Vista Wireless Performance Questionnaire
With the amount of Vista issues on the forum, we are putting out a questionnaire here to get more information on the setups to get get a grasp of what is happening. Based on user feedback over the last several months, we've also updated the questionnaire with some possible solutions as well that you can easily try out.
0) Updated to Windows Vista SP1? SP1 contains a number of network changes that improved overall throughput with the ReadyNAS.
1) Tried changing MTU on ReadyNAS and laptop to 1492? Instructions on how to change Vista MTU at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm . A couple users had success keeping the ReadyNAS MTU at 1500 and switching Vista MTU to 1460.
2) What model of Wireless Router and firmware is being used?
3) What Wireless Card model and firmware being used?
4) What connection speed are you seeing for Wireless Adapter (i.e. 54 Mbps)?
5) What's the connection speed between ReadyNAS to Router (10/100/1000 Mbps) -- you can see this in FrontView's Network page.
6) What's the throughput from Windows XP to ReadyNAS and Vista to ReadyNAS? Both Machines at or near same location?
7) Whats the throughput from Windows XP to Vista?
8) Does disabling firewall help? One user reported problem solved by disabling Symantec firewall.
9) Does uninstalling anti-virus help? One user reported problem solved by uninstalling CA anti-virus.
10) Does enabling jumbo frames work? Several folks reported problem solved by enabling jumbo frames, and this also had the effect of speeding up wired transfers.
11) Are you able to try another router? A couple users reported replacing current router/switch solved the problem.

Thanks for filling out the questionnaire. - JellenAspirantMy Wireless problems are fixed when I change Readynas Duo to 1492 but then my wired gigabit clients slow down by an average of 50% Is this normal?
1) Has MTU been changed to 1492 and running Windows Vista SP1
Yes
2) Model of Wireless Router and Firmware used.
D-Link DGL-4300 FW. 1.9 (latest) also tested with 1.7 (no difference)
3) Wireless Card Model and Firmware
Intel Wifi 5100 AGN driver 12.1.0.14
4) Connection Speed that you are seeing for Wireless Adapter. (54Mbps/24Mbps)
54 Mbps
5) Connection Speed between ReadyNAS to Router (10/100/1000Mbps)
1000Mbps
6) Throughput from Windows XP to ReadyNAS and Vista to ReadyNAS. Both Machines at or near same location. (Read/Write MB/sec)
XP up and download 2.5MiB/sec
Vista up and download freezes or averages around 10Kib/sec When I change to MTU 1942 Everything fine and 2.5MiB/sec
7) Throughput from Windows XP to Vista (Read/Write MB/sec)
From wired XP to wireless Vista up and download 2.5MiB/sec
Wired XP and Vista performance drops from 25MiB/sec download to 11MiB/sec when I change MTU to 1942
Don't want to suffer freezes and slow transfer rates on my Vista wireless but also need the full speed to my wired installation.
If you need more information to solve this I always want to do more testing...
Kind regards
Jellen
UPDATE: Also forgot to mention that I connected my Readynas to Vista and XP machine and still got a max read speed of 11MiB/sec when I change MTU to 1492, tried with other utp cable too - ChewbaccaAspirantJellen
Making the change to 1492 should not have a huge effect on your wired performance.
Let me try it here and see if I can reproduce your issue - JellenAspirantAny success in recreating the same problem?
Whatever I try it's always +- 50% slower when I turn MTU to 1492 which is necessary to acces it with my notebook.
I also connected a Vista and XP machine wired directly to the Duo but download stays the same at around 11 MiB/sec.
Did a few reboots of the unit and even reinstalled the firmware V4.1.4 but no luck...
Kind regards
Jellen - RdemariaAspirantAfter fighting with this same issue for some time, I changed the MTU on the NAS to 1492 and it fixed my wireless access problems to the files on the NAS. I really thought it was a Vista issue, but seems to be related to the wireless adapter. Unfortunately, I cannot change the MTU on the wireless adapter. Checked my wired speed on an XP PC using MTU set to 1500 and 1492 on the NAS. I saw no difference in speed in transferring a 105MByte file. A big THANK YOU.
- cfishAspirantI have been experiencing this same problem: good speed on wired connections with Vista but almost unusable on wireless connections with Vista.
I have now changed the MTU on my ReadyNAS NV+ to 1492. This has the following result: Wireless access is now fine but wired access speed is halved. A 138MB file took 6sec to transfer at MTU 1500 and 12sec at MTU 1492.
My feeling is that this is a compromise rather than a solution but at least I can now access files on the NAS with my wireless laptop.
Would wired speed be improved if I were to change the MTU on my wired workstation to 1492 to match the NAS? - JellenAspirant

In my testing my readynas Duo only gets full performance when mtu is set at 1500, changing it to something else decreseas performance, and I can't test jumboframes either (switch not compatible).
I'm pretty sure this is a Readynas issue, other NAS from different brands perform 100% on xp and vista wired or wireless! Hope they find a solution soon.
Kind regards - yoh-dahGuideTry lowering MTU only on the client that you access over wireless. This will force the ReadyNAS MTU down to 1492 only with the wireless client.

OK, I used this very useful tutorial http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/vistaMTU.htm to set the MTU on my Vista wireless laptop to 1492. I then set the NAS MTU back to 1500. Result: wired speed back to normal, wireless is now unusable again. So, setting the MTU on the wireless laptop to 1492 makes no difference. The only thing that seems to work is changing the MTU on the NAS thus halving the wired transfer rate. :(
