Replacement for NV

I had my NV stored for a year, and when I hooked it up today, there was no response. I put a tester on the power supply and it appears to have failed while in storage.

Rather than replace the power supply I would like to just get a new ReadyNAS. The NV is equipped with four WD5002ABYS drives. Is there a newer ReadyNAS I can migrate these drives to, and have it work correctly?

Thanks
Frank

If you mean "preserving the data", then no. None of the currently shipping NAS are compatible.

You can mount them in a x86 linux system. If you have an ATX power supply handy (and are willing to make a custom cable) you can rig something that will work at least long enough to get the data off.
  • "You can mount them in a x86 linux system"... Does this mean if I boot my XP machine into Linux I will be able to read the data if I connect the drive through USB?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Well, I think on my best day I could never figure that out - much too arcane for my pea brain. Aside from all the words I don't understand, figuring out how to connect them all together, get power to them all and then which one would be the one to connect to USB......
Do you have a link to how I might configure an ATX power supply custom cable, Stephen? Maybe I could just cut the ends off the existing cable on the failed power supply and splice/insert into the ATX long enough to remove the data.

    Thanks again for your time.

  • This is doable, I think - thanks for the help - I am very grateful -

    Cheers!

  • Another question please - I have 2 x NV+ machines as well - could I use the power supply from one of those to fire up the NV and remove the data - doesn't seem like a big deal to remove the PS and put it back. I only need it working for an hour.

    Thank You

If the firmware on the 2 other machines matches the failed one, then you have an even simpler option.

Just power down one of the working machines. Remove the drives, label them by slot. Then put the drives from the failed machine into the working one (preserving slot order) and power it up!.

If the firmware doesn't match, then the NAS will attempt to upgrade/downgrade the OS partition to match what's in its flash. Usually that is not a problem, but if the firmware is seriously mismatched it is a bad idea.
  • TaDa! There's the answer - they all have the same firmware - I'll let you know how it goes -
  • Worked like a charm! All data recovered, no funds spent, NV and dead PS trashed - now in the market for another NV+ that will work with existing HDs. Thank you for your help, Stephen - you've been very kind and helpful. Someday I will pay it forward -
