Firmware upgrade fail #19255699
Had a fail when I attempted to update firmware from 4.1.8 to 4.1.9 as follows:
Issue with Firmware update for:
ReadyNAS Duo serial # 24M3037701D1A
This chassis was replaced on March 21, 2012 under warranty on RMA # 1086906
Problem:
NAS was running fine and I rec’d an email that there was a firmware update available to 4.1.9 I then downloaded the update to a folder on one of my networked computers. On the NAS dashboard I went to the update tab and browsed to the downloaded 4.1.9 file. And clicked update. I rec’d a message that I needed to reboot the NAS to complete the update.
After the reboot I rec’d an email that said:
“Firmware update failed verifying flash.”
The NAS was NOT accessible over the net. I forced a shutdown by holding down the power button, and then did a reboot. On reboot the blue power button does a slow blink On-Off, and the both drive lights blink On-Off. I then did a forced shutdown again.
What next.

- RabbieAspirantreplied in case#19255699.
- RNASguyLuminarySorry, but when I access my case file #19255699 I only see my original post and not your reply.
- OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertIt looks like they are wanting you to boot the unit into tech support mode.
Once you have the unit into tech support mode, please up the date the case with the 5 digit number that it shows in Telnet mode. - RNASguyLuminary

OK, but why don't I see that in the case file. I can open an old case file and see all comms back and forth , but for this one I only see my OP, and a new post I just did saying I don't see
any reply from support.
Where are you seeing what you report above??
bc
PS: Also, I just tried booting it again and there is a slight change. The power light is now steady, and the two drive lights blink slow (together) On-Off. AND, how does one telnet to a device that is not ping-able on my network, and is not seen by RAIDar. - OOM-9NETGEAR ExpertRNASguy,
I have worked with support to checked on the status. It looks like based on the errors that you are getting, we are going going to need the unit in tech support mode.
The “Firmware update failed verifying flash.” error that you are getting is a sign of the internal flash did not get imaged correctly. This might be caused by the hardware or software, and we will need to investigate why that message came up.
The tech support mode, or telnet mode is a low level diagnostic option to allow our support/engineers to investigate what is happening when the unit is not able to boot up all the way.
You were mentioning it is behaving differently. Are you able to access the nas? If you are not able to access the NAS, the tech support mode will load another OS that may have different results to your network/RAIDar.

No I have no access... no ping, no RAIDar, not seen on my net.
OK so if I use the boot options do I go to TFTP at the 10 sec mark or do I go to Tech Support Mode at the 15 sec mark. AND, once I place the box in that state, then what??
AND, why is none of this in my case file?
Thanks for being the intermediary between me and tech support. ALSO, will any of these actions touch my data, I do not want that lost. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWhen did you purchase the Duo?
Try to get it into tech support mode. It should show in RAIDar when in this mode and will dynamically receive an I.P. address from your router. Forward port 23 to the NAS and put your WAN (internet) I.P. address in your case.
If it doesn't boot into tech support mode, try powering down, removing the disks and attempting to boot into tech support mode without disks installed.
Do not use TFTP boot recovery as this is very unreliable. If anything do a USB Boot Recovery, but this should only be attempted if booting into tech support mode doesn't work. - RNASguyLuminary

OK, I will try to place the box in tech support mode and see if RAIDar finds it. There is a reserved IP on my router for the box's MAC. If all this works I will make note here and post details in the case.

I was meaning when did you purchase the Duo that was replaced under warranty? - RNASguyLuminaryOK, did a start up into tech support mode (LED flash #3 at the 15 sec mark). The box settled into a blue power button bright-dim-bright-dim. After 5 ins of this I tried RAIDar and it did not see the box (BTW, RAIDar was working fine as it sees my other NAS boxes).
So, step two: I tried to power down with the hold blue power button, but it would not shut down. So I pulled the power plug. I next pulled the two drives and attempted to enter tech support mode again.
Did a start up and waited for it to settle. This time the blue power light did multiple blinks and eventually settled into the same bright-dim-bright-dim sequence. RAIDar does not see it, and it is not ping-able at its reserved IP. However, when I check the router for what's on the LAN, I saw a device at a new address I'd not seen before. It is ping-able. If I pull the network cable from the NAS that address is no longer ping-able. So I take this address to be the NAS box. However, it is not seen by RAIDar.
Stand by for step three as I port forward.
