Vista Home Premium/Duo V2 - mapped connection dropping

Hello--

Not sure where to start on fixing this. I've already Googled and tried a few solutions (including this one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/297684) even though none seem to apply to my exact problem. Not surprisingly then, none has worked.

In a nutshell, I installed my ReadyNAS Duo v2 last September and have been using with no problem since then, until last week. Computer that has RAIDar installed is connected to router with ethernet cable and is a Vista Home Premium 64-bit, SP2. The media share on the ReadyNAS is mapped as drive U. Firmware on the ReadyNAS is 5.3.7.

Now, in the last week, I will suddenly not be able to connect to it. I see the red X in My Computer, and when I click on it I get an error message that says an error has occurred while reconnecting to U:\\NAS-AO-46-4E\media , The connection has not been restored---for one of three different reasons. #1 is the one that most commonly displays: 1) The local device name is already in use; 2) The network path was not found; or 3) The specified network name is no longer available.

Repeatedly clicking on the drive in My Computer, it eventually connects, but it does not stay connected for long. (Or sometimes it does, this is very randm.) For example, after it is a connected I rip a CD just fine, then immediately start ripping a second CD, and the first few tracks I get an error that the ripper was not able to write to the file because the filepath U:// whatever is not available. But by the 5th track (usually) it will start writing to U again. (Then I have to quickly re-rip the first 4 tracks--frustrating!)

I would think this is purely a Windows Vista problem, but one more clue. While the drive shows as disconnected, RAIDar will find it, but when I try to log into it to manage it, my browser (Chrome) says website is not available, the server refused the connection.

A few additional details. 1) While all this is going on, the ReadyNAS never stops streaming music over my wireless network to a player, so I know it is still connected. 2) There have been no changes worth noting, just the usual Windows updates. Nevertheless, for the heck of it I tried doing a system restore to a restore point from a month ago. That didn't solve the problem (although it did create others, like Chrome stopped working.) 3) When I couldn't log in using RAIDar I tried typing the IP address of the ReadyNAS into my browser, and couldn't connect to it that way, either.

Anybody have any suggestions what I can try? I'm glad my music is streaming, but this disconnecting/reconnecting while trying to rip CDs is driving me crazy!!

The relevant ports for Windows Explorer access are 137, 138, 139, and 445. 445 is the most important. Think of a port like a PO box in a post office, and each network service as a PO box renter. Data comes into the PC addressed to the port, and is put in the "mailbox" for pickup by the "customer". In this particular case, the network service is built into windows, so there isn't a program name to put into the firewall (as the "customer").

I have a vista machine also, but it is running a symantec firewall - so I've never paid much attention to the vista firewall settings. Though I think you need to enable the following on the "sharing and discovery" pane.
    File sharing
    Public folder sharing
    Printer sharing
    Password protected sharing
  • Hi StephenB--

Busy weekend, didn't have time to experiment much. I did determine that leaving Windows firewall on, but turning TrendMicro off, the problem goes away. So I think it is some TrendMicro update in the last couple of weeks that has caused this issue, something about the way TM interacts with the Windows firewall. I've posted in their forums and will start a trouble ticket with them if I need to. If I can't get a solution from them, I'm going to try excepting the ports you specified--or I might try that anyway.

I do appreciate all the help you've been giving me, and will report back if/when I get a final resolution to this problem.
  • So, I wanted to update where I am--which, in a nutshell, is no better off than before.

Over in the Trend Micro forums a TM employee, Ken, recommended renaming a TM registry entry so that it would be re-created on reboot.

That didn't help and doing it a second time per his suggestion didn't either.

So, where I am on this is I plan to connect a Windows 7 laptop to the router by cable and see if it has the same problems. If it does, I'll know it's not specific to Vista, but likely is the way Trend Micro (also on the Win7 machine) interacts with the firewall. On the other hand, if no problems and all good, I assume there is no problem installing RAIDar on that machine and using it to manage the NAS when needed?

    Correct.
  • Can an ethernet cable be run directly from the computer to the Duo to manage it, bypassing the router altogether?

Yes, This is a "direct connect". The NAS has an autosensing nic, so there is no need for a crossover cable.

If you are using dhcp with the NAS, note it will fail over to 192.168.168.168. You just need to configure the PC to use a suitable static address (for instance, 192.168.168.100, subnet 255.255.255.0)
  • I'm now thinking my problem is not Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security or the Windows firewall. With Windows firewall off, connection to mapped drive was lost after about 10 minutes. Turned of TM Titanium, connection was immediately restored. However, 10 minutes later it dropped again. That is, I lost the connection with both the firewall and TM Titanium turned off.

I think next I am going to try using Windows 7 (with TM Titanium installed) and XP (with AVG installed) computers to manage the NAS, to see if they have the same problem or not. If they both have the same behavior, I'll focus on the network, the router and the NAS. If they don't I'm going to assume it is a Vista OS issue, and proceed from there.
  • UPDATE: The old Windows XP computer with the media share on the NAS mapped as a drive hasn't had a single disconnect, so this does appear to be a Vista OS problem. Yesterday afternoon Windows Update prompted me to install MS update KB2840149 which this blog http://www.winbeta.org/news/kb2840149-u ... te-reboots says fixed a botched update to the Windows 7 (??) file system kernel-mode driver that created conflicts with some third-party software, resulting in system errors. Since installing that update I have not noticed a disconnect, other than when the system went to sleep overnight, and it immediately re-connected upon waking this morning. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this update solved whatever was going on.
  • Everything has remained solid for a week now. I think the Windows update solved the issue. Thanks StephenB for trying so hard to help me out. It's a shame that MS caused us both so much pain.
