NV+ Power Supply Failure
Apparent power supply failure in my Readynas NV+. System appears to power up then becomes unresponsive even to power button on front of machine. Smell coming from machine. Part#/Model#: RNV2-S4-R450. Serial No. (MAC) shows: 000DA2014E4. Phoned Tech and they said that this serial number is in a lot of known bad power supplies.
Questions:
-Is a power supply replacement available?
-If I cannot get a power supply, can I buy another NV+ and install my drives to recover the files?
-Is there any risk in loosing data if I pull my disks and put them in another NV+?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee Retired1. What region are you in e.g. US? I know they have been providing free replacement PSUs in some regions e.g. the US. Alternatively you could purchase the RND4PSU1 if it's still available
2. Yes: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another
3. Provided all disks are fine, it should work fine. The new NAS should not be running firmware any older than what was on the old NAS. Before doing the migration, I would choose a spare disk (not from your array), put it in the new NV+ and upgrade the firmware on the new NV+ to 4.1.7 (if it doesn't come with it). - PapaBear1ApprenticeCurrently the Netgear Store is showing the NV+ PSU as "out of stock" and the Amazon link just takes you to a listing of NV+ units.
When in stock at the Netgear Store, it lists for $120. A new NV+ at Amazon is $315 and at Newegg it is $320 (free shipping at both locations). Contacting Technical Support should get you a replacement PSU if you are in the USA and your serial number falls in the range of the NV Rev B and early NV+ when they first went with the fanless PSU. Here is the link to the service action. Although 4 years old, it was still being honored just a while back. You may have to have the tech escalate the case to the next level. Just be persistent.
Here is a link to the actual changing procedure, with photos. Since mine is long past the expiration of the warranty, I periodically remove mine to clear out all the dust that accumulates. I noticed the last time some of my capacitors are now bulging, so mine may have to be replaced before much longer. Mine is also within the service action window. - flashmastaAspirantMy PSU just died yesterday and I tried calling Netgear about a possible replacement or even a discount since my unit falls into the range of affected units in the service action. They told me it was out of warranty and all they could do was offer $75/hr phone support or a $299 3-year extended warranty. Neither are a good deal when the PSU is 'only' $120...I was hoping that they would cut me a break since it was a unit with this known issue, but they didn't seem to care.
- PapaBear1ApprenticeDon't call Netgear. Open an on line case and when you get your case number, open a new discussion and put the case number in the header.
Unless Netgear has changed the policy, they are replacing these known bad PSU's that fall in the range. However, not all do fail.
When you make the online tech question refer to the fact that unless Netgear has recently changed their policy, they are still replacing these in the North American markets. At one time they were replacing just the PSU, but recently they seem to be RMA'ing the entire box. - PlargAspirantGood info Papa Bear. I ended up pestering the system on the phone long enough that they sent me a PSU replacement (charged me about $27). The only way they would entertain any concept of support was for me to dig up proof-of-purchase since I was not registered to the serial number. Swapping the PSU was a snap. My NV+ is now working--albeit now with a recent disk failure.
- zappoAspirantI have three of five units with failed PSU's do you know if these are part of a recall - is there a procedure to get them done free?
- PapaBear1ApprenticeOpen an on line case giving all the details. I would only do one at a time, however.
- guyjrAspirantI just had the PSU on my NV+ burn out on me a couple nights ago - smelled the familiar smell of electronics burning when I walked into the room, and discovered the unit was already powered off (thankfully a real fire didn't break out). Netgear support hooked me up with a replacement PSU free of charge, even though I bought my NV+ back in Jan 2007! (tho I did opt for the $25 next business day advance replacement option - downtime needs to be kept to a minimum!)
- PapaBear1ApprenticeApparently some times they send out a new PSU, in which case you have to change it out - not a big deal, and sometimes they RMA the chassis and replace the whole chassis.
- PlargAspirantThere is apparently a list of power supply serial numbers that were recalled a few years ago. Mine was verified on that list, but there was hesitation to replace since the purchase was some 6-years earlier. In the end the support worked out.
