RBR750 Constantly Dropping Connection

RBR750 Constantly Dropping Connection

First, the model of my Orbi is a RBR750 (as it shows up in the interface). On Netgear's website where I purchased the system, it says RBK752 AX4200. There isn't an option for either of these on the dropdown menu.

 

Second, from about the second week of installing this (delivered on June 22nd), I have had nothing but problems with the Orbi maintaining a consistent internet connection. At first it was a few devices around my home would fall off and get reconnected withing a minute or so. The problem progressed to complete internet outage (Majenta LED color on the Orbi). I have been on and off the phone with support and they cannot get this thing to work. Does anyone have any known issues?

 

Current Firmware: V3.2.16.6

House: 3500sqft - Router and Sat are about 40ft apart

 

Support has had me mess with wireless settings. I have performed multiple factory resets. What do I possibly have to do to get this thing to work?

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?
Are wireless and wired devices not connecting when this happens? 

 

What channels are you using? Auto? Try setting manual channel 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz and any unused channel on 5Ghz.
Any Wifi Neighbors near by? If so, how many?

 

Try disabling the following and see:
Armor, IPv6 and Set 20/40Mhz Coexistence to 40Mhz only. Set Short preamble instead of Long preamble modes. Save settings and reboot the router and satellite(s).

 

Try CTS values are changed to 2347 under Advanced Tab/Advanced Settings/Wireless Settings

Thank you for the reply. The manufacturer of the modem from my ISP (Spectrum in Tampa, FL) is a 

 

There are no wired devices to the router.

 

Netgear support had me change the 5Ghz channel to 44. 2.4Ghz challen remains on auto.

There are no Wifi Neighbors near by. I live on a large property.

 

Armor and IPv6 are disabled. Short preamble is set for 5Ghz. CTS values are at 2347. Transmit power for 2.4Ghz is set to 50%. These are settings that Netgear support walked me through to change.

 

I was just on the phone with a support agent for about an hour and a half. We watched pings on my Macbook for about 40 minutes as it pinged google and then timed out numerous times, sometimes for 30-45sec at a time. As we monitored it, I booted up an old desktop so that I could have a wired ping going. We waited and waited and waited and the pings were stable. About 5 minutes after we stopped talking, both my wired and wireless computers timed out with google for about 30 seconds and then connection was restored. Any ideas?

What happens if you run that same ping test with a wired PC directly connected to your ISP modem?

I just conducted this test during my lunch break today. I had a 3 hour zoom meeting and lost connectivity multiple times. I use a macbook and kept the terminal up next to my call and internet browser and could see it timeout. 

 

During my lunch break, I plugged in my desktop directly into the modem. I am getting time outs. This is obviously an ISP issue then. With that said, I have never had issues with internet until I changed my router. I have had the same ISP for 4 years now and was using an Apple Time Capsule 3TB (very old). I realized i needed an upgrade when my Amazon Fire sticks wouldnt play Disney+ videoes for my kids. But i never had disconnection issues on my computers, phones, tablets, or other smart home devices around the property.

Possible problem introduced was coinsidental as well. Anything can happen with ISPs. 

Have the ISP check the signal and line quality UP to the modem. 
Be sure there are no coax cable line splitters in the between the modem and ISP service box. 
Be sure your using good quality RG6 coax cable up to the modem if this is a cable ISP service.

I'm experiencing the same issue as OP. I purchased this router and 2 sattelite package from Costco around September. This was replacing a 2x Ubiquiti Amplifi Alien router\mesh setup after it gave me trouble on 2.4GHz bands (worked flawlessly afor 5 months until August where the 2.4GHz radios just didn't work out of the blue).

 

Same firmware version as OP for the Orbi, I have been rebooting the\restarting the ONT (Verizon FiOS) along with the router at least once a week or once every 2 weeks. Even my wired devices loses connectivity. I'm suspecting it's the router or this batch isn't working well. Prior to this I never had issues with wired internet connectivity with past routers including the Amplifi Alien. Verizon Fios ONT rarely gets rebooted.

 

Working in IT I just want to come home and not think about troubleshooting things at home. From Ubiquiti UniFi with their firmwares constantly breaking things in the past, eero Mesh was ok but didn't provide the speeds I was looking for, then Alien Amplifi worked well minus the 2.4GHz band just stopped working randomly, now this Orbi with disconnection issues with a limited App UI functionality and the web UI looks and feels dated compared to eero or Amplifi.

 

I may need to go back to AmpliFi Alien and hope I get a good batch or start a new project at home to start pulling cable.

Sorry for the late reply.......When I first installed my RBR750 a few months ago it was totally unstable......Satellite disconnecting and reconnecting multiple times an hour taking all the wireless devices connected to it with it.  Sometimes they reconnected back to base router before satellite came back online.  Sometimes the router itself rebooted taking out all wired, 5GHZ and 2.4GHZ connected devices with it.  Lots of disconnects and reconnects of devices, etc.  

 

Worked with support multiple times.  Tried changing many of the settings discussed earlier in thread.....nothing.  Finally got the right Orbi specialist on with me (you have to ask to be escalated to Orbi specialists others on the frontline will try to be helpful but don't really understand Orbi).  He helped me figure out that although it wasn't apparent, the power supply (power cord itself) connected to my RBR750 was defective.  We swapped it for one of the satellite's power cords and other than one lingering issue the system is stable.....enough that no one in the house other than me watching the logs and my security cameras sees any issues.  

 

Satellite and router itself stay connected, no more spontaneous reboots at all.  Hope this helps someone.

 

The only issue I have remaining (and to be honest I just started chasing this one) is that my 2.4 GHZ only devices (predominantly security cameras + a couple of others) seem to disconnect and immediately reconnect multiple times per hour.....like every hour.  some connnected thru base some thru satellite.  Wired and 5GHZ all totally stable.  Only impacts 2.4GHZ and they all reconnect immediately after disconnect. More annoying than debilitating.   Have tried forcing each and all of the 2.4GHZ channels no luck, Tried reducing power for 5GHZ to 50% (Support suggestion)....made things worse.  Armour turned off.  

 

Anyone seen/solved  this before with 2.4GHZ?

Gad the problem was the adapter. Will keep that in mind. 

 

What is the distance between the router and satellite(s)? 30 feet or more is recommended in between RBR and RBS to begin with depending upon building materials when wirelessly connected.

Has anyone figured out this issue? I'm having the same problem on mine. a couple of things that I have noticed:

 

1) it was only wifi that was affected. I had 3 devices connected to my base on hard wire that were not affected. but everything talking to my base or satellite dropped connection. 

2) I've had this issue twice, and it was totally stable in between these 2 events 

- First event - the day after my Armor protection trial expired

- Second event - the day after my warranty expired!

 

Probably a coincidence, but the timing is really suspicious. Part of me is curious if netgear is doing something on their end when these events happen that could be causing issues (hopefully it would be unintended!). 

 

I have not changed out any of my wifi settings, because I didn't get a good explanation of what that might solve - especially when I have weeks of stability. Nothing that I'm aware of has changed in my environment.

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and Orbi system been performed since last update? IF this fails then your next step would be a factory reset and setup from scratch. Besure to not enable Armor.

I had issues with my cameras. My fix was:

For each camera, I setup IP Address Reservation, and went into camera settings and changed from DHCP to Static IP, specifying the reserved IP for each camera, subnet mask and DNS, as well as specified specific ports for each camera starting with 7900 and turned on UPnP. I then setup UPnP in the router for the TCP ports used. Problem never came back.

Another possible reason for for disconnects may be distance and interference.

I am very unhappy with this product. It's stability sucks. I had a google wifi which was not wifi 6 and it's a much better product. I really can't believe this router had such good reviews. First my guest network would have no internet connection. The wifi would connect and intermittently drop the actual internet connection constantly. Then I finally quit using the guest network which I had hoped to use as a secondary private network with less interference. Now the primary network does the same thing. I don't understand for the life of me why you can't control the radios independently either. I guarantee it's an issue with merging the 2.4 ghz and 5ghz radios. I am so disappointed that I threw the box away and then hesitated to return this piece of garbage. My wife's work laptop cannot see the network at all. No idea why. Seems to be an issue with enterprise windows and this router. My alienware now never connects directly to my network when I turn it on. It sucks and it's absolutely the router.

I'm having intermittent wifi connection drops and not finding any help online. Very disappointed with Netgear, specially this is so expensive product and there is no online kb content to support this problem. Or is this a known issue that is not documented anywhere?

OMG is the purpose of this device to cause pain? As I am writing this from my phone the WiFi from the new RBR750 i just purchased is dropping in and out. My wife who tried to work at home today wants to kill me. Is it to advanced for human kind to pull off? I like the fix suggestions. They gave me a real headache. Are you kidding me? How about I plug the thing in and turn it on, ok? That’s what I need. Something that just works. Wow. What a bummer.

Hi everyone, just wanted to update my status. I called my internet company (COX), to send someone to check my incoming connections and they found that they had a really bad splitter that was causing interruptions. They changed the splitter, and I do not have the issue anymore. Somehow this was not an issue withe earlier routers.

Glad it was the ISP thing. Be sure to save off a back up configuration to file for safe keeping. Saves time if a reset is needed.
