SMB and then re-enabled it, no difference.

I upgraded to the beta FW and the problem is now solved.

        What was the bug?

        root@nas-6E-51-C8:~# hdparm -Tt /dev/md127

        /dev/md127:
         Timing cached reads:   1882 MB in  2.00 seconds = 940.34 MB/sec
         Timing buffered disk reads: 1014 MB in  3.01 seconds = 337.34 MB/sec

        Thank you very much.

  • Also experiencing this issue - dead slow response over SMB with my RN102 since upgrading to 6.4.1. Have now performed a factory reset and am restoring from backup. I'll keep you posted if this sorts it.

      Ok thank you for this.

Elsewhere someone has posted a link to enable users to go back to 6.2.5 which for me worked a treat. I haven't had the courage to do this as my business relies on my 102 and while it's slow it does work.

I think it's absolutely appalling that users have been put to all this inconvenience. Once or rather if my 102 ever works properly again, once it does I'll never update my firmware again.

      Good luck.

      John

Hopefully you tried disabling the antivirus service first.

        Hi.

no offence but this idea of disabling the AV is the only idea that Netgear come up with, again and again and again....   And yes it is disabled.

        but thank you.

  • I tried that initially with no change. But thought i would disable it again and then restart the server - success. Folders now load quickly again over SMB.

Will leave AV off until the next update. Thanks all.

It looks like there are multiple different issues being posted in this thread which does make it difficult to follow. When lots of users are posting in a thread it is difficult to provide more than general advice. Problems may appear to be the same to end users but have very different causes.

YorkBoy as you have anti-virus disabled your issue is a different one. Support has recommended you try 6.4.2 beta, but you can wait for the production release and follow up with support on that.

I certainly wouldn't recommend never updating the firmware. Firmware updates include bug fixes, security fixes and other changes which are beneficial. You may wish to visit the Community to see other user's feedback on firmware before updating to a release that you cannot downgrade from.

I have client that just call because they upgrade to 6.4.2 and the system started running slow. It is good that I found this forum and ask them to disable AV. It looks like it helped with the slowness. So I guess this has been a problem for sometime and never been fix. I would like some feedback on why it is so hard to solve this problem? I have been using Netgear Readynas for 10+ years at home and also installed for serveral clients. Great product for small business and normally works as required.

I think this started last year so over a 6 month problem that a company the size and quality of Netgear can find a solution? Please take care of the users that buy and support you by supporting us.

Can you give 6.5.0 Beta a try? We have made some changes in Beta 1. Furthermore, if you are using the anti-virus service Beta 1 has some improvements with further ones to come in Beta 2.

With respect, if this beta software (which is beta for one very good reason) causes me problems is someone from Netgear going to call around and fix my NAS straight away or will this be yet another 5 month wait?

As I keep repeating I have AV turned off............
