Upgraded PRO 6 to 6.5.1, had fan problems, went back to 6.5.0 and all is well again
Hi,
After having succesfully used 6.5.0 on my PRO 6 since the day it came out, I upgraded to 6.5.1 today.
The system fan started to act weird. When putting the fans on COOL, it took a little while before they were speeding up. Setting them on BALANCED made the system fan turn red, after which it started an iteration of speeding up, slowing down, speeding up, etc.
Decided to go back to 6.5.0 and all is great again.
Could it be that the "Fan speed adjustment on systems with erratic fan readings" that were done in the 6.5.1 release are no longer compatible with a PRO 6?
Thanks!

Just to clarify - did you install the released 6.5.1 or 6.5.1-RC1?

Hi Stephen,
6.5.1, which you can download from http://downloadcenter.netgear.com/ -> storage -> ReadyNAS -> ReadyNAS-OS6.

I'm a bit confused which model is which... I have the 6.5.1 released today installed on a Pro (RNDP6000-100) and have no fan issues beyond the normal oddities I'm used to seeing with running OS 6 on it.
This unit was actually recently factory reset with firmware 6.5.0 on it (but I doubt that makes any difference in regards to fan speeds.)

I am having issues which have been reported as being v5.5.1 related other than the fan.
I see lots of talk about rolling back to 6.5.0, but no instructions as to where to get the firmware.
Could someone please post a link?
Regards!

The download links are in the Release Notes
For x86_64 units (including all legacy x86 units that are running OS6) you would use the x86 download link.We also have ReadyNASOS 6.5.2-T486 (Beta 1) firmware but there are no changes related to fans in the Release Notes so there may not be any changes related to that.

I have an Ultra 6. I upgraded this yesterday to 6.5.1 and encountered the same fan problems.
So I downgraded it to 6.5.0 and all works fine.
Today I upgraded to 6.5.2-T486 (Beta 1).
The fan behaviour is the same as under 6.5.1.
I.e. speeding up and immediately slowing down, speeding up, slowing down etc.

I am in need of some help with my Pro 6. I've upgraded from 4.2.28 to 6.5.1 without any issues other than my CPU fan reporting as 0rpm as I have moved the fan to the additional system fan header. I've managed to find some topics on how to fix it, however if I then label the 'System' fan as 'CPU' my fan will run at it's max speed no matter what setting I have it on. Whereas my system fan barely raises it's speed no matter the setting or how hot the sensor is reading.
Am I better off just leaving them both labled as system fans or will this cause other issues with them not spinning at the correct RPMs???
I've also just rolled back to version 6.5.0 and I'm still seeing the same issue.
below is a copy of my /etc/sensors.d/system.conf

- anubis1AspirantWould I be better off upgrading back to 6.5.1 or would that not matter too much?

Hi anubis1,
Well, that would be your call. Some have already downgraded and some dont'. Much better send in your logs and address it to mdgm to check what's wrong with the fan on your ReadyNAS system.
Kind regards,

As for me there is no difference between 6.5.0 and 6.5.1

Would be better to get logs on firmware where you are running into the problem. Logs on a firmware where you are not having issues are of little value.
- GPSIS_HQGuideHello mdgm
I will upgrade beack to v6.5.1 and email myself a like so the actions will be in the log.
May take a day or so, but its for the greater good right?

Just want'ed to give my experience as well. Same observations - same problems here.
My ReadyNAS turned itself off twice after installing 6.5.1 - after inspecting the log files it turnes out that one of the fans was turned off because it lost contact with it - and then the system of course overheated and turned it self off.
I thought I had a faulty fan - or that my modified fans (Noctua-NF-F12/Noctua-NF-R8) was not supported anymore :-(Then I found this thread - and after rolling back to 6.5.0 everything runs smothly again.
(except that I get prompted if I want to upgrade each time I log on to the webinterface)

For at least one user overriding the minimum fan speed (800) with a higher figure (1000) worked.
If you are using a 3rd party fan it may well have a different minimum fan speed.
In the next 6.6.0 build (6.6.0 Beta 2) I believe we will try to raise the minimum fan speed automatically if needed.

I see that 6.5.2 final release is out. Has anyone upgrade and see if the fan issues reported in 6.5.1 were addressed?
Thanks!
- GPSIS_HQGuideI have not, but my issue [in addition to fan] is that the email links would only download ~400kb of the shared file.
Now that I have users viewing files it is not a good time for me to Beta test.

Just upgraded from 4.x to 6.5.2, one of the fans keeps switching on and off (or high/low speed).
When downgrading to 6.5.0 everything solved.

I just installed 6.6.0 on my Ultra 6. The fan speed is fluctuating continuously, even while booting and the fans run on max speed. This didn't happen on version 6.5.0 while the I had the same issue on 6.5.1 and 6.5.2. temps are quite normal (cpu 35C system 40C). Everything else is working fine.
Strange thing is, now I’m writing this and the device is running for approximately 40 minutes, the fan speed suddenly is running smooth. After this I rebooted the device, while rebooting and the fans are running on max speed it started fluctuating again. After it fully booted, the fan speed is still fluctuating on lower speed.
Is there anything I can do about this?
Edit: now the fans run normal 11 mins after booting

You could try setting e.g.
# echo 1000 > /etc/frontview/min_fan_speed_override
then
# systemctl restart readynasd

Thanks to those who went to 6.6.0 and reported back on the fan behaviour. I continue to have a great experience with 6.5.0, unlike 6.5.1 and 6.5.2 and I hope that Netgear looks back at this version and "copies and pastes" the correctly functioning code into the future 6.6.1.
If not, 6.5.0 might be the final destination for my PRO 6..., which works great and is far better than the old OS 4. I just hope I won't accidently hit the wrong button on the automated upgrade pop-up one day.
