resurrecting a RNV2-S2-0000
I found an old RNV2-S2-0000 that a co-worker was throwing out, and I was wanting to reuse it. bad thing is that it was only the box. I would like to know if I could buy the lockable trays for it? also what Hard Drives are compatible with the RNV2-S2-0000 and are they only RAID drives? cause I would like to use it as a home network storage server.

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSure. What you need is the RND4TRAY1. It's available direct from NetGear: http://store.netgear.com/store/netgear/en_US/pd/productID.124539100
I recommend:
1. Put one disk in the NAS
2. If necessary do a factory default using the boot menu (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu)
3. Upgrade to latest RAIDiator (currently 4.1.8: http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_4_1_8_Notes
4. Power down and put rest of disks in NAS
5. Do a factory default using the boot menu (http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu)
This will give you a clean setup on the latest firmware.
Be sure to choose your disks from the HCL
Welcome to the forum! - jchappy65AspirantI dont have 5 hard drives at the moment, I only have one 500GB Seagate HDD. Is their a way I can not use RAID format for the time being and just use it as a home network server for file storage? Also when I placed the HDD in slot 1 and powered on, I get stuck in the booting phase. The display is just stuck on "booting..." while the Activity indicator is flashing along with the power button pulsing.
I really just need help connecting my ReadyNAS to my desktop via the network and getting past the initial setup... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredTry a factory default via the boot menu: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_use_the_boot_menu#duo_nv_nv_x6600
Do note that the disk has to be wiped so backup any data on the disk first. - jchappy65AspirantIt's a Blank drive so no worries there, Thanks for the link.
As I was reading your post the display kicked back on and now I have an IP address with a Capacity reading from the Drive. BUT, when I go to the ip address on my desktop I get redirected to http://192.168.x.xxx/shares/ and I get this and can't click on anything but the logout button. Is their a program or some setup I could do To manage files on that drive via network?
*EDIT: What's the default user and pass for my device? Windows 7 just found it in the Networking window and I double-clicked an got to the login via http://192.168.x.xxx/admin/* - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSee http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/what_is_the_frontview_default_login_and_password_after_a_factory_default
Looks like your unit is running very old firmware. After logging into Frontview (https://ip.address.of.nas/admin) I would suggest you update the firmware, verify the firmware update was successful, then power down, put the rest of the disks in (if you wish to add any more disks now) and do another factory default on the latest firmware to get a clean setup on that firmware (as I suggested in my first post in the thread). A factory default on 4.1.7 or later will give you 4k sector alignment (important for when you want to move to using 4k sector disks - most 2TB disks are 4k sector disks). - jchappy65AspirantGreat Thanks, Just one more question... I did see that it is currently running RAIDiator v4.1.4, and I have downloaded v4.1.8, How do I go about updating the firmware?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found the update page in FrontView :) - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSwitch from the setup wizard to Advanced Control then go to System > Update > Local etc. Instructions for installing firmware are in the Release Notes e.g.: http://www.readynas.com/RAIDiator_4_1_8_Notes
After you've updated the firmware, verified it was successful and done a factory default I would then go through the setup wizard. No need to do the wizard now when you'll need to do it again after the factory default. - jchappy65AspirantThank you so much, Will do. It says "Booting... Checking root FS" at the moment I'm guessing because of the Firmware update....
EDIT: I followed the directions to perform a Factory Default reset (Holding in the Reset button on the back of the console for 30 seconds) and two LED flashes are supposed to happen, but they dont, and when I powered the NAS back on, it booted up normal, but after 5 minutes just idling it flashed for 3 seconds, "Vol C is dead" then went back to normal - jchappy65AspirantI left out one more detail...
I know that the HDD is good and not dead because I put it in my Windows 7 Desktop and it ran fine, no bugs or anything, Just ran some speed and cleaning tests and then wiped it and put the HDD in the NAS... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredDid you check the disk using SeaTools. Simply finding it to run "fine" is not enough to verify that the disk is O.K.
Considering the NAS is second hand you might want to try some tests such as the memory test: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/hardware/is_there_a_way_i_can_verify_if_my_memory_is_good
