Cannot access GS110TPP after reset

I purchased a used GS110TPP which I need for its PoE features and performed a factory reset by pressing the reset button on the front panel for more than 5 seconds. I expected to be able to access the switch on http://192.168.0.239 or at least to be able to ping it. However, I was not even assigned a DHCP address, so my computer got a 169.254.x.x self assigned address.

I then set my own address manually to 192.168.0.240 (netmask 255.255.255.0, according to the manual), but still cannot access the switch.

Is there anything else I can do?

I performed multiple resets with different times of pressing the button (below 2 seconds, below 5, over 5, over 10, over 20).

Kind regards

Johannes

I did try the Netgear Discovery Tool, but it didn't find any device either, and it also showed the 169.254.x.x address on my NIC.

The 169 address on your NIC is expected, since the switch doesn't have an dhcp server in it.

Did you try connecting the switch to your router?  Then check the attached device list in the router config.

I believe the discovery method uses ethernet broadcast, so you might also need to disable any firewall/internet security software running on the PC.

    That helped! Thanks!

I attached the switch to my local router and then I found its IP address and could log in.

I had assumed that I could connect to the switch without another router.

In the Hardware Installation Guide it says on page 40:

By default, the DHCP client of the switch is enabled. If the switch cannot get an IP address from a DHCP server, the switch’s default IP address is 192.168.0.239 and the default subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

Maybe that is an issue with the older firmware running on the switch. It was running 7.0.9.12 and I will update it to 7.1.0.7 now.

    Thanks for your helpful support!

  • Hi Stephen,

    thanks for the fast answer!

The hardware factory reset is described on page 21 of the hardware manual:

Are you seeing the power LED turn yellow turing the reset process?

For some reason I missed this page 21. Thanks. It says:

    • 0-5 seconds: power cycle (reboot)
    • 5-10 seconds: factory reset, but keep registration
    • 10+ seconds: factory reset and loose registration

I tried all three variants. The power button did light yellow(-ish).
But still the same behavior after each reboot/reset (169.254.x.x address).

    Thanks anyways!

To be correct, it's an IPv4 broadcast, requiring the computer and the switch -must- be in the same IPv4 subnet.

This is different from the legacy ProSAFE Plus Utility, making use of an Ethernet L2 Broadcast using the legacy Netgear Switch Discovery Protocol (NSDP).

Worth noting, the Netgear Insight App does still contain the NSDP code, and continues to be able discovering many Netgear Plus switches (but without any other App functionality, it just allows to see the switch IP and call the mobile Web browser - what if course requires the mobile and the switch to be in the same IPv4 subnet again.
