ReadyNAS NV+ v2 won't work with WD HDD's
Hi all,
Here's the situation...
Bought a new ReadyNAS NV+ v2 with latest firmware installed 5.3.7
Installed 2 x WD HDD's 1TB each WD10EZRX
First boot-up everything went fine and was using the NAS last night.
when I came in this morning the NAS had crashed. I had to pull the power plug to reboot. This is where the fun started.
I have tried everything. Tried WD Lifeguard Write Zeros, tried deleting partition/creating/formatting/not-formatting. Tried diskpart 'clean' - at this stage i'm out of ideas
The HDD's will run through Factory Reset no problem and go as far as choosing which RAID set-up I want in RAIDar. After this stage the errors start, some of which:
Raid Creation Failed
I have tried different RAID configurations, tried 1 HDD at a time etc. I am totally out of ideas.
The strange thing is that when I install an old Seagate 160GB HDD, it works flawlessly! (Didn't have time to check if it crashes after a few hours)
Are these HDD's simply not compatible with this NAS? Seems strange, because it worked for a few hours last night

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou should have bought the WD RED WD10EFRX. Caviar Green disks are designed with features which make them a bad choice for RAID use.

I didn't know this at the time :( I was only going on a recommendation.
Is there any way to use the current disks with a RAID configuration, or am I better off biting the bullet and buying new hard drives? I can't return these as i've opened the pack - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could try running WDIDLE3 in your PC or if you can get the NAS to boot and are comfortable with SSH use the tool here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=59700
It'd be better to put the Green disks in USB enclosures and use them as backup disks. - alt1Aspirant

This NAS needs to be 100% reliable. I will bite the bullet and get some Red disks. Thanks for the info - expensive lesson learned
-EDIT- I'm goin gto give it a try regardless, just for educational sake. Can you advise on what settings need to be altered?
Thank you for your help - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou'd need to increase the number of seconds for the WDIDLE3 timer. The disks put themselves to sleep far too quickly for RAID use.

Thanks, I have checked a guideline which recommended 300 seconds.
There was also another WD application (Not Lifeguard, but a DOS one) that I Googled earlier... of course it's gone out of my head. Something like WDLDP (grrrr!) => Would appreciate any advise you can offer there - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDo you mean WDTLER? That shouldn't be necessary to use as the ReadyNAS has added compatibility for WD drives that don't support TLER

OK Thanks, I am going to try WDIDLE3 - alt1AspirantWDIDLE3 worked with one HDD, when I added the other (after using WDIDLE3 on it also) I was back to my original problem.
I'm just going to buy WD Red HDD's. Unless anyone can give me a reason not to? - ianrenAspirantI have just tried to install the first of 2 x WD10EFRX into my ReadyNAS NV+2 to replace an existing failing Seagate drive. It already has 2 x WD20EARX drives installed which have been working perfectly.
In replacing the first WD10EFRX with a "hot swap", the drive was detected and the start of rebuild was reported. After 2 days, it still hadn't completed and having removed the drive and checked on a Windows pc, the drive hadn't even been initialised. I successfully initialised the disk under Windows. I thought I would try the second of the 2 drives, and initialised that in Windows before intstalling into my NV+. Again, it was detected, and the start of rebuild notified. This has now been running for a day, and shows no sign of completion.
The difficulty is that in this version 5.3.7, there is no indication as to progress, unlike my Sparc based ReadyNAS Duo running 4.1.10 which reports an indication of status under the rebuilding process. I have therefore no idea on what is going on apart from the fact that the status is "Not Redundant" which is a statement of the obvious!!
I am presuming from the previous postings that these drives have been successfully installed into this model of ReadyNAS, and would have expected this as they are listed on Netgear's compatability list, and are advertised as "NASware" drives.
Please does anyone have any ideas on how to get these successfully installed? I have previously upgraded drives on two other Sparc based ReadyNAS Duo's using drives listed in the compatability list without any difficulties, and so therefore assume that there is nothing wrong with the procedure I am adopting.
Many thanks.
