ReadyNAS 104 - Degraded Volume and Disk Test

Hi,

I have a ReadyNAS 104 with four 2TB Drives. My system show degraded and I have started a Disk Test which, I assume, will take between 8-16 hrs to complete.

1.  I have 4 drives in but only drives 1 and 4 show up (see below).  Is this normal?

2.  Can I remove a drive while that is going on or do I have to wait?

Thank you for any help you can provide

    Hi GGlover24,

    Welcome to the Community!

No, it is not normal that only two disks are detected.

You can remove the drives while the disk test is in progress. You need to power down the NAS first then remove the drives afterward.

You can also download the NAS system logs then provide it to us so we can check why the disks 2 and 3 are not detected. You can do that by uploading the logs to a file-sharing site then send the download link via PM (private message)

    Regards,

  • I am assuming that I have to order new drives as it may be that at least two of the drives has failed and the other two are dying too.

My question is should I drives matching the same Cache, in this case 64 or can I mix-n-match the Cache size?

    Thanks

You can mix-and-match the cache size.

      Hi GGlover24

Do you have a backup of your data?

I checked the kernel.logs and it is flooded with errors from disks 2 and 3.

It will be best if you connect those disks to a PC then run a diagnostic test using the disk manufacturer's tool, then replace the disks that come out bad. Factory reset the NAS then restore from backups.

If the issue still re-occurs, the issue might be on the chassis already.

      Regards,

Thank you for helping me out, I appreicate it.

Can I just replace those two drives, 2 and 3 or are all the drives bad?
