NV+ v2 Loud Fan after Firmware Upgrade
After upgrading the firmware to 5.3.6, the fan in my unit randomly decides to go full blast.
The disks and the unit always sit at around 40 deg c, but the unit decides that it is hot and blasts the fan at 3400 RPM. After about 15 minutes it decides its not hot anymore and goes back to a normal 1000 RPM (or so).
It never did this before the firmware upgrade. I would understand if it was doing this under any sort of load, but it does it even if the disks are spun down. The difference in temperature before and after it runs is literally 2 degrees (maybe 41 down to 39 on the hard disks and system).
Any suggestions to resolve this? Should I just put a quieter fan in?
Thanks

- BanzAspirantThanks for clarifying that.
WRT to the downgrade, do you know if I need to backup my settings before doing an downgrade to 5.3.5? Is it also as simple as just downloading the older firmware and uploading it via the web portal? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou can just download the older firmware and install it via the Dashboard.
- ablambooAspirantFYI - I just went back to 5.3.5 (from 5.3.6) and the fan noise persists. Groan. I may go for a fan swap (I've heard of users going to Fractal Designs or Gelid Solutions fans) and bite the bullet with the warranty. It's just too loud, I can hear it from the next room. How did this get past QC?
Nov 2 update: I replaced the stock Magic fan with a Gelid Silent 6 92 mm fan and the fan noise is gone. It's a pretty easy swap, just two screws on each side to pull off the sides and four more to pull off the fan and bracket on the back. The Gelid comes with 4 rubber grommets which you can use instead of screws to hold the fan to the bracket. No noise, no vibration. It was $6 (retail) to buy the fan online, how much is NetGear saving by selling the chassis with that crap noisy fan? - GreyBikeAspirantJust purchased my unit, it has 5.3.7 of the firmware installed and I am also getting the loud fan spin up problem. Any further update from anyone else on this issue, other than changing out the fan?

Gelid Silent 9 - aksVirtuosoI have just purchased an NV+ v2 and two WD 1TB Red. I upgraded the unit to 5.3.7 (it came with 5.3.5).
The WD Red disks are almost silent. Initial sync took ~5 hours.
However, the fan is whining away with a low level noise that is just annoying. It is fairly quiet, but in a quiet room, I can hear it over my PC. I changed the stock fan on my Duo (v1) to a Fractal Design 60mm Silent Series for the same reason. The fan on my NV+ v2 is reported as spinning at 1365rpm and each disk temperature is 26 degrees C (it's not under any stress yet).
Is 1365rpm the lowest / normal?
Is there a fan control utility for the NV+ v2? - a_burger_with_fAspirantHave you tried to do an OS reinstall after updating?
do you get any temp errors or are the logs showing anything about the temp

Have you tried to do an OS reinstall after updating?
Not sure I know how to do that. I ran the check for new version updater in FrontView. How do I "reinstall the OS" after that? (I admit, I've not searched yet)do you get any temp errors or are the logs showing anything about the temp
I need to check when I get back to the box tonight. - aksVirtuosoI downloaded the logs and found a file "fan_setting_min" which has one line with "165" in it. I had the unit off over night, so it was showing 19dC, and fan was at 1365rpm. This seems quite fast for such a low temp?
- aksVirtuosoThe log does not show anything odd that I can see. After working the system quite hard, the disk temps are at 29/30dC, and fan is still 1365 rpm.
What is "normal" for the fan speed? Can the fan ever be shut off completely (at a low temp)?
