Nighthawk MR5200 (M5) - We need your feedback!
Good day Nighthawk Community,
I'm reaching out to you today in hopes of soliciting your help. If anyone is experiencing any issues with the Nighthawk MR5200 (M5) Mobile Hotspot we want to hear from you. We have had a very small handful of reports from around the globe of issues with the following:
- Issues connecting to the cellular 4G or 5G network
- Hotspot randomly rebooting
- Cellular/WiFi connection drops randomly
We are unable to replicate any of these issue but take this feedback very seriously. If you're experiencing any of these issues please feel free to post the details by replying to this topic and I'll ensure it gets passed along to our engineering team.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you!
Kind Regards,
Christine
Hi,
maybe it is possible to also help with the issue we experience.
We own two MR5200, let's call one "old" and the other one "new".
We use to run "old" with a Vodafone (Germany) SIM which originally came from a "Vodafone GigaCube", some kind of relabeled HUAWEI 5G Router. This setup was running fine for about 12 Month or so, but recently we started to experience interruptions of LTE connections after 12 to 24 hours. Only a reebot of "old" would help getting reconnected.
So we bought "new", used the very same SIM card with it. We experienced, that "new" wouldn't even connect to LTE nor any other band.
So we ordered a fresh SIM card and used in "new" but experienced the very same behaviour. "new" wouldn't connect to any band.
When using the fresh SIM card in "old", we were back to a connect time of about 12 to 24 hours, but then again interruptions of the connection.
JohnPengcould you take a look at the model.json stats if we upload them?
Many thanks in advance!

I'm Glad to see this post!!
I literally just bought one the other day and received it! then ended up having to buy an ID Mobile sim (18/month for unlimited data), I thought I could use wifi calling and put my phone's sim card in it, but it turns out you need your sim in your phone for it to "Authorise" the Wifi Calling 🙄
I was really happy that the sim activated fairly quickly! But... I took it home (was still working when I got home) After setting up the device for remote company working (SSID: TmacTrading Corporate (2.5 and 5G) wifi' networks) and a guest wifi network (TmacTrading Public) Also had to add the APN for iD Mobile:
name: iD
APN: idThen I backed up the settings as I am planning upgrading my Huawie 4G router with one of these MR5200's as well.
Then I set it up as my current 4G Wifi routers configuration Everything connected up great without having to re-enter wifi details. Then I backed that up too! so now I can quickly restore the settings to the new device when I have the funds to get the other one.
Then I decided to unplug my POE network switch from my Huawie device and the Xpol -01 external Antenna to the Ts9 ports with addaptors I got. Everything worked great (after rebooting the switch, raspberry pi and Yealink T58A IP phone to refresh IP Addresses)
The problem is after disconnecting the External Antenna!! it no longer connects to iD Mobile!! it doesn't even see the network! It sees the 3 Network but will not connect to it even though 3 is the Parent Network that iD Mobile runs off of!
If I connect the External Antenna back to the MR5200 it connects to the iD mobile network no issues!!
I then tried the 3 Sim without the external antenna! Same issue! it will not see the 3's network but lists iD Mobiles network instead!!
Then I though let me select the 3's Apns!
3internet
three.co.ukto no avail!
So my feedback is to allow us access to way more settings!! such as enabling or disabling the Internal / external antennas (something the Huawie B535 has)
Also it would be handy to have a DHCP Table! we have port forwarding... but it's useless without static routing or some form of ability to set reserved IP address for devices based on Mac Address. (I will need this for when I upgrade the B535, as I my laptop and the raspberry pi on reserved IP addresses for VNC viewer/server)Kind of pissed off that I rushed to get one and it lasted all but 5 hours and is now rendered useless as I now need possibly buy and cart round an external antenna!
Hoping it's not a hardware fault!- Interesting post. Mine is acting like the internal antennas are off too … the moment I plug in the 2x2 mimo it magically finds the network again.
Nice post!- TmacTradingLtdApprentice

After doing some extensive playing around in all the settings!!! I turned on my Huawie's internal antenna (to keep it connected to 3's network - it's normally set to exclusively use the external antenna). I then plugged in the external antenna to the Netgear Nighthawk M5 and got the network connection back! I then plugged in an ethernet connection to my laptop and connected to the web page 192.168.1.1 and set the timezone manually and also set it to all bands, since the 4G signal seems to be dropping a lot with the device!
Now it seems to be connecting to the network after rebooting without the need for the external antenna to get it on the network!
It makes sense! since when I was working at a company that provided IT service to the Met Police, If your computer's clock was not correct, it would refuse your connection to the network!
It now seems to be working! It does still sometimes take a wile to connect but it's working much more reliably with the timezone set manually!- Interesting about the time, but why would using an external antenna override the time issue,
I left mine off all night after connecting yesterday several times and it’s back to searching again.

Any Updates on this Please!! I'm getting really Fed up with this now!
2 days in a row with no service for 12 hours only works with an external antenna! was able to get on with external antenna but now it seems it doesn't hold the connection after unplugging the antenna 😞
Also yesterday, I was testing it out and about and My phone is on 3's network and I had 4G and 4G+ almost the entire day (Inverness to Ben Wyvis carpark) No signal till after the Aultguish Inn where I got H+ Until I hit the Braemore Junction where I got 4G+ and then got H+ after Ardmair (no signal on most networks from Drumrunie to Achiltibuie. Had 4G in Achiltibui on 3 on my phone which is only 4G capable.
On the Netgear device which is on ID Mobile (which are using 3's Infrastructure, Smarty also are on 3's infrastructure)
5G from Inverness to North Kessock. 4G to halfway to Tore. H from there Dingwall roundabout then lost connection all the way after the Aultguish Inn where I had H No signal till I hit Ullapool where I got 5G After Ardmair got H up to the Drumrunie Junction then lost signal then Nothing at all at Achiltibuie.
I got back to inverness and had all but an Hour of 4G when I got home then it dropped the connection and wouldn't find the network again until I plugged in the External Antenna about half an hour ago. I then unplugged it and the signal bar stayed on 4G with 2 bars so I connected my laptop's ethernet to the port Netgear page loads up, I opened a tab which failed to connect and sure enough network icon on the laptop showed no internet. rebooted the M5... No connection (searching)
At the moment its nothing more than a glorified Wifi (Wifi 6, with no internet)- JohnPengNETGEAR Expert

Thanks John. I have replied to your DM. I don't think the issue is with the external Antenna, however I recommend using this one or the upgraded version as a workaround to get it back on the network. Unfortunately the device is not holding the network connection after unplugging the external antenna. Also with this not being an isolated issue, I don't think it's a hardware issue. Something in the latest firmware has caused it to seek signals on the wrong network for the sim / apn... or is causing the device to think it's not permitted to connect to the network on the 3/4G networks...(not been able to fully test it on 5G as I can only get the 5G about 2 miles from where I live, however both times I've been in 5G areas it's worked fine).

Hi
I have issues choosing a WI-FI channel manually. My wi-fi net, where I live is, is wery busy. So in order to get at less busy frq, I manually try to choose from the options. But my MR5200 is ALWAYS randomly choose the frq for me. If I want ch40, I will NEWER get 40. But any other channel the device chooses for me.
I can be lucky, that after 5-10 reboots I finally get my prefered channel. I spoke to support. They know about this. But they are not able to fix this bug???
Kindest regards
Michael, Denmark

The Devices External Antenna Ports are Extreamly Weak! I have noticed that one doesn't work at all! Plugged in 1 connector at a time from external antenna into the right hand port and nothing! Plugged in 1 each to the left port it works but it's intermittent now and I have to keep holding it in place! Need to test this further but I'm thinking I made a massive mistake ordering this particular one from Amazon marked as Used and like new...
- TmacTradingLtdApprentice
and now after unplugging it, it's magically working without the external antenna
- The mr5200 is clearly a dumpster fire.
I’ve had a rma for 2 weeks and support can’t even get a simple cc charge correct to exchange it… and haven’t resolved it. - TmacTradingLtdApprentice
Seems to be working good for now on the internal antennae. Going to attempt to get as much of my Epic Games content downloaded in the next 10 hours before I have to leave for my delivery run later.

Ok I just rebooted my router a few times without the external antenna...
1st time it rebooted and searched then connected to 4G fine!
2nd time it rebooted and came back on searched said connected then went back to Searching. Weird thing is though, Laptop was still connected, and one drive was uploading files!
Connected my phone to its Wi-Fi and although the device is saying searching.... the data is working. There is also no yellow and black Exclamation sign on the screen saver screen saying data is turned off! This suggests that the issues with the latest firmware are:
Random Dropouts on the mobile network
Not Searching and / or connecting to the network, without the aid of an external antenna
Searching and finding the network but then falsely showing Searching while the data connection is fine:so, is the device doing speed tests of its own and refusing to connect to networks below a certain speed?

Posted my experience here, not being able to connect to 5G:
The other issue I'm having is occasional problems with disconnections with the mobile on LTE, even with the device saying its connected to 5G but LTE in the band info.

Hello team.
Workaround
Connect random TS-9 port to MR5200 even the TS-9 connectors has no actual antenna attached to it. After a TS-9 connectors connected one of the TS-9 port at back of MR5200. Broadband seems functioning again.
What happens
It happens w/w o A battery, A Ethernet connection nor any inform of change factors in physically.
It happens w/w o A wan connection been established nor any inform of change factors in software.
It happens w/w o A firmware downgraded or upgraded thereafter.
Continuing in searching states that non-changeable no matter which SIM card issued by or with. IoT card included.
What expected
After a swapped SIM card, A connection should've established in orderly.
What unexpected
It will never establish any connection with cellular if user don't introduce any TS-9 external connector to it.
How many carrier you switched and tested so far?
9
How many reset had performed so far?
uncounted
Have you tried to reach any help at all?
Yea. like for 9 months now, I think I've done pretty good job on searching unsolved and related like consumer support. Since this unit has special in facts I'd never want to replacement or tread in any kind.
Firmware that occurred issues with.

Hello,
Thank you for this post. I have suggestions after security issues.
MR5200 SMS functionalities :
1) Add the possibility of blocking certain numbers from which you do not wish to receive text messages.2) Add ability to disable sms functionality on router
Access control : Add MAC access control directly from the router interface
In my opinion it's could be very usefull.

Thierry

Hi
I come back to you for the MR5200 in N78 5G SA.
We have tested it and now it's ok : registration OK, PDU session OK. An equipment connected in wifi has traffic OK.But we notice after few seconds that MR5200 equipment send a PDU session release request to the core. I have a wireshark capture if you are interesed. We could sent you by mail.
Could you explain me why the MR5200 send a PDU session release request ?Are there any news about the roadmap of native support of 5G SA on MR5200 and corresponding supported bands ?
Best regards,
François Le Gall

Do you have a way to capture QXDM logs for the disconnection issue?

I would like to ask Netgear experts how long it will take for this SA. I bought a 5G device, but I can't connect to 5G. The MR6500 has come out, and an MR5200 device is not supported by 5GSA.
MR5200-100EUS
What are you doing every day? Such an important 5GSA function has not been fixed until now, I swear I will never buy any products from Netgear again

Just received MR5200 m5 after 3 weeks of waiting from amazon (at first they set the price of 500 euros, then canceled the order and had to order again). And it just freezes and reloads every 30 seconds. Do they test their "premium" routers at all?
What could be the solutions to this problem? How can I upload new firmware from a computer? Resetting to factory settings, working with and without a battery, mechanical reboot, USB connection, had no effect.
For some reason, I was sure that something would be wrong with the device, because even netgear's pre-sales support was terrible.- Xop0Star
Lol, there is no firmware updates in https://www.netgear.com/support/download/?model=MR5200
